A silly little mouse!

The difference is that in what you posted it's the culmination of a series of twists and betrayals and Sith scheming. Not to mention it was set up like 50 issues earlier. Part of her running motivation was she knew that she knew too much to be allowed to live. Plus the tone is really important here. With Aphra we're supposed to think "Wow, Vader sure is an rear end in a top hat, poor Aphra." The other story is all "Look how Vader's so badass to this loser."

Like, it's directly aping Phantom of the Opera and Disney Princess stuff. It's not even remotely subtle.

And honestly, the story where she uses Vader as source of inspiration and starts acting like that Sith Lord she imagines herself to be is so much more interesting and disturbing than sudden murder. As is, the story is just cheap and nasty.

As for the art looking ugly, I can't help but think that was somewhat on purpose, as the splash panels that show her imagined romantic scenarios look really gorgeous in comparison.

I get that the story was probably meant to be tragic, and that by it's very nature it could never have had a happy ending. And even though the story may not have been intended that way, it doesn't change the fact that it ultimately comes off as mean-spirited and, most of all, mysogynistic.

In the hands of another writer, the plot might have been salvageable. Dial up the creepy-stalkery obsessiveness in the nurse (such as her collecting Vader's surgery remains) and have her become less sympathetic and even slightly scary to the reader may have helped evade the "she's killed for being a woman" vibe. Having her boss being a woman may have helped too, seeing as how the nurse is literally the only woman in the story, and thus is in danger of being read as exemplary for women in general. Having Vader choke or otherwise kill her while in her mind her romance novel finds its (literal?) climax may have been a very dark way to go, but that probably wouldn't fly in a Disney-owned comic book. Hell, even playing the story out as it is and just letting Vader leave the chamber silently, lost in thoughts, might have implied that she is right about his loneliness and he killed her because he couldn't have anyone know his weakness. It's really mostly Vader's final line about the "garbage" that kills the whole thing.

Edit: OK, this worried me. After page after page of glowing reviews (written, it's worth noting, exclusively by men), I'm glad I found some dissenting voices:

I didn't get the impression from the OT that Vader was supposed to be a casual murderer or someone who kills people without a purpose. He kills people in combat or combat related situations and chokes his subordinates as a punishment. That's quite different than what's shown in the comic. Not that one is necessarily better than the other but the comic is inconsistent with his characterization in the movies.

In the prequels Anakin murders people when he's angry. The ROTS murder spree was not something he really wanted to do but had to do in order to get enough dark side points to unlock force resurrection. Or at least that's the way I understood it.

In addition to everything else, the comic is entirely without surprises. The nurse is from the start portrayed as hopelessly delusional, and the "twist" is about Vader's most obvious and shallowest trait. It's like people gushing that the final scene of Rogue One "made Vader scary again". You're telling me Vader is a scary bad guy who kills wantonly and effortlessly? Oh wow, I would never have guessed.

There's two better ways you could have gone with that basic concept. You could establish the woman as an independent character and have some fun with your "Space Harley Quinn" concept, playing the character for laughs without making her basic dignity the butt of the joke. Or you could do the story sincerely and get the audience to root for the character, even though they know that it can't possibly happen without jeopardizing the movies' canon.

I didn't read the story and from what has been posted I don't feel any inclination to do so. It doesn't feel like it adds anything to the Starwars Galaxy/Darth Vader/Empire.

But I do wonder, what would have happened if she was a guy with the exact same story?
I think that the LGBT community would get up in arms about that.

https://makingstarwars.net/2019/04/huge-rumor-about-how-the-final-duel-in-star-wars-the-rise-of-skywalker-plays-out/

quote:

The rumor is that Matt Smith isn’t Palpatine reborn or rejuvenated but a dark side acolyte.

However, during The Rise of Skywalker, Smith’s character is willfully possessed by the spirit of Emperor Palpatine.

During the final act of the film Rey and Kylo team up to fight the Palpatine possessed Matt Smith.

The two-on-one duel is pretty intense for the duo.

Eventually Kylo Ren kills Palpatine’s host body

Palpatine’s spirit then jumps into Kylo Ren’s body.

Kylo Ren is strong enough to not lose total control of his mental faculties.

Kylo Ren struggles to take control of his body but subdues himself and his weapon while beckoning Rey to kill him.

Kylo does the right thing and becomes Ben Solo again as he sacrifices himself to kill Palpatine.

Rey having never toyed with the dark side like Kylo Ren and the acolyte did means Palpatine has body evil enough to inhabit.
