Welcome to the Fruits Basket thread!

Fruits Basket is a new adaptation of a shoujo manga series written and illustrated by Natsuki Takaya. It was published from 1998 to 2006 and also had an anime adaptation that came out in 2001. The series' title comes from the name of a popular game played in Japanese elementary schools, which is alluded to in the series.

From what i can gather the author wasn't very happy with the original adaptation and is more directly involved with this one. And also, the series seems to have been rather formative for the Western fandom when it came out and a lot of people remember it fondly. Although i've meant to read or watch it for many years, i've never actually gotten around to it so i'm going in basically blind.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M7f41OJfcM

quote:

After the accident in which she lost her mother, 16-year-old Tohru moves in with her grandfather, but due to his home being renovated, is unable to continue living with him. Claiming she will find someone to stay with but also fearing the criticism of her family and not wanting to burden any of her friends, Tohru resorts to secretly living on her own in a tent in the woods.

One night on her way back from work, she finds her tent buried underneath a landslide. Yuki Soma, the "prince" of her school, and his cousin Shigure Soma, a famous author, stumble across Tohru's situation and invite her to stay with them until her grandfather’s home renovations are complete.

But she soon learns a Big Secret

Every member of the Soma family is under a curse to turn into one of the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals when under stress or when hugged by someone of the opposite sex. There is also a Cat who is not a part of the Zodiac (or Soma clan) but would very much like to be.

So far there's been a nice mix of drama, comedy, and romance with a pretty good love triangle seeming to have formed already. With many more Zodiac animals still to be introduced i'm sure there's much more story to unfold along with way more drama.

Streaming on Crunchyroll and Funimation (who i believe is also doing a dub)

Because it's a beloved series, a bit older, and already completed, spoilers both large and small abound. But i do ask that you please be considerate about things you may know and tag carefully when or if discussing anything yet to come. Thank you!

Also, if anyone has an effortpost in them about the manga, the original anime, or the early 2000s fandom for it that would be pretty cool! Just write carefully if you think you might spoil stuff i guess.

Not really an effortpost, but the original run was my first experience with the idea that anime could be calming/relaxing, rather than exciting. It also got creative with its presentation in a way that prefigured the rise of Shinbo, especially the episode where the Yuki fanclub visits Hana's house.

If the author was upset about the show, the only real grounds would be a) they shuffled around the order of some things later on and b) the last half of the final episode was an anime-original end that was kinda slapped together. Everything else was extremely faithful to the original and very well put together, especially the soundtrack from the sadly departed Ritsuko Okazaki.

I remember reading something in like author's notes or a fan-book that Takaya actually mostly liked the anime (and also that she was over the moon due to Domon and Treize's Voice Actors voicing Kyo and Shigure respectively). So maybe it was the fact that it has such a slap-dash ending that bothered her?

I wish i could find more details (for all i know it's a weird US-side fan rumour), but i keep seeing references to the idea she was at least disappointed in the 2001 version and has insisted that the new one not re-use any staff or even cast.

If anyone knows any more about it i'd love to hear.

I remember the voice actor tidbit a lot better because, while he's persona-non-grata around these parts (for good reason), I remember back when I had started living where I currently do (almost 20 years ago! :corsair:) and going to a Local Con, where I purchased several manga and reading the Watsuki's notes on a Rurouni Kenshin volume that made references to the drama CD that had just came out and him totally fanboying over the fact that Seki voiced Sanosuke.

The Takaya thing I can't confirm right now because my daughter has most of my Shoujo manga collection with her, but given how much her wife-to-be absolutely loves reading old manga, maybe I can pester her to see if she can give me the deets on that? :shobon:

Really calling the original ending merely slapdash kind of understates it: old show is missing the entire back half of the manga and there's a major, MAJOR change to one of the characters.

E: with regards to that change, it seems with the voice performance we're not even pretending on that front for the new show

got roped into watching this by one of my friends. to my surprise i'm actually pretty into it.

if i were to say something like "i can see why this is a classic" how badly would that betray my lack of understanding of the numerous changes this adaptation makes to the source material

Are you watching the 2001 or 2019 version? Aside from the 2001 version having the introduction of one character much earlier than in the manga (they wouldn't have appeared at all by the time the show was done otherwise) and having the last half of the final episode conclude a character arc that doesn't touch on how the manga version of that arc progressed at all, both are extremely faithful adaptations of the manga, to the point where you can constantly go "I remember this exact shot/panel from the other versions."

Living out of a tent in Japan is the easymodo of homelessness. Just plunk down a little bit out of the way and people don't seem to care.

The original was one of the first internet fansubs I followed, but don't remember a whole lot other than not finding the ending satisfying. This should be a fun way to re-experience it, and it seems pretty good from what I've watched so far.

Hearing her do that inflection(?) thing she does for younger characters in 2019 is oddly comforting in these mad times.

I have always perceived Fruits Basket to be one of the most memorable manga with regards to having lengthy and meaty character arcs, so you can expect pretty much everyone to eventually grow substantially. Due to the size of the cast some of it can feel a little forced or slapdash but I would definitely consider it an overall strength of the story.

Consequently this is part of why I never got into the original anime run; not having the back half of the manga meant that a lot of the defining character moments that actually stuck with me weren't there so you just had some of the comedy and the family being dicks to Kyo.

I started watching this and it appears to involve the most abusive and dysfunctional "family" I have ever seen. I volunteered at a domestic violence shelter for 10 years and this show just makes me sad because I can just mentally tick off the boxes of the various kinds of abusers and mental illnesses.

I asked my wife to spoil the whole series for me since she read all the manga and knowing everyone's motivations is the only way I can stomach all the horrible poo poo these people do to each other.

It makes me even more sad to think that one of the reasons this manga is so popular is that tons of people can probably relate to at least one character really hard because they've seen that stuff in their own lives or have friends who have been through it :(

Edit to avoid being a total downer: Uo and Hanajima are probably the best friends I've ever seen in any series and Uo is far and away my favorite character. She doesn't take poo poo from anyone and viciously protects her friends. My favorite joke in the series so far is when the Yuki fan club girl says "stop bringing steel pipes to school!". gently caress you, mean girl.

I remember the author comments in the manga mentioning "since they're martial artists Yuki and Kyo should really have some muscle tone, but that's not my aesthetic so whatever," so I'm mildly amused to note that the redesign has made Kyou slightly less of a noodle.

(Although, what was really funny along those lines was seeing that the most recent Tenchi Muyo anime has decided to start drawing Tenchi as a stud, when the original anime had him as yet another noodle boy.)

If you're looking at English Wikipedia you'll probably get somewhat of a wrong impression because they aren't nearly as rabid as cataloguing people's literal every anime appearance as Japanese Wikipedia

More on-topic: for some reason I don't remember I have only one Fruits Basket DVD with episodes 1-6 so I guess I unintentionally avoided the less-good half. As noted above this new version is frequently scene-for-scene with what I remember from watching it.

The series is definitely about a cycle of abuse, but it never felt like misery porn to me. Just about every character we meet understands that the situation is wrong and is trying to find some way to escape or solve it, even if they sometimes lash out and hurt those around them.

Something I noticed this episode is that they have not taken any steps to modernize this story. The whole plotline about Yuki and Kyo having trouble finding Tohru's house in the smartphone era would be very different.
