I'll be honest, I picked this article just because the headline was great and made me smile. It's a real confluence of related but different topics popular with goons. I fondly remember the old seasteading fiction thread and am glad this movement is finally getting the attention it deserves. Bitcoin couple may face death penalty in Thailand over 'seasteading' effort https://www.foxnews.com/world/bitcoin-thailand-seasteading-american-couple-death-threat quote:A dream to live at sea has left an American Bitcoin investor and his Thai partner in hot water with officials in Thailand, and the two may face life in prison or death over violating the country’s sovereignty.

Yeah at this point I think it's safe to assume that anyone involved in bitcoin or Libertarianism is just a child rapist. And I don't care about the "right way" to pronounce Phuket, I am willing to bet that when HE talked about his dream of a child sex dungeon for sex tourists in international waters, HE referred to it as "gently caress-it." 'Cuz all this wanting to get away from government bullshit is just about wanting to rape children without "The Man" coming down on you and throwing you in jail.

If you need to conduct research in a place created expressly to be free of laws you probably shouldn't be allowed to do it. That said he does kind of a point that death is a pretty harsh punishment for squatting, just park a destroyer there and evict them.

Thailand isn't obligated by it's criminal code to kill them, it's just possible for anyone convicted of that crime to get it. Though with Thai courts under a military junta who knows!

So why would Thailand be able to charge them with article 119 if they are just outside of Thai waters? Thailand can't but the entity known as THAILAND sought joinder and flew a striped flag at half mast during a strong gale and therefore isn't subject to your "rules"

They're still in the exclusive economic zone which extends 200nmi. I don't really understand the laws but it sounds like Thailand owns everything under water out there and can use it for resources like wind farms, fishing, oil exploration and poo poo like that. They might have been able to get away with just chilling out there on a boat, but putting a permanent structure in a sovereign countries EEZ sounds like a pretty bad idea.

Nothing stops them because there isn't a universal immutable law that governs the Universe. A collection of other people would need to form a government and bring protest to the Thai government (like the actual country he held citizenship in before rejecting the system). The delicious bottom line of all of this is the complete rejection of the cooperative nature of modern living that he took completely for granted coming back to bite him.

Additionally even if they setup in the middle of the ocean the Thai government, or any other government, could just swing by and oppress them with virtual impunity. It's the reason why governments exist. It's just another long sigh as they recreate the tragedy of history while being arrogant enough to never learn from it. You know, libertarians.

China could build an island 35 feet off Thailand's coast and they won't be able to do poo poo. With the exception of Korea, Taiwan, and Japan, there isn't a nation around that area that can even begin to posture militarily to keep China from taking what they want. Also, given that China doesn't recognize any nations sovereignty of their sea borders, they can always spin it as self-defense. . . because they are defending their waters.
