First night of Slackfest was great as well. Sorry to see The Fad go (for now), but Slackers just put on a solid show no matter the time or place.

Had to be the best show I've seen in a while. No poo poo heads trying to start fights or mosh. Small intimate venue. All three bands had keyboard. Haven't seen Westbound Train in over a decade. And I feel like bands give that extra 5% when playing in their home town vs whatever city they happen to be in on a given night while touring.

We'll definitely be back next year.

I don't think I've seen The Slackers at a venue that isn't a boat or a bar, and it just feels right that way. Doing three nights of small shows keeps things pretty intense.

It's this the reason the most recent 5 articles on the hard times are about ska? They're actually pretty good too.

I don't think this has been posted yet, The Beat's Ranking Roger died recently. I attended one of his last shows.

This sucks, all my punk and two tone heroes from the 70's and 80's are starting to die

I went up on stage with Goldfinger when they played Mable when I was like 18. I didn't eat the twinkie out of Darren's rear end though

One time I lost my wallet in a circle pit during San Simeon. Then about 45 minutes later I sprained my ankle skanking to Johnny Quest Thinks We're Sellouts. Not a great night.

The Slackers played a free show in Dayton, Ohio last night in a city park (show was OK - they had to keep the set list family/child friendly) and afterwards Vic & Disco Dave played an hour-long set at an afterparty they held to benefit victims of a string of recent tornadoes in the area.

I just saw Mephiskapheles on Tuesday and they were really good! Nice fun show.
I think I have to be in Boston Oct 12th, and I'm kind of tempted to see if I could divert to NY the night before, because I need more Mustard Plug in my life.

I was at Jacob Riis Beach in Queens (NY) yesterday and there happened to be a ska band called Beat Brigade playing the entire day. I've never heard of them before but they were pretty good. That's my ska story for the year I guess.

I stumbled across this (ska-adjacent) album a few weeks ago - The Sound of '69.

Self-published collection of covers of popular songs from 1969, covered in the style of skinhead reggae by Jayson Nugent of the Slackers with several other collaborators - something of a who's who of second/third wave east coast ska: Robert Higley (The Toasters), King Django, Mike Drance (The Scofflaws), Todd Hembrook (Deal's Gone Bad), Stephen Jackson (The Pietasters), plus Slackers regulars Vic Ruggerio, Glen Pine and Dave Hillyard and a few others for whom this album is their only credited work.

Definitely worth the $7 at the above link if you're a cover song/album fan.

Nothing much is coming out, so I'm going to highlight a little-known album I really enjoy by a band no one knows about. That album is Fire Pit by Spider Nick and the Maddogs. They are a ska band, mostly, from Long Island, but they play a lot of covers and have a lot of calypso influence. Here are some tracks I like from this album:

Uncle Al
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uaUYRuuwZNc

Midnight Special
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rU_TYQ0evU

The Pool
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLMy58aZAa8

Angelina
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVGbIQWr_fE

The horn arrangements leave something to be desired, but other than that I have gotten a lot of joy out of this album. It's available on Amazon and probably other places.
