I normally kind-of agree, except the special features on the Freaked blu-ray rule. The commentary is one of the funniest commentaries I've ever heard, up there with Cannibal! The Musical. Also the behind-the-scenes stuff which is pretty cool to have for a movie that bombed as hard as Freaked did. It's a miracle that footage even exists. Iron Crowned posted:Vinegar Syndrome sent me their catalog last year, and it's less of a catalog and more of a 70's and 80's porn actor reference guide, with a horror section in the front. Well yeah, up until recently Vinegar Syndrome was like 75% porn movies. But they're getting way better.

Firefighters definitely shouldn't get salty about it though because Backdraft was a great recruitment tool along the lines of Top Gun. Who wouldn't want to be Kurt Russell?

The other thing I remember is that the score was used as the theme song for the original Japanese Iron Chef.

It's so funny/sad how the movies that are projected to make the most money will come out in 2K just because they can't wait for full res effects rendering.

*sigh* Ritrovata strikes again with yet another green film with lovely black levels: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews21/the_nun_blu-ray.htm Either the person doing the colour grading is half blind or s/he's working on a monitor that's completely out of whack. It's utterly bizarre. And it's such a shame because it ruins their otherwise fine restoration work.

So my friend and I are gonna go halves on a one year license on a program to dump dvds/blurays. He used the trial to test out a bluray. It took 4 hours. Not surprising, given how slow bluray drives are. I then wondered, if someone were to dump 1 disc at a time, immediately after the other, never stopping for the entire year, how many blurays could be dumped. There are 8760 hours in a year, so at a rate of 1 per every four hours, a total of 2190 bluray movies can be dumped. Fess up, who can do that? I've seen some of your collections.

My collection is big enough that it's by far the most of anyone I know, and it's still only like 250-300 or so.

How many people here do use binders as opposed to disc cases? Me, I am all about the binders. Right now I have four large binders of DVDs, and I wound up dividing my Blurays into cases for anime, not-anime, and a small one for the MCU (largely because it was easier to keep them in order that way).

Yeah if you want to retain the exact quality of the disc, and possibly retain extras/soundtracks as necessary and you have a lot of HDD storage - MakeMKV is going to be a lot, lot faster. Blu-ray remuxes of just the movies with native soundtracks can swing from around 16-40gb or so per movie in most cases if you want to get a grasp. If you want to reduce the size, that's when you use an extra tool and that's where the time consumption comes in, but Handbrake definitely does a perfectly good job of this. You can then spend time you're at the computer batching the discs through MakeMKV to get the physical data, then batch them through Handbrake while you sleep to do the encodes.

It's probably because that drive is USB2, which is too slow to be doing this sort of thing. You'll see better times if you get a USB3 drive.

Do people have any specific recommendations beyond makeMKV? After a move I have consolidated all my dvds into plastic sleeves and some shoebox-sized boxes, with an eventual next step of ripping everything and getting a RAID setup for Plex. I want to keep commentary tracks but don’t really care about anything else. Is MakeMKV a good standard for that?

I didn't realize how small 4+ TB drives have gotten. I went into Best Buy the other day looking for a harddrive and bought a 4TB for around a hundred bucks. I really need to start ripping my dvd collection (1500+), every day I get mildly paranoid about discs rotting or getting scratched up and unplayable.

One of the few benefits to living in dry rear end Phoenix is the lack of disc rot. My friend left discs he burned in middle school in his truck for so many years and they worked no problem til he eventually changed it out for a new deck with an auxiliary port.
