If someone told me back in October that the Celtics would have the most embarrassing season ever and the Bruins would be up 5-2 in game one of the Eastern Conference Finals... I mean, my goodness. I love this team.

But seriously... why did the Canes pull the goalie with like 3 minutes left? Are they really that certain that the can't do poo poo at even strength away from home?

Serisothikos posted:an approximately 28-second period in game 6 of the 2013 SCF Ugh. The power had gone out in my neighborhood so I tromped down to a bar on Dot ave to watch the game... and they gave up the tying goal so I thought "well, there's still game 7" and by the time I was done thinking that to myself they'd lost the series. Spring Break My Heart posted:you should always do it earlier Are there metrics on this? Seems like a mighty big risk to go down two but I can see it maybe being worthwhile if playing with 6 men is enough of an advantage and doing nothing is likely to lose anyways.

Tuukka started off with 5 seasons of goaltending as good as (edit: almost, holy poo poo Roy and Hasek) anyone has ever been (.928 save%, 2.11 gaa) and since then has been merely good/very good (.917 save%, 2.38 gaa). And he got a really big contract, so of course people start complaining when he's not quite the second coming of Hasek. habeasdorkus fucked around with this message at 03:59 on May 10, 2019 |

A different study I read maybe four or five years ago suggested a team could gain a non-trivial amount of points (I want to say it was like 8.5, which can be the difference between playoffs or golf course) over the course of a season by pulling the goalie much earlier, though I don't have it on hand.

Thanks! Gonna see if anything from the Sloane conference has covered this. I bet there's all sorts of wrinkles depending on where faceoffs are, how quick you can get a goalie out of the net (or back into it) etc.
