Yeah, I think the trope of the 60's hippie flower power children growing up to be 80's Reaganite yuppies is overblown. There were plenty of people in the same age group who supported Nixon and George Wallace to explain the awful, terrible boomers we have today.

Hippies were like 1% of the population and they didnt change. Dont let Boomer revisionism trick you, the majority of Americans were pro war even up to the very end of the conflict (polling confirms this) and all those songs you hear in Vietnam films got crushed by poo poo like Ballad of the Green Berets which was an unabashedly ultra patriotic garbage and the #1 song of 1966. Those people are the ones who became reaganites in the 80s but invented false wild and free pasts and claim oh everyone just buttoned up and got real jobs.

"See, Lakynn Juinior, back in those days I had to tussle with Antifa every day on the way to work. It was after they made it illegal to run over protestors that were trying to block you from going about your business. Which meant you had to get out of your Fourd Efveefiffy and face them man to man. Now that always put us at a disadvantage, and let me tell you why *vapes* See a lot of young people don't know they called themselves Antifa because it was short for Aunty human being. He was like their termite queen, bloated and sessile. Every full moon they feed him aborted babies from the women the recruited. We used to call each other honkler, so they wouldn't know our names.
So anyway, here I am toe to toe with this Antifa, and let me tell you the bastard was huge. Legs like tree trunks, barrel chested and hair purpler than an eggplant. Had on this dress that would've looked decent on a REAL woman, not some Silverback gorilla in drag. Before he could get me with his meat hooks I kicked him in the kneecap, that's where they moved their balls apparently. Big bastard reels back and up and shits itself like a San Franciscan. So then... Hang on, sonny. LAURA, do they have my booth open yet? The shrimpstress said about 40 minutes and it's been over a goddamn hour!"

But it’s true and my mom says it too but not in a complaining kind of way, but in a “the future is awesome” kind of way.

There’s still lovely people who use it as a justification for being against full legalization, and while I’m not for shipping such people off to work camps in French Guiana, but if it started happening I wouldn’t really say anything or do anything to stop it.

Look at Google maps and you'll see how different both sides are. Niagara, NY is not good. It suffered much of the same fate as Buffalo and while I think its on the mend, all that's there is a shady casino and some outlet malls. the Border Guards will give you poo poo any time you cross because there's so much drug activity.

On the Canadian side, it's like a mini Vegas. In the last 15 years more and more high rise hotels have gone up next to the falls, even a new casino. In fact the old casino was so popular they just kept it so now you have two massive casinos. Clifton Hill is full of wax museums, SA's favorite haunted house, laser tag, etc. There's a really good strip club there. Outside the tourist area the town itself is pretty lovely and run down but it seems like the old hotels are slowly being bought out and bulldozed.

Niagara Falls, NY had a deal with the Seneca tribe where they handed over a bunch of prime land right near the waterfall to the Senecas so they could build a giant hotel and casino, and in return the Senecas were supposed to share the profits - now the Senecas are like "lol what deal" and the city has been on the verge of bankruptcy for the better part of a decade

I've been tryin' to speak with you for a long time
A couple years ago, before Oregon was a legal state, I told my hippie boomer mom that an eigth ounce of decent weed cost between 40 and 50 bucks. She hit the loving roof screaming about inflation and how bad my generation must have it compared to her generation, and how you could get a whole lid for ten dollars when she was young. When I asked her how much a lid was she showed me with her fingers about how much an ounce would be in a plastic bag, and then reminisced about how she went to a Bob Dylan concert with my dad and was pissed at him the whole evening for only bringing two joints.

My parents did become squares more or less when we were kids. They worked steady jobs and paid their taxes found religion, and disapproved of drugs and premarital sex (or at least acted like it until we were out of college). But they also took me to peace protests during the Gulf War and vote democratic and their square jobs were in public service and they recycle. Boomers aren't all bad.

In a rec market you're looking at a half for that. ~$80-100 for an ounce. Illegality lead to inflation, and as a boomer, that's your mother's fault.

There's a whole bunch of crazy poo poo that went down along with the land transfer. In addition to the old Convention Center that got turned into the casino, the city acquired surrounding properties in the neighborhood with eminent domain. This included a water park, and some residential houses. Well, one lady refused to sell her house. So every night she would wake up with two mob guys in her bedroom saying "SO ARE YOU GONNA SELL YET?". Police wouldn't do anything, and they only stopped harassing her when the media got involved.

tldr: city threatened to kill olds so they could bulldoze their homes and make money, money never materialized

Just like Mama used to make it!
My mom is 72, had a pretty bad childhood which lead to a lovely marriage. She's battled depression for years and is finally getting better. One thing she likes is church. Not a huge mega building but a small congregation. She isn't highly religious and she mainly does it to be social.

She was telling me that there are one or two lesbian couples that have been attending and while it hasn't caused a huge issue, there are members who are still don't know it's almost 2020. Seems most members are fine with this but they don't want them in any type of leadership position. You know, because they may spread "The Gay". In fact, the church lost some accreditation with another group because they allowed lesbians to attend service.

So my Mom and telling me things and I'm like, "why the hell are you still going there?" and she's like, "Well I like the social aspect". So I ask her to replace the word "lesbian" with "woman" or "black" or "asian" and see how is sounded if they said, "No woman can be in a leadership role".

She doesn't go to church anymore. I think she's looking for a more modern congregation but, yeah. This is the world we live in.
