Finally had a night off, so I just started watching V/H/S on Shudder. Disjointed as it might be, I think I prefer the unrelated-vignettes-in-a-frame-story structure to the setup from something like Hell House. Prologue: These guys are shitheads and I can't say I'll mind seeing them horribly killed. Episode 1: From the very moment that Lily appears you have a general idea of how things are going to end, although I hadn't expected her to actually like him like him. My immediate assumption was that Clint was going to die, but instead it's the other two guys getting horribly dismembered and Clint... I guess gets carried off to her love nest? I'm assuming she's a succubus or something, I don't know. The scene of the two guys hiding in the bathroom together while they listen to the third guy die was more effective than actually watching it would've been, I think. Also, compound fractures. Gack. Interlude: The popscare with the guy in the basement wasn't scary, but it made me sit up and pay attention, which I hadn't really expected. Episode 2: After the first one, surprised by how short this one was. You can feel the tension in the couple's relationship almost immediately, although I feel like the little turn at the end would've been more effective if there'd been more setup. Like, the fortune-telling machine announces a past love returning, but there's only one other character in the story and she clearly dislikes the dude and feels more attraction for the woman. I was less surprised by the final makeout shot than by the fact that they hadn't built it up more. Interlude: "What the gently caress was that?" I notably don't say after the video of a demon woman tearing two men apart and flying off with a third. Also the guy in the chair is gone, unless there's another chair. Episode 3: And now it's... a ghost story? At least this cast is more likable than the last two, they're just dumb teens/college students and the creeping is more-or-less mutual. Wasn't sure what to expect when Wendy started hinting at what happened before, although the turn at the end (actually closer to the middle) was pretty nice and not what you'd first expect. I guess the shot at the end is supposed to echo the appearance of the carcass the guys found earlier? Is this a time loop? Then again, the remembered bodies are different from the ones we see. Interlude: Okay, I guess it wasn't the same guy between the first two interludes (they kinda blend together) and the TVs are eating people who watch the tapes? Eh. Episode 4: So it's time for the video-conferencing episode. Again I feel like this one could've benefited from being longer; the interlude in the middle where she's unconscious suggests that there's a lot more going on story-wise (aliens?) but then it cuts to the scene with a different woman at the end, I guess because we need to meet a quota of loathsome guys per episode or something. Interlude: I guess we're down to mustache man now. Oh, and I guess dead guy was a murderous zombie. Okay, sure. Episode 5: An actual haunted house story now, except that despite having no backstory at all it still feels more cohesive than Hell House did. Okay, having watched the whole thing i retract my earlier comment about the frame story working better. If the frame story is going to be an actual story it needs to be better than what we got here. The individual vignettes were pretty good, though, although I think the second still could've used a little more development. Seyser Koze fucked around with this message at 06:49 on May 3, 2019 |

Just remembered THE DEVIL INSIDE because of this conversation and got real mad. The loving website isn't even up anymore. edit: also willing to sort of stick up for unrated Bye Bye Man. Maybe it was rock bottom expectations but I remember it being absolutely fine and not even the worst movie I'd seen that week, much less that year. The Bye Bye Man is at least funny. If I had to pick the worst horror film of the decade that I've seen, or at least just the one I had the most viscerally negative reaction to, it would have to be Beyond the Gates

Prime video and by extension the Shudder add-on for prime have the worst subtitles. I live in a small house and I'm awake all night because I work 6p - 6a. I use subtitles and watch movies quietly when my wife is sleeping. Prime's subs are often way ahead of the movie or otherwise mis-timed. It sucks. Sometimes they just don't even show up.

I blind bought it and felt like the movie wanted me to stare at my phone for 90 minutes.

Frozen was nuts, goddamn. My Green-a-thon is going good at this rate. Frozen was def way better than Hatchet. I loved it, and it gave me a borderline anxiety attack. Also props to Green for also sharing or at least putting in a line about the sarlacc being scary as poo poo. I’ll do a write up tomorrow for the horror thread. But rn I wanna wrap myself up in a blanket and stay warm as hell lol

Watching Hell House LLC 2 and it's really trying for some Grave Encounters 2 stuff but is falling right on it's face. I will probably still watch Hell House LLC 3 though. It's apparently going to be a Shudder exclusive and release later this year.

Finally got around to Let's Scare Jessica to Death. It's just dripping with atmosphere. Definitely would make a great double feature with something like The Changeling or Don't Look Now. I love when a movie has the confidence to have everything just right out there in broad daylight. And the daylight really works in this case because it allows for some excellent scenery and outdoor cinematography.

What was your thought about the mute woman who brought them to the antique dealer’s body? Another past victim made mute by the knife or something? Why only one woman when the rest of the colony were men?

Maybe a mother and father(so maybe she's the antique dealer's daughter?) who moved there and were taken/killed by Emily. Why she's still hanging around there is another question, maybe she thought she could save her father somehow.

NoES 3 is considered just as good as the original by many. hard to argue it's not the best of the sequels, at least.

It's a weird rec but if you liked the first and might be mildly interested in the 3rd, watch the second one.

I didn't even like Hellhouse LLC that much so I never bothered with the sequel. Never quite got what the thread liked about it. I guess I'm in the minority that likes big crazy things to happen in found footage. A haunted house isn't enough for me, I need more.

Yeah, I'm definitely interested in the 3rd, so I'll wait until it comes out and then do them both together. Maybe it will help, kinda like how Quantum of Solace greatly benefits from watching it back to back with Casino Royale. I wouldn’t say I loved Hellhouse LLC as much as I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did. Unlike this morning when I watched the first 25 minutes of Nekromantik and was not surprised that there are two overlong scenes of people pissing in the first five minutes.

Finally saw Us yesterday and think it's really good. I appreciated that they didn't like over explain the inner workings of what you find out in the third act and really loved the first time the you see duplicates that aren't of the main character's family show up. But also how it was like just "explained" enough that like, yeah these people who were built to live underground forever all have this one generic outfit because hey that's what was around at the time, their food is an animal that gets experimentally tested on often that also multiplies very fast, etc., and so on. I really like how the story starts out so small and personal and how it unravels more and more as it goes on and how that plays into both its opening and ending without it ever becoming impersonal.

Barbara Crampton really should have been in Beyond the Gates more, when she did show up it looked like she was having fun hamming it up for the role. I really wanted to like that movie but the pacing was so weird. They're in the middle of this crazy possessed board game where people are dying and they keep taking random breaks to go pack boxes or whatever. A dude's head loving explodes and then the next scene is a casual chat over dinner.
