like the rest of the market, it's just mostly computers trading with each other, it just happens outside the confines of The Close. mostly what you have is institutional investors making markets and liquidating positions outside of the normal trading hours where they'll get matched up with another institutional investor. like a chinese investment bank is still going to have TSLA shares to manage and they're not staying up to the middle of the night to shave off a couple hundred thousand shares

so what's the downside to the after hours trading?

is there extra fees? is it that you're missing out on more potential people to match your request? is it limited to narrower selection of actors allowed to trade?

does the next day really start at the number that is reached during after hours trading?

there's no extra fees usually, but liquidity is usually pretty poo poo. right now the spread (difference between bid and ask) on TSLA is 0.70 at 1x1, so if you wanted to unload 1000 shares, you might get filled at 20 cents below the bid. during the normal day session, you're probably going to see that spread be no more than 0.10, and each side will have thousands of shares available to fill (instead of 1x1 which is 100 shares on each side).

so there's two different things - after hours (after market close) and pre market (before market open)

it affects the price as much as any other trade - if there are people at the open that want to buy and sell at a certain price, it will go to that price

the only difference here is the timings - if you ask your broker to deal after hours, you get a special permission and can trade in that time

at least that's my understanding of all this. here's an investopedia article on it

https://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/after-hours-trading-am-i-able-to-trade-at-this-time/

the reason you usually see institutional trades happen during these hours is they're pre-arranged, not submitted through the normal order matching systems any of us can access. if someone has a sizable position they want to sell, they can find a buyer in a dark pool and the trade hits the tape after it executes, but you never see 2 million shares cross the bid or offer.

Nobody wants tesla, it's in a debt fueled death spiral.

VW is probably gonna swoop in for the assets in the middle of the bankruptcy proceedings leaving the bag holders with an empty bag.

the spiral aspect of the debt is not a big issue for a buyer with deep pockets (which is required), as they'd have a pretty easy time cutting some deals to restructure the debt as part of the buyout (bonds are trading at a large discount atm, so it'd probably be quite easy to buy it back on the cheap). while autopilot is a bit of a shambles i do think the right buyer would find some value there (e.g. the tensor chips aren't very special, but it is a nontrivial product), and there'll be some pieces of the patent portfolio that works for them. really it is just a bit hard to figure out who could afford to buy them out even at $100. apple did flirt with it at a way higher cost, but that seems boneheaded enough (as apple has no need for the brand, which remains a large part of the value, and on the flipside they absolutely do not want to make apple the brand whose products sometimes chop your head off) that they have surely changed their tune since.

still, if dropping below $100 at least some consortium of idiots will pop up for sure.

After Sullins personally delivered a brand new couch to Tesla’s Fremont factory, Musk tweeted his gratitude – though it appears he still isn’t making much use of the gift.

The billionaire now sleeps on the floor under his desk, the Wall Street Journal reports. Writers Tim Higgins and Susan Pulliam note Musk keeps a pillow on a nearby chair so that he can stay close, around the clock, to the two general assembly lines building the Model 3 sedan.

Musk couldn't even be bothered to update his personal fictionalized working life to account for the reality-existing couch.

quote:

Sullins didn’t get to meet Musk, but he was still surprised and pleased to get a shout-out from him over Twitter. “I consider him to live on a different planet so the fact that he responded was pretty special.”

Senpai tweeted in my general direction.

Pretty sure I'm going to get stopped out of my leveraged position today for a big loss. Still have 40 actual shares which I will hold on to but man, this last month has been relentless. Relentless selling and relentless negative press. Thankfully Tesla is not all of my portfolio but I feel very sorry for those people who went in big.

If things are genuinely are going better than the current share price suggests then I believe Tesla owe it to shareholders to at least make an attempt to stop this bloodbath. I've even seen on other EV message boards people holding off on purchasing a Model 3 because they are worried about the financial health of Tesla because they see all the negative press. A self fulfilling prophecy is not what we need right now.
