I picked up a lot of... grindhouse style releases like these when they were first on Amazon for like $20~ or so. I knew if I were ever going to watch them, I would have to grab them as soon as possible.

I also have Miami Connection and that seems to have gone up in price.

I do admit I don't think Gone with the Pope is really that great, it's more the legacy behind it, I think.

Miami Connection went out of print before and then came back. The prices did go high the first time around. I'm wondering if it's an artificial scarcity thing. I managed to get one in that second wave.

edit: It appears that a bunchy of the less popular titles are still in print/available for normal retail price so it's either the thing I said or they keep having to make more because it's a boutique label and they never have enough to meet the demand and everyone just loses their poo poo about it.

I know at least one of those instances is because Miami Connection was a Drafthouse Films release and they abruptly stopped most production not long ago. Some of their more common releases can still be found pretty cheap, but some stuff like Miami Connection and The FP go for $40+ now.

The FP?

Also, apparently the region one Arrow Films release of the Stuff is out of print now I guess. The region 2 is not and sells for about half of the original retail of the US release.

It’s a tremendously stupid movie about rival gangs who fight to the death using Dance Dance Revolution that looks like a Funny or Die trailer parody but is somehow an actual full-length movie. It has all the hallmarks of an obnoxious tryhard ‘made-to-be-cult’ movie, but it actually manages to be extremely funny and entertaining, particularly with a crowd.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0IL4Iu1U3ww

I saw that trailer and immediately wrote it off, but some friends convinced me to go to a midnight screening and it was a blast.

The FP 2 is serious trash though, don’t bother with that one.

If Drafthouse Films Blu-rays are randomly going out of print, you best buy two copies of The Visitor just to be on the safe side.

No joke, that was the first thing I checked.

Is there any site that catalogs what is and isn't out of print? I had one I use to check and it was for a while really good at keeping track of these things but it appears to no longer be as reliable as was. This is that site: http://dvdlist.kazart.com/DVDList2.php

Yeah it's not absurdly rare or anything but I bought my copy of Miami connection for $13. I could easily sell it and make three times that.

Its abnormal since most dvds and blurays you'd buy become worthless (besides marvel and Disney which will stay above ten bucks I think.

I'll probably always keep Miami connection because I think it's my favorite of the scholocky films of the 80s. Kim really tried so hard on this film.

I buy movies for the movies and rarely give any thought to special features so I don't really care about that stuff. That's why I think most good camp movies are a once a lifetime (of the director) kind of thing. Either they get better, or the movies doesn't do well enough and they don't make any more, or they become aware of their camp and try to force it.

The room and Miami connection are king of camp for me.

Nothing can be forced to be created like Tommy's dialog or the Tae Kwon Do song. It just... Comes into existence from their genuine earnest to make what they think is a good movie.

I will say I do think it's nice to have that stuff but the special features have never been a deciding factor in me buying a video release of something ever.

Iron Crowned posted:

I would argue that Tammy and the T-Rex is a horror movie but not on purpose.

I've kind of learned not to decide that something isn't coming to blu-ray or will otherwise not be reissued. A few times I bought a DVD and then shortly after there was a blu-ray announced and a few other times I paid 40-50 dollars for something that got reissued. So I'm just not doing that again.

Amazon market place sellers usually list everything for double or triple what it sells for on ebay, which is the case here. But that's been rendered moot anyway. I see such absurd prices on Amazon marketplace that I often wonder if some of them are poorly thought money laundering schemes or something.

The whole series was animated at 16:9, which is usually a sign that it's HD. Even if not, AT's art style lends itself better to upscaling (with all the solid colors and thick, clean lines) than most animation.

I remember early on watching Adventure Time and either watching or rewatching some episodes on demand, which were available as SD only, and there was a marked loss of detail in certain scenes, to the point where you really couldn't tell precisely what was happening. Like 90% of it is probably fine but it's a series that threw in tiny details and wasn't afraid to use the whole frame to make the actual focal point of the scene rather small.

It's the first show I think of as pushing me into the HD era, and premiered shortly after I got an HDTV.

I'm totally fine watching tons of things on DVD, though early non-anamorphic discs are only barely better than VHS now (still holding on to my Robocop Criterion anyway.) AT's one I definitely want on blu.

AT has a region free BR box set that came out in Australia. There's also a decent amount of seasons on BR from season 1 on, so it's more like you'd just need the last few seasons on BR to have a complete series or you could import the box set if you don't feel like waiting. It's also available from all the usual streaming places in HD if you want to own it digitally instead.

I'm still holding out hope for a simpsons 4:3 BR someday...disney likes money right?

When I sold my ColecoVision console a bunch of years ago, I included a stack of mail order catalogues and info slips that came through the mail. I hope the new owner appreciates that stuff cos it was all in pristine condition and had to be fairly rare.
