Used to be time was, I thought Severin was the superior boutique exploitation label. VS was just "those guys who have a bunch of porn and also Christmas Evil". Now I've flip-flopped and love Vinegar Syndrome, their releases for the past several months have been on-point.

Bought: Blood Harvest, Nightmare Sisters, Liquid Sky, and then later added Storefront Theatre: All Night at the Bizarre Art because I'm a sucker for really weird old porn.

e: vv Unfortunately, yes. I bought it sight-unseen and then it came on The Last Drive-In last night and sucked on toast. But oh well, no regrets! Okay, some regrets

I think my bluray shelf is equally taken up by Vinegar Syndrome, Severin, Arrow, Shout, Kino Lorber, and Criterion.

To be fair, most people who still buy physical copies of movies and especially blu-rays are the kind of nerds who like this stuff.

In my quest to crack $100 on the Vinegar Syndrome sale, I can safely say that after this year's Black Friday sale, I will likely have all of their in print non-porn back catalog :psyduck:

I'm getting a box with 16 discs in it :psypop:

I guess now I should focus my attention on the other boutique labels now.

I will love VS forever due to Christmas Evil and Night Train to Terror, but I’ve also gotten more stinkers from them than any other label. Still salty about Deadly Daphne’s Revenge, christ what a piece of poo poo. Severin is probably my favorite right now. I’ve also gotten some really cool stuff from Mondo Macabro

Speaking of high def porn, I wish KIDS could get a BD release. I’m not looking for a ton, just a faithful picture w a 2K scan.

One thing that came to mind recently: death of extras on home releases. I picked up the UHD release of the first X-men trilogy because I really enjoy the first two movies and the price was right. But I’m not ready to ditch my BD copies because there’s extra discs w special features, etc. however, I don’t really watch them. It’s wishful thinking. New movies don’t really do that kind of stuff these days. Just a couple quick surface-level extras that are a few minutes long.

I assume it’s for any number of reasons. Easier to package for digital releases. No one really watched them in the first place. No one watches them now because there’s literally unlimited media to watch if you have any 3 subscriptions.

I think I’ll try to go through those extras sometime soon and then give away the BDs and save the space.

EDIT: to clarify this is about mainstream releases. Not your Criterion’s, etc.

There's Japanese and German releases. The former won't require an all-region blu-ray player, but the latter is somewhat cheaper. Also, why in God's name would you want to own that movie?

It's a solid film with some stellar performances and features two late greats from the skater scene who passed away before their prime.

My classmate from High School (pop punk rocker chick, like a grimy hot topic employee/theatre kid) was super over the moon for this really plain, kind of nerdy dude in our grade. One day she's in near tears and we're like wtf happened to you.

She goes "I had a long conversation with [Guy] and then he said his favorite movie is KIDS and I DON'T KNOW ABOUT HIM WHAT KIND OF PERSON LIKES *THAT* MOVIE?!"

To be honest, I'm pretty shocked that two high school students would even know what that movie is. One knew it well enough to make it his favorite, and one knew it well enough to know that it's hosed up to call it someone's favorite movie.

'95-'99 here, and same here. Then again I also ran with the punks, so that probably helped. There is exactly one reason to own a movie like Kids, and that's to watch it once, then pass it around to all your friends.

That said I haven't seen Kids in over 20 years, so I wouldn't mind revisiting it.

I think it was a Gen X thing exclusively. I was a film nerd in high school in 2001-2005 and never heard anyone mention Kids. IIRC I'd heard of it but I had no particular interest in seeing it, and I seriously doubt it was on anyone else's radar.

e: Though maybe it's because we were in small town Iowa so it wasn't as relevant to us as it would be city kids?

Yeah that movie was a thing to sit through once, and I'm glad I'm not alone in hating it. I think the only thing that makes it even watchable is Harmony Korine's script. But man is it creepy and bleak.

That I never, ever want to see again because it just breaks me in a way I never thought I could be broken. It's so unyeilding that it has shaped my soul.

It digs to the depths of human misery, pettiness and strikes at our notion that there is justice and kindness in the world.

And then you feel additionally lovely because the protagonists of the story are supporting an imperialist machine
