I liked it because I honestly couldn't predict what was going to happen at all and that in itself was pretty entertaining. Plus I'll watch anything with Oscar Isaac in it.

Maybe? It starts out pretty promising but it's kind of a slog. It's the kind of movie that confuses drama with endless bickering and most of the obstacles the characters face come from their own idiotic and out of character decisions.

The raid on the mansion and watching Ben Affleck become unhinged with greed were pretty good.

Isn't this kind of the point of the movie though?

I been wantin to see a honkey dance.
Was it? It feels like lazy writing when conflict arises because some highly trained, highly capable guys make bone-headed decisions and start coming apart at the seams almost immediately. Especially considering they pull of the heist without breaking a sweat and things are humming along according to plan and then they just knowingly overload their helicopter and drive it into the side of a mountain while they're still deep in enemy territory. Maybe I could forgive that stuff if the movie was working better for me, but I have a very low tolerance for cinematic bickering.

Maybe that is making some kind of point about something but I don't really care, an interesting story is more important to me personally.

Edit: I will say that another thing I liked about the movie is that there was waaaay less macho posturing in the "meet the guys" section than these types of movies usually indulge in.

It's odd too because the characters are seemingly being punished for their actions, but the actions being punished aren't "Deciding to rob and murder a drug lord" so much as "Well, you took like 20% too much money". Like if they had still been murdering thieves, but had taken like $200m instead of $250m they would be fine, which is an odd message.

And for me the entire movie existed in a quantum state of being both an indictment of these tough dudes and a celebration of how bad-rear end they were and never collapsing into a single answer. This isn't a case of interesting ambiguity either, but just a movie that couldn't make up it's mind. I'm still baffled by the ending where they have nobly left the money behind and given their shares to Afflecks family, only for Hunman to give Isaac the coordinates of the money, so he can get it when the snow thaws. I have no idea what that is saying.

Patriot is great overall, but the first few episodes are pretty boring. I stopped watching for a while after episode 2 or 3 because I just didn’t care. But I went back to it eventually and then it really started getting good.

I found myself examining what my own decision calculus would be in that situation and I think I get what the writer was going for. Up until a certain point in the film, leaving money behind was seen by some of the characters as giving away something they possessed. It's definitely a mindset that I could see controlling someone's decision making process, especially in the moment. Sure the difference between 40 and 50 million each doesn't sound like a lot but if you're thinking of it the other way, i.e. "why the gently caress would anyone just leave 10 mill sitting here?!" it makes more sense.

I also found the ambiguity to be interesting. Even within the group there was a large continuum concerning whether or not what they were doing was right, and whether or not the plan should have been abandoned when people started getting killed. For me, that's what I took away from the end: Charlie's character didn't want the money. He didn't want that on his conscience, but he knew Oscar's character well enough to know it wouldn't bother him. That's the message of the film for me. These guys were brothers in arms but once that brotherhood was really tested outside the RoE, they weren't similar people at all.

You've made some good points here. I didn't hate the movie, just thought it wasn't all it could be. Maybe the problem is with me and my expectations. I thought the extra time they took in the house would be the problem, but they deal with that pretty easily, only to struggle with the physical weight.

I did like the scene where they just massacre all the dudes coming back from church. It was actually unsettling how easily they ruined those dudes. Kind of like a less good version of the scene at the border crossing in Sicario. The overwhelming strength of the "heroes" becomes disturbing.

Good to know. I bailed halfway through Ep 3 but keep seeing everyone in here real into it. I'll give it another go.

Just finishing up "The Highwaymen" on Netflix right now, it's been a real treat. Good flick on Bonnie and Clyde, been enjoying the cars, set and costume work in addition to the rest of the quality.

You are going to loving love season 2 of Vice Principals. I don't have HBO so I went out of my way to get the DVDs from the library as soon as they were available.

I watched season 1 the same way, and they left a working VUDU code in the case! Didn't get so lucky for season 2.

There's 2 shows on Netflix right now that are absolute must-watches. Gourmet Samurai and Midnight Diner. Japanese food porn that warms your heart and is funny as gently caress. I'll start with Midnight Diner:

Midnight Diner is about a late night hole in the wall in Tokyo that is open from midnight to 7AM every night. Every episode is focused around a single item on the menu, but he promises to make anything a customer requests...as long as he has the ingredients. It's incredibly slice-of-life and down to earth about everyday people and their struggles, and it's a new restaurant patron every episode. It's incredibly heartwarming and has a unique charm I can only really compare to the side-stories of the Yakuza franchise. Also the food is fuckin' beautiful, and you can get an entire recipe list here: https://www.justonecookbook.com/netflix-midnight-diner-tokyo-stories-season-1-recipes/ but be warned, this article could be considered spoilers, so I'd save it until after you finish the season.

Samurai Gourmet is about a 60 year old retiree who... imagines? Hallucinates? Partners? with an Edo period nameless samurai. The first episode is pretty amazing on it's own, maybe you've seen it going around a while back - he learns to enjoy afternoon beer in public like a fuckin' daydrunk after witnessing a ronin fight off professional samurai shaming him for daydrinking sake. The fuckin' money shots on the beer is just incredible.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qQ0-m9LLxM

He gets into all sorts of everyday shenanigans and his character is incredibly sweet and endearing. They play with the whole samurai gimmick in some incredibly fun ways, and the comedic timing and deliver is just fantastic.

Also I've been burning through Gotham which is basically grimdark Adam West schlock and it somehow works as much as it shouldn't
