Battler, the literal stupidest man on earth. Why are you even here, Battler, why did you come back to this place so you could fuck literally everything up?

Hobgoblin2099 posted:

- "Get over yourself, slut. We're dead!" is a great line. Junko may be kind of annoyingly handled in DR3, but she gets great one liners.

It's kinda not, though. Not that I'm trying to shame the use of that word (OK, I tell a lie, I am- sex work should be destigmatized); I'm more concerned by what this shows about Junko's motivation. In that she doesn't have one; she just wants to watch and have fun, bro! But that's lovely; it's a poor interpretation of her character, and one more slap in the face to the people who got this far (even though those are coming too fast and sharp to notice).

Because the writers here failed to understand Junko, much as people continually fail to get the Joker, Deadpool- any drat character who's fundamental defining aspect seem to be "is wacky!", because the idea seems to be that that means these characters don't have any motivations other than to "be so random, lol." This is false- the reason these characters linger so long in the popular discourse is because they were handled by a really good writer who could handle the balancing act of making them funny and still allowing them to be characters with motivations and goals that they care about. Junko did all this because she cares about despair- because she believes that the natural chaos that despair brings is the only thing that can make her happy because it's the only thing she can't predict- that's her argument to Izuru. She should care about that; it's only the reason she did al of this. So to throw in a line to imply that she doesn't care about the things she's done is just nonsense, completely unsupported by anything and amplified by her writer's inability to think about things seriously.

Because this is the point about Junko: she is a good character. I like her a lot. And one of the things I like about her is that she fails. The entire point of the series is that her hypothesis about the nature of hope/despair (that was informed and supported by Hope's Peake and their emphasis on Ultimates) is complete bullshit, because she thinks she has the measure of people and she doesn't, any more than the Joker did in The Killing Joke. Adversity and horror can break people, yeah, but it can't break everyone; it can foster hope and resilience, as every DR videogame (yes, even silly UDG) has said at the end, and Junko can't grok that, so she eats poo poo. Junko ate poo poo, the Junko AI ate poo poo, McD's precious Monaca ate poo poo- they failed, and the reason they all work as characters is because they cared about that failure and then had their best moments as completely losing what was left of their minds.

Which brings me to what is probably the thing I hate most about this series, indicated by that line: where's the poo poo eating? You got this elaborate plan to cause all this despair by crushing the Future Foundation, the worlds last hope, and... who exactly is at the wheel right now? Who's left to eat poo poo, now all of the planners are now dead? There's Ryota, but he was a victim as much as anyone, and his entire inclusion in this anime is shoehorned in and stupid, so there's no satisfaction in anything that could happen to it, and everyone else is loving dead or gone off to space. What was wrong with Chisa staying alive and playing everyone against each other until we got to this point? What was wrong with Monaca? We got no one left, which means the only one left we had is deadass Junko who's plans all camwe together perfectly, and she doesn't even give a poo poo about that.

gently caress off, DR3. Just gently caress off forever.

Does this look like the face of mercy, kupo?
I don't see that line as Junko not caring -- I see it as her just trying to shut down what she sees as another lame hope-affirming speech, especially considering the source helped her spread so much despair for so long. Or, you know, point out that Chisa can't do anything, her hope doesn't matter, because she's dead.

No, Junko definitely doesn't care. She says so right before the "we're dead" line.

But, I mean, honestly, Junko shouldn't care anymore at this point. She's done. She pulled all her poo poo, set everything in motion, then eventually had everything culminate in her achieving the ultimate despair with her execution in DR1. She already had the greatest orgasm imaginable for her, and all this other stuff is just happening during the afterglow. She's Alexander the Great, having no more lands to conquer, except instead of weeping for it, she's turned to apathy towards the future, satisfied at what she has achieved for herself.

From her point of view, Junko won. All she ever wanted was to feel the greatest despair she could, and that she did. From then on, nothing mattered. The Junko AI is just replaying her greatest hits without understanding the reason behind them, and Monaca is acting like a prophet that didn't truly understand what her god was actually about and instead preaches a flawed interpretation. And looking on from the afterlife, Junko has no reason to care about either of them, because she's egotistical to the core, and she can't interact with anything going on in the world anymore.

Ultimately, had she succeeded at breaking everybody in DR1 and ended it with the DR1 crew dead instead of her, she would have moved on to her next project, probably involving the DR2 crew in some capacity, in search of her ultimate kick. But thanks to Makoto, she found it there, and with that, everything else ceases to have any point.

I mean, I might be completely misreading the character or misremembering stuff from earlier games. This is just the vibe I'm getting from her based on my memories.

EDIT: Well, let's just get the last update out there and officially put a bow on top of this.

Despair will never let you down.
Malice will never disappoint you.

Alright, here we are. The final episode. Helicopters are flying towards Future Foundation.

Ships are sailing in.

And an elite strike force of Ultimates is dropping in.

Also, it starts raining, because you need rain for a proper climax. That's just how it works.

Only 15 minutes to go.

A particular smaller ship has also arrived.

And with it, our old friend Hajime. He's talking to Chisa's corpse like a weirdo, saying that he now finally understands what's important and that Chiaki was right when she said that talent itself doesn't matter.

He says that he's done some horrible things with his abilities, but he's also brought everyone back with them, so it evens it out a little. And that you can either wait for a miracle, or you can make one.

Finally, Makoto is outside, staring at his destination.

Time for the final battle.

We rejoin Aoi having been found by Byakuya and Yasuhiro. Aoi asks where Makoto is, and Byakuya says that he gave him an armed escort.

And indeed he did.

However, they find themselves pinned down by fire from some brainwashed soldiers.

But then somewhere else, somebody kicks a small rock...

...which hits a larger rock...

...and eventually buries the entire group of soldiers in an avalanche. Man, that was a lucky break. I wonder who could've done something like that?

Oh, right.

Byakuya's getting word in that the enemy forces are dwindling - the agents are getting unexpected backup. Byakyua says that it must be the 77th class - the DR2 crew. Apparently, they were the ones that helped Byakuya and his agents when they were buried by rubble a while back.

Meanwhile, Kyosuke is out fighting a whole bunch of soldiers on his own.

However, it seems like somebody is attacking them from the back as well. Who is it?

Pffft. Kyosuke's response to this is "You mock me, Remnant".

So basically, we're now going to cut around to different scenes seeing what the other members of the DR2 class are up to.

The weird thing about this sequence is the Ultimates strike force, which seems like it had a fair amount of effort put in for basically throwaway scenes. So here we have Peko squaring off with the Ultimate Frisbee, I guess?

She uses a broken water tower as cover and smacks the poo poo out of the guy, knocking him out.

Fuyuhiko's here, too!

Next, we get Gundham facing off with the Ultimate Falconer, I suppose?

Gundham does his thing of sounding quite menacing but not actually doing anything, aided by some very convenient lightning (either that, or he actually does have some sort of powers, which, uh, has some strange implications I don't want to think about).

And the bird decides that he wants to switch sides.

Nekomaru is throwing down with some big-rear end robot.

However, there's a second robot right behind him.

So Kazuichi interferes with a squad of Mini-Nekomarus designed to be suicide bombers. Yeah. Sure.

Kazuichi immediately looks to Sonia for validation, and... she wasn't looking. However, she then says "outstanding work".

I'm pretty sure that's like the most validation Sonia has given Kazuichi period.

Somewhere else, Teruteru and Akane are working together in going up against...

...the Ultimate Circus Act, I guess. He throws knives at Akane, who just catches them out of the air with her mouth...

...and also breathes fire.

And then Akane just uses that fire to cook more meat, then beat the poo poo out of the guy.

Meanwhile, Hiroko is in trouble against... the Ultimate Manicurist? You know, I really want some sort of story involving these people. They seem super interesting!

However, she gets taken out by Mikan and her gigantic needle.

Hiyoko is her usual abrasive self at first, but does manage to spit out a thanks to Mikan.

She reacts as you'd expect.

Somewhere else, Mikan is perfoming her hit song Sending This To You.

And an entire crowd of soldiers just falls over in agony from hearing it.

However, there's... the Ultimate Sniper? This is getting weird. Anyway, the guy's got hearing protection.

But then Mahiru flashes him and takes care of that problem.

And all the while, Hajime is heading to the broadcasting facility...

...with a whole host of people in his way.

Hajime just tells them to step aside.

Only about seven and a half minutes to go. But then, Ryota is interrupted by an explosion!

Looks like Hajime just straight blasted through the door like he doesn't give a gently caress. Alrighty.

Ryota says that soon nobody will ever feel despair again, to which Hajime replies that that would also be the end of feeling in general - so nobody could feel grief over losing a loved one or anything like that. Ryota says that he didn't expect someone like Hajime to understand, and that humans are weak.

Then, the rest of the DR2 crew shows up as well. Hajime says that maybe they all aren't that strong and that he has his share of regrets as well, which is something they all have in common.

Of course, Ryota gets to trump everybody else's regrets by being somebody that enabled Junko to do what she did and as a result essentially ruined all of the DR2 crew's lives. As such, Ryota would rather wipe the slate clean and start over.

Hajime says he'd also prefer to wipe out the past, but that's not in his power. That some things have to be remembered. That Chiaki was real, and it's only because of her that they're still here. I'm not sure you can really conflate real Chiaki and AI Chiaki like that, but eh, what do I know, I wasn't in the simulation. The DR2 crew pipes in as well, saying that their job is now to undo what they can and atone for what they've did.

Ryota believes that he's beyond forgiveness, given what he's done. However, the DR2 crew agrees with him on that. Forgiveness is not what they're after. While he was wrong, so were they. They all made mistakes. Ryota rejects that, saying that they can't lump him in with them - the blame is entirely on him.

So Hajime says that that's all the more reason for him to join them. Also, the rain clears up right then for effect. I guess the Ultimate Weatherman is in there in Hajime as well.

Ryota hems and haws about joining them while everybody tells him they'd want him to join in their own way.

And then he finally cancels the broadcast with about five seconds to go. Close call, I guess.

Looks like our crisis is now resolved.

And all the while, Makoto was just standing outside. Welp, looks like you weren't needed after all. Could've just sat on your rear end and waited, no need to rush.

As the DR2 crew walks out past Makoto, he and Hajime share some knowing nods.

Mikan then stops and seems to want to ask Makoto something...

...but she then falls over as Nagito comes in to gush about how great Makoto's luck is and all that.

And then the rest just carry Nagito off becasue let's face it, he'd be there for hours if they let him.

And in the end, Makoto doesn't know what the gently caress.

So with basically everything resolved, Makoto returns to Byakuya, Aoi and Yasuhiro. Byakuya is watching a video message from the DR2 group, which is being broadcast wide.

In it, Hajime and the rest of the Remnants claim responsibility for the DR3 killing game, basically saving Future Foundation from having to explain that their leader was insane and wanted to brainwash the world. Byakuya thanks Makoto for a job well done, to which Makoto replies that he didn't do anything, it was the others. However, Byakuya says that even if the others were the heroes, it's not like heroes are created in a vacuum, and Makoto's hope was surely responsible for pushing them along.

Meanwhile, the DR2 crew is having a bit of a party on the boat they came in on.

Ryota is getting educated about the benefits of eating by Imposter!Byakuya...

...and Hajime is joined by Chiaki. Uh, wait, what?

Chiaki talks about how there was an AI that got created when the DR2 gang was put into the Neo World Program. The AI searched their minds for esteemed authority figures, people they'd trust and so on. The idea was to fuse the personalities into one AI, but it turns out that wasn't necessary.

All of them had the same person in mind - Chiaki.

She says she's not a perfect replica, but if someone lives on in their memories, they're never truly gone. She asks Hajime if this is the miracle worth believing in hope for, and he says that it's a happy ending at least. Chiaki then thanks Makoto for not letting her die in vain and asks if he's ready to go into the future, since there's a lot of work to be done.

However, Hajime is then interrupted by Nagito telling him that he has to hurry if he wants to have food.

And as he heads out, Chiaki slowly fades away.

And with that, the credits roll. The ship sails out to sea.

Kyosuke shows up to tell Makoto that as the one that took on the Remnants and won, he'll now have to bear the responsibility of being the hope the world needs. Makoto accepts the responsibility - the Remnants have their weight to carry, and so does he. Kyosuke asks what Makoto will do with that hope, and he doesn't know yet. Kyosuke then walks off, saying that he has his own cross to bear as we get a flashback to the scene of Chisa, Juzo and Kyosuke standing in front of Hope's Peak at their graduation.

We then get an internal monologue from Makoto about how nobody can see the future (except if you're Junko or Hajime, I guess?), how hope and despair mingle and you can't always tell which is which. But if you sit and wait, nothing is going to happen. You have to take it one step at a time, and you don't have to know the future to move forward. Just walk with your memories, look up at the sky, and say to yourself: There's always hope for tomorrow.

Ryota drops his phone into the ocean...

...and Makoto stares wistfully at the streak of Kyoko's blood he left on his hand.

We then cut to Mikan on the ship holding some sort of vial. It contains a drug that delays the poison from the bracelets. Hrm.

Nagito takes a look at it and recognizes it as something Seiko made. Mikan goes on to say that it would put you into a coma until somebody came to help you, that she helped somebody that took that drug, and that that person should be up and about any moment now.

And there that person is.

We then cut to several months later, back at Hope's Peak.

Rebuilding efforts are going on, and everybody's contributing in their own way. And hey, Komaru and Toko are here too!

Makoto sits alone in a classroom. And then, somebody enters the room and delivers the greatest line there is:

"...yeah, I don't get this either. Pretty sure I died."

OK, I think we need a bit of an explanation here. Kyoko here actually says something along the lines of "they're waiting for you, Headmaster Naegi", to which Makoto's reply of "thank you, I'll be right there" actually makes sense. But when the dubbed episode first came out, we got the above line from Kyoko instead. It was fairly quickly announced that an outtake had mistakenly been left in the released episode, and a corrected version was released afterwards. But personally, I don't believe this was a mistake. I think this was intentional. It's just too perfect to put the cherry on top for this dub, which has several times veered close to "official abridged version". And that line is basically the perfect culmination to everything, especially how Kyoko was pretty much asspulled back to life.

Like, I'm 98% sure there is some sort of shot of Kyoko's dead body that shows a weird little thing that could maybe be a vial somewhere on the side that hints at this being the case, but that doesn't stop this from being a total asspull to just add another fakeout death in the DR1 crew to the list.

Anyway, that's the end of the episode, and that's the end of Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak Academy. Have I said "the end" enough yet? The end, the end, the end. There.

What the gently caress just happened?: We get a big battle between Ryota's side of brainwashed Future Foundation soldiers and Makoto's side, consisting of Byakuya's agents and the DR2 class, which has also arrived at the Future Foundation headquarters to stop this. We get a bunch of scenes of the DR2 class fighting other Future Foundation Ultimates, and they eventually reach Ryota at the broadcasting facility. They end up convincing him to stop the broadcast before it starts and join them in their quest to atone for their sins, and they end up sailing off on the ship they arrived on, with Hajime ending up with an imaginary friend version of Chiaki. Meanwhile, Makoto takes over as headmaster of Hope's Peak, which is being rebuilt. Also, Kyoko is alive because she took a drug that Seiko cooked up that delays the effects of the bracelet poison and got saved by Mikan later on. So, to recap: Makoto gets his waifu back, Hajime gets a tulpa of his waifu, and Kyosuke gets to eat poo poo.

So, with everything done, I suppose I should give my closing thoughts.

- DR3 was not exactly well received, and things like fake-killing off Aoi, then real-killing off Kyoko only to have that turn out to be fake as well did not help at all. It basically took a dump over quite a few things from DR1, DR2 and UDG, especially with its over-reliance on using brainwashing to solve its problems, retroactively turning Chiaki into a weirdly perfect cinnamon roll character with an obsession over Hajime instead of what she was in DR2, wasting its opportunity to focus on the DR2 class's fall to despair, rewriting characters like Junko, Mukuro and Monaca, and so on and so forth. When people reminiscence about DR3, it's mostly about the experience of seeing it with others and having a great time shittalking it and memeing things to death.

- Ultimately, however, I liked it. Then again, I'm kinda dumb that way. I just really enjoyed the journey of it all. It was really stupid and poo poo over established stuff, but screw it, that doesn't minder my enjoyment of that established stuff, and I can take myself away from that established stuff and enjoy the dumb new stuff as well - Despair Nazi and Space NEET Monaca, Punished Kyosuke, our boy Juzo, Dub Junko... there's a ton of stuff that was just fun to take in for me.

- Of course, there was also stuff I didn't like. I was really down on the DR3 version of Chiaki. It felt like her obsession over Hajime came at the cost of her class at times, which also made it less plausible how she became this magic glue that kept everybody together. And of course, I too wish that instead of the Despair Side we got, we could've had a series entirely focused on Junko corrupting the DR2 class one by one, but alas, it wasn't to be.

- As an aside, LPing an anime in screenshot form, as it were, is a really loving weird experience. It's kinda like describing a cutscene... except it never ends. It's weird. Though I wouldn't be opposed to doing it again, if the situation were right.

- Finally, before we finish this, there's one more thing. I promised you a compilation video, and I keep my promises. Now, this video gets automatically blocked on Youtube, so instead, I had to find an alternative host and settled on Mega.

And with that, I bid you farewell. It's been one hell of a ride, but I think I'm now done artificially extending it. I'll see you in my next thread... whatever it may be. I'm not sure on that yet. But for now...

Jack in!! MegaMan, Execute!
- Oh boy, the SHSL Task Force of Literally Who in the gently caress Are These People and Why Should I Care?

- Hajime calling Chisa "sensei" was a little weird because she was never his teacher. But I guess I'll give it a pass since she was fairly nice to him the... three or so times they met? Also Hajime has heterochromia now because reasons. I guess it's slightly less weird than him being a permanent Super Saiyan like at the end of DR2.

- In what is the anime's only addressing of the fact that the DR2 cast has Junko body parts, Komaeda removed his Junko arm and replaced it with a robotic one in order to better highlight the fact that he's the Revolver Ocelot of this series. Don't ask me how the rest are supposed to be doing any kind of fighting with all of the body parts they've replaced. Unless Junko was lying about that and only Nagito and Fuyuhiko actually did that.

- Everyone from DR2 (that wasn't an AI) survived, has no hard feelings about the fact that a number of them killed each other, and also got over all of their individual reasons for liking one another that even existed before they went into VR! Nobody even dislikes Nagito anymore for... some reason! Normally I wouldn't complain about something like this because it's supposed to be a "Aww, look, they're coming together" kind of moment, but it feels so... saccharine. How did they even get to this point? By making everyone want to save Chiaki before they got brainwashed?

- That being said, I would've laughed if Kyosuke was momentarily left wondering why he suddenly had a twin considering how everyone falls for the Impostor's disguises.

- TheMcD didn't mention this, but there was a gag with Gundam. Throughout the whole series, they avoided using his name because of copyright or something. In this episode, Gundam decides to "break the seal on his name" and loudly proclaim that he is Tanaka Gundam. Was kinda funny.

- For the entirety of the run of DR3, there were a lot of jokes about how Mahiru probably wasn't all that good at being a SHSL Despair compared to the others, even though some people mentioned that she probably took disturbing photos to break people and things like that. Then we get to this episode where she takes a guy out with the flash on her camera. That was a source of amusement for a while.

- It sure is nice that everyone is coming together to give comfort to this guy that is only known by two of them! And nobody apparently holds a grudge over the fact that his video brainwashed them for years and made them do things like kill their parents! So ultimately, Ryota gets to run away with the people whose lives he ruined and get a happy ending while never staying to face the retribution for what he caused with his inaction and secrecy. Great stuff. Really nice.

- Makoto was worthless for almost the entirety of DR3. It's honestly amazing. Literally the only thing he did was tell Munakata to find some chill. So in the end, Future barely did anything with the DR1 cast and Despair barely did anything with the DR2 cast! Great stuff. Really nice.

- I think Hiyoko makes a remark about Nagito having a gay crush on Makoto after they drag him away.

- When did the Despairs find time to make that video in-between saving everyone and beating up the SHSL Seriously Who the Hell Are These People? I guess they could have made it back on Jabberwock, but it's really funny that they had time to do that, sail to Future Foundation HQ, and still do more than Makoto did.

- The Imposter is... back to imitating Byakuya? So what was the point of him taking off his mask in Despair!? You can't just have him decide to be his real self around everyone then but then he decides he'd rather be Byakuya now! Pick one or the other, and you already picked in Despair!

- Kyosuke was apparently supposed to die, but he didn't. And I'm okay with that because he was the most consistently entertaining part of Future. Godspeed, you beautiful lunatic.

- Tying back to what I said earlier about Ruruka being set up to be a hate sink while Seiko is set up to be a good girl who did nothing wrong, here's her saving Kyoko's life.

- Also, Kyoko survives this, making this the FIFTH DR1 fakeout death! (Aoi, Byakuya, Kyoko, Makoto, Aoi again) That said, the outtake line making it in at the end almost made it worth it. ...Well, not really. It was at least chuckle-worthy, though.

- There are many things that bother me about DR3. I didn't like Tengan's stint as Mastermind. I didn't like how Junko just magically despaired everyone with brainwashing. I didn't like how Makoto did nothing and the DR1 cast were shielded from death by the disposable DR3 cast, most of whom weren't even full characters. I didn't like how DR2's cast just kind of exists until it's time for them to become evil or save everything. But the thing that REALLY bothers me the most is that the cast rebuilds the drat school that caused everything that happened in the series. Remember how I said that the series shits on the message that "It's okay to be normal"? Here you go.

Is it weird that I'm more bothered by the fact that Makoto and company are restarting Hope's Peak Academy and just... hoping nothing goes wrong with it again in the future than I am any of the other stuff people complained about regarding this anime?

*finishes reading hobgoblin's post* I guess not. Validation!

Anyway, anyone who wants to wash the taste out of their mouths can check out my LP of V3 instead, which I'm sure everyone will agree is a much better story.

Oh wait, I'm gonna be recapping the anime in that thread, too.

Despair will never let you down.

Honestly, I had this incredibly stupid idea (I often have incredibly stupid ideas, you might have noticed) of taking the Hope's Peak saga and just going to town on interpreting it as a leftist critique of how liberal "meritocratic" democracy (represented by Hope's Peak and its elites) is incapable of sufficiently addressing the apocalyptic dangers posed by climate change (represented by the forces of despair).

And one thing that I really got hung up on in considering that was that very point of Makoto just rebuilding Hope's Peak at the end. The purported revolutionary who worked within the system cannot possibly comprehend a world without the system that formed him, and as such he can only simply recreate it with no consideration being given to the inherent trappings of that system, doomed to repeat its mistakes.

It honestly could've worked - of course it could, you can read anything into anything given enough effort - but my god, it would've been so incredibly stupid. Probably deserving of me recording it in voice while doing an absolutely horrendous Zizek impression or something like that for added effect.

That could've been a fitting April Fools' Day thing, actually.

Thanks for showing these infamous parts of the franchise. I'll echo the sentiments on rebuilding Hope's Peak Academy. Pretty much every single thing we see about its history shows that it was rotten from the start. It has a great deal of complicity if not outright responsibility for the world's descent. It seems like just about the last thing that needed to come back.

"Welcome to pound town, Slifer slacker!"

I will be the one to stand up for Makoto, Hope’s Peak had problems because of the board of directors and it’s original “secret” purpose, which culminated in the creation of Izuru Kamakura the Ultimate Hope(Talented Individual). Without them the school can be more like an actual school, especially because Makoto and Kyoko both carry Jin’s will.

Jin for the record was repeatedly arguing with and pushing back against the board of directors, but he didn’t have the leverage to stop things like Izuru or Junko’s admission. Ultimately whilst they are rebuilding the school they’re in a very different place with a very different purpose to the original founding, this isn’t someone enamoured with the ideal of talent creating hope, this is Makoto Naegi, who’s hopeful ideal is working together and helping people solve their personal problems so they may be the best person they can be.

Anyway my interpretation of what is up with Hajime is that he’s now got three people in his head. Hajime, who interacts with the outside world and has all the friendships and memories, Izuru, who manages the infinite talents surgically given to Hajime so that Hajime doesn’t break, and Chiaki, who is a ghost or a memory or something that ended up written in his head as a separate person for him to talk to.

Eventually they’ll build a robot and Hajime I’ll use his talents to download Chiaki from his brain into her new robot shell, preferably the A.I. Chiaki because DR3 is dumb and bad.

- TheMcD didn't mention this, but there was a gag with Gundam. Throughout the whole series, they avoided using his name because of copyright or something. In this episode, Gundam decides to "break the seal on his name" and loudly proclaim that he is Tanaka Gundam. Was kinda funny.

He even says something like "The impending Sunrise will no longer stop me." Sunrise is the company that produces Gundam.

:laffo: I never knew that little detail, that's hilarious.

So yeah, this anime has so many dumb things that make no sense, and other dumb things that actively make the story worse. But I'll second the sentiments that the anime is certainly entertaining and interesting in its stupidity. And there are some very fun individual moments. Like Ultimate Imposter becoming Kyosuke #2 right here, that was one of my favourites. (imo he should have kept this act up longer, and given Kyosuke the same kind of treatment as Byakuya got so people like his fake version better)

And of course, this story gave us Komaeda walking right up to Junko and just pulling out a loving gun, so it can't be all bad.

I think the answers for these go together -- they make the video before leaving on the boat. They just haven't gone back to normal yet.

The video is explicitly after they stop Ryota, because he’s in it too as a part of the Remnants. Or not and I’m remembering jack and poo poo. Maybe Ryota is filming it though.

TOO MANY PEOPLE MERLOCK!
ONLY ONE DIJON!
Since TheMcD isn't talk about it, there was a Special animation that came with Danganronpa V3 in Japan: Super Danganronpa 2.5 and it has a connection to Danganronpa 3..

It is basically following Nagito in a world without ultimate talants yet he still has some weird luck aura around him. There is nothing really important until the end where it turns out that after dying in the Neo World program, this is what his mind created as a coping mechanism. Hajime has been diving into the program to revive all the people that "died" during DR2 and Nagito is the last one to be revived. After Nagito wakes up it basically leads to the DR2 cast boarding the boat and heading into episode:hope

kind of a crude summery but it fills in a few blanks between when we see Hajime staring at the fleet that was approaching the island that held the DR2 cast and when they show up in episode:hope

So every new character introduced in this game (including real Chiaki) died beside Ryota and Kyosuke while all of the cast from previous games are alive. Unlike the games, plot armors are in full effect for this anime.

I don't like how they just handwave the DR2 character being out of a coma. It makes that game's murders feel cheap.

That Gundam trivia is nice, though :allears:

I think there were jokes about Kyosuke's true ultimate talent being Ultimate Edgelord (ALL MY FRIENDS ARE DEAD!). Honestly I've come to the conclusion that before he was the Ultimate Student Council President (Which appears to be applied to every Student Council President at Hope's Peak) he was probably the Ultimate Swordsman or Iajitsu user or something.

This is magnificent and I'm so glad you took the time to put it together. Junko in particular is a joy. (I'm also glad you included Komaeda clasping Naegi's hand and fawning alarmingly over him, which is one of my favourite moments in the entire franchise.)

Honestly, more so than rebuilding Hope's peak, it's the remnants biting the bullet and taking the blame for the future foundation that offends me.

The future foundation is responsible for everything. They're the idiots on the board who messed up Hope's peak. They're the homicidal nutjobs who opt to kill first and ask questions later. They're the ones who literally wanted to execute the remnants in the tube rather than save them with cyberspace.

The remnants have no reason to care, emphasize with, or defend the monsters and yet they do.

In that bonus episode, it is said that Hajime was the one who brought them all out of it. There are worse handwaves than saying "the Ultimate Every Single Superpower Talent did it".

There are a lot better ones too... the best one being not making the wave at all.

No, I don't like that there was no one who didn't come out of the coma. Or that they took the blame for the future foundations actions for essentially no reason. Or that they apparently have the memories of all the things they did as the Remnants of Despair, and... essentially look and act the same as they did before being despaired, just like 5% sadder and sporting a robot arm or two. That is the biggest bullshit of all, because these guys ended the world. They killed or Despaired their family and friends, spread as much chaos and destruction as they could, and mutilated their own bodies- do not tell me that doesn't leave the heaviest scars imaginable. Teruteru probably killed his own mother, Kazuki built the machines that razed entire cities, and Akane is implied to have eaten people. And before you start, no, it shouldn't matter that they had all been brainwashed at the time- if anything, that should make it worse- and no, it also doesn't matter that Hajime is now the Ultimate Everything Ever- no one's so good that they can make scarring not have happened. And here they are, alone on an island with the corpse of their teacher, the guy who created the technology that caused all this, and the guy that made them live with the memories of what they had done instead of killing them. I don't have to see them on a 24-hour suicide watch or crying or cutting themselves all the time, but I should believe that they are suffering, or have suffered. And I didn't, at all, because apparently nobody cares about anything.

The saddest part about all this, is that even with the stupid brainwashing, this could have worked. Not with the silly, convoluted plan and not with Ryota (at least not this last part, because I do kinda dig his thing with the Imposter), but the bones of this are all salvageable: Makoto coming to an island to answer for his decision and being caught in a killing game, and his trying to defend his decision while the FF_well, the Juzo and Kyosuke portion of it-tells him that they played him for a sap- that's all fine. But instead, why not bring the remnants in earlier, and throw doubt on whether they're part of the killing game or not? Heck, they could not be a monolith on this: some could arrive and seem to be assisting the killing game, others could have beef with Makoto specifically for saddling them with memories/watching their comatose friends for the rest of their lives, others might just want to find the other despairs and bring them back to Jabberwock. Why not have them appear suddenly and seem to save Team Mokoto one minute and hurt them the next, and refuse to answer if they're part of the killing game or not, and why not have them go more into detail about the things they did? It's one thing to hear Hajime say "we've done terrible things"- why not have Mikan, for example, describe the horrible ways she killed men in that placid, airy tone she used when in Despair-mode, and come back to one question- why did you let us live, knowing what we've done? Because as I recall, Makoto did know what they've done and tried to cure them anyway, so that's a completely valid question, and this would also give Makoto a little bit more time to unpack his decision. Was it really to give them a chance for redemption, or was it to make them suffer with the memories of their actions until they did the honorable thing? Can somebody who ended the world be forgiven, even if they weren't in control of their actions? That's the question I thought this anime was going to grapple with, but I guess we're all done with struggling here.

And while I'm on a tear: how weaksauce was it that we just cut away whenever Hajime was about to do something cool? I got through all this poo poo and don't even get Izuru-Hajime dispatching entire teams of armed guards with his bare hands, after 3 games and an anime of build up? Come on.

FUCK FLOWERS. JUST...FUCK 'EM.

Sir, this is a monoburger drive through.

In all honesty I think with the DR2 group they should have had their memories stayed wiped like with the DR1 group, or else just have not showed up at all.

YOU'VE GOT THAT WRONG!
Everyone else has already expressed the many legitimate problems with this anime, so I'm just going to drop my personal petty grievance in here: we don't get to see the reunion of the Naegi siblings! We just get 'oh, yeah, Komaru's here too' at the very end, but we never see the moment she and Makoto meet again, or even the two of them in the same shot. I'd been looking forward to their reunion since Komaru first made contact with Makoto in UDG; it could have been a great moment, after everything they've been through to survive and see each other again. Given the nature of the series, I thought there was a chance they'd never meet again, but it's not as if they're minor characters; I hadn't thought they'd meet again and the series would just skip over it!
