I had a dream about Monty last night. Not a good dream. It made me realize his mortality and I’ve been depressed all morning because of it.

We made dogs really good but we gave them too short of a life.

Ba-dam ba-DUMMMMMM

It’s the saddest thing that our good boys and girls don’t get to spend the rest of our lives with us. All we can do is be as good to them as we can and give them the best lives possible so when they head to the Rainbow Bridge, we can let them go with a natural sense of loss, but not regret of thinking “I wish I had done this with them while they were still here.”

When my old dog passed away, I was sad and missed him like crazy, but I took some comfort in knowing that I’d given him all of the love I could give and had no regrets about the life and adventures we shared. I too have thought about Lando’s mortality and I know I’m gonna be a loving wreck when he passes, but I’m resolved to leave nothing on the table with him as well.

I read something somewhere about a kid who described why dogs don’t live as long.

And he said it’s because it’s our job to learn how to love. It takes humans 70-80 years and a lot of times we still don’t figure it out. Dogs have it figured out from day 1, and that’s why they don’t stay on earth as long: because their job of learning how to love is done.

This.

Also if it is comforting at all i saw some tumblr or twitter thing that basically was acting as if human were like elves to dogs. Ultra long lived, we care for generations of their family and they love that we are there for them every minute of their lives. It was bullshit but i believe dammit.

Popping up from out of nowhere...

I wanna tell you how smart and thoughtful Zipper is.

At 5pm every day, Zipper waits at the doorjam of my office for me to close my laptop, thus signaling “Yabba Dabba Doo” with barks, play paws, spins and walking to the living room while looking behind her to make sure I follow.

Yesterday, I was able to determine the exact moment where she bolts for the door to wait. It is the right-click to shut down my work laptop. The clicks sound distinctly different on this wireless mouse, so when I do this at 5pm specifically, she gets into position.

Zipper has trained herself to help me celebrate coming home from work when I work from home. Okay I’m gonna cry now, Zipper’s so good.

So we have a stray cat that comes around each night to sleep in the house, get fed and get snuggles. She has been a bit wary about Henry arriving, so tonight as I fed her and Henry walked in I picked her up to make her feel safer.

Apparently the higher you go the safer you feel.
