Only handicap I’d have with video histories would be that I rarely keep multiple editions. Though, I did find that I can get three editions of Lawrence of Arabia on laserdisc (both Criterion editions and pre-restoration), a few vhs and Betamax versions, and all three dvd editions for about $50 shipped total from eBay. But I don’t have a laserdisc or vhs player anymore.

I mentioned it in an edit to my post, but Spectacle theater here in NYC does a thorough job in getting the rights to screen even the weirdest and most obscure films, often dogging tiny distribution companies across the world and getting the first ever legal exhibition rights for any given film. Everything they show is legal. Videology (now closed) just flagrantly did not bother, despite also showing the occasional (legal) current release. Film Noir is slightly more mainstream in its programming, and has releases like Her Smell and Climax on their calendar which they'd definitely have legal rights for, and I'd guess they've secured rights for their upcoming Troma film slate as well, but they also play the occasional mainstream release which I could see them just trying to fly under the radar about. But also looking at their upcoming slate it's a lot less mainstream than I've seen before, so I could see them having shifted their programming to fully legal exhibition. Then there's Sydicated which is showing Apollo 11 and The Fifth Element today but is a pretty legit seeming place so

Really the only reason I haven't unloaded most of my older editions are because I haven't really considered how yet.

Alright so a minicinema then is basically just like a regular cinema except maybe instead of even being as big as a one-screener it could be a hole-in-the-wall building with folding chairs and a roll-up projection screen. Would still be a cool thing to open, there are a few empty lots/buildings in my little town that'd make good indie movie houses. The problem would be an audience, like we've got a college town nearby but otherwise we're not very cultured around here. I'd probably get hounded with people asking why we don't show Marvel movies, "I thought this was a real movie theater!" etc.

I didn't really have the money to start collecting movies until Blu-ray was well established. So far the only thing I've double dipped on is Blade Runner where I went from the multi version DVD set to the 4K collector's edition. I'll probably get the Ghostbusters I & II set when it comes out next month. Did they ever fix that Creature From the Black Lagoon set? If you start a microcinema you should really just call it Vidiots. But if you're doing a shadier microcinema, you don't really have to worry much about audience—it's cooler if you're the only one in the theater, anyway. Just show some weirdo movies and advertise it at the library and a nice group of buffs will find it. I'm sure there are tons of illegal microcinemas all over the country, though. I know NYC has a few, but most are so niche and underground that even I don't know about them. I know somewhere in the city does regular kung-fu movies (though Spectacle has a surprise Sunday matinee kung-fu, too) but I'm not legit enough to know where.

Yea that's what happened with me, I was either a student and/or not able to find full-time work from like 2004-2010 so I really wasn't collecting anything during that time. I owned a few movies, like Alien, Ghostbusters, Blade Runner, Die Hard, and those ended up being my only triple-dips because I've owned(or will, in the case of Ghostbusters) them in all three formats(DVD, Blu, UHD). UHD has been nice for me because there's been plenty of releases that I had never owned in any format before, so I had no hesitation in buying those. They occasionally showed repertory films but mainly their programming was current indie films and foreign movies. It was a great venue because the movies they showed were often things you couldn't see anywhere else or were otherwise playing in other cities that are a pain in the rear end to deal with. The atmosphere was great too. It was a cafe in front and the screening room had couches in it. I saw a lot of really good poo poo there. My favorite experience was probably when I saw Rubber and counting my friend and myself there were four people in the theater. It was a huge loss. Also I've known a few theaters to show things without the proper rights or whatever and the loop hole they use is that they don't explicitly advertise what the movie is either by calling it a "secret screening" where they just tell you the day and time or instead of the title they give you some kind of hint as to what it is which is fairly obvious. One time I saw one advertised and the hint was something like "Power tool killing but with Dennis Hopper.". That said, I'm not a copyright lawyer so I'm not sure how this holds up but the places I know have done this are well established theaters that have been around for decades.

Man, all this talk reminds me of when a friend and I used to run a microcinema group at UC Davis in the mid-2000s where every Friday or Saturday night, we would break into one of the big lecture halls, usually Wellman or Olson Halls, and screen movies. A few of the films we screened were: Man Bites Dog Yi Yi The Pornographers The Day I Became a Woman Last House on the Left The Beyond Fast, Cheap, and Out of Control Those were the few I remembered off the top of my head. I really miss those days.

May is a Coen Bros. film fest in partnership w the Riverview and Heights theaters. I’m thinking about taking my GF to Lebowski at the Heights, and I’m def gonna see A Serious Man at the Trylon. I’ve never seen it before and I’ve heard it’s really underrated. Oh, and I watched the Alien UHD on Saturday and it was amazing. Just jaw dropping. I can’t wait to see some of the big hitters like Lawrence of Arabia in the format.

The Devil's Rain is a neat movie but I haven't seen their release of it... Psychomania is cool but DVD-only I believe.

It's pretty impressively done considering it was done entirely without a permit. If you only buy one though, I'll definitely second Christmas Evil.

Yeah I need to buy Liquid Sky eventually and give it a rewatch. It didn't stick with me somehow when I saw it X years ago, but then I see gifs and pictures from it and it's so gorgeous and weird and I need to watch it. Again, for the first time. Also I'll keep recommending There's Nothing Out There until more people buy and watch it.
