Hello Fatty!

Fun Shoe
Welcome everyone to the Artdome! A nice casual place for classy people to test their artistic mettle and hone their skills in a safe, relaxed environment.

What's that? “Thunderdome”? Never heard of it. This is not at all like that thing you made up which doesn't exist.

:siren:

Mod edit:

The existing rules are mostly accurate, but the thread community made a few changes at the end of 2021:

1) Rounds end on the 1st and 15th of the month, meaning there will be two prompts per month.
2) The judge may declare the winner before their crits are ready
3) Participants can decline critique, or may preemptively disqualify themselves from winning if they don't think they can judge
4) Participants should clearly indicate their final submission, as opposed to a WiP
5) Other forms of art are welcome! Per the judge's preference, of course.
6) If you are open to judging, have a prompt in mind when you submit!

:siren:

How to play:

  1. The winner of the previous round is the judge.

  2. The judge picks a drawing prompt. This can be pretty much whatever the judge would like. This prompt will include a deadline to declare participation and a deadline for final artwork submission.

  3. Participants declare that they want to participate by posting “I shall participate, good sir and/or madame!” by the participation deadline. People can also volunteer to be one of two backup judges at this time.

  4. Participants submit a piece of visual art by the submission deadline (usually two weeks after the participation deadline). Their submissions can be whatever they'd like as long as it meets the requirements of the prompt and doesn't break the rules below. Ink? Crayons? Paint? Pixels? A comic? A 50-foot wall mural? It's all good, baby!

  5. The judges will now have up to a week after the submission deadline to review your work, provide critiques to the participants, and pick a winner. Honorable Mentions may also be handed out as the judges see fit. THE MAIN JUDGE'S CHOICE OF WINNER IS FINAL!

  6. The winner is now the judge and creates a new prompt within 24 hours.

Side note: Yes you read that right. There are no loser titles or dishonorable mentions given in this contest. This is to make things a little more laid back and newbie friendly. It's not about punishing failure, it's about rewarding novelty and encouraging experimentation. Be aware though that critiques will still be as frank and honest as you'd expect from CC. This means that if your work sucks you will be told exactly how and why you need to "git gud" in no uncertain terms. This is not done to punish you for failing but to help guide you on the path to making something better. We love you, please don't be mad.

That said, If you guys get annoyed with the current format and decide you want loser avs/DMs/etc let me know. I'm not married to any specific format at this point.

The Rules:

  1. The art you post must be your own. Stealing other people's work is a real dick move and may result in mod action and/or me PMing swears at you.

  2. The art you post must be made for the purpose of this contest. If you want a critique of something you've already made consider either making a new thread or posting it in the Daily Drawings & Doodles thread along with a request for a critique.

  3. Ghosting on a submission or a critique by the deadline will make people angry. If you have trouble with this consider :toxx:ing yourself for added motivation.

  4. Don't include explanations or excuses with your work beyond the basics like “This is ink and gauche on Bristol board”. Posting how much you think your work sucks is annoying and won't help you get a kinder critique. Besides, even if you do suck you're still far better than all the people too cowardly to participate in the first place and we respect that.

  5. Do not argue with the judges about their critique of your work. You can ask for clarity if you'd like but generally the best practice is to just thank them for their time and effort and move on.

  6. Critiques should be frank and honest but also polite and constructive. You should never use a critique as an excuse to personally attack someone.

  7. Do NOT edit your work after submitting it! Once you post your submission you're done so make sure you fix any issues with your work before taking it public. We ignore this one all the time so I'm updating this rule to: Do NOT edit your work after the submission deadline. Also if you do make any changes let us know so the judge critiques the right version of your work.

  8. No fanart please. We're here to challenge ourselves and that means working with our own unique creations. Plus I don't want somebody to win just because the judge is really into Goku that week. Note: This rule may be lifted at a judge's discretion but I don't recommend it.

  9. Tasteful nudes are allowed behind the appropriate :nws: tags but straight-up pornography is not. Yes, we can tell the difference.

  10. No erotic material and/or weird fetish BS. This is not me judging you, your sexuality, or your subculture. I simply find my own sexual urges terrifying and am not ready to confront them at this time. TIA for your understanding.

  11. All other forum rules still apply.

(This will probably be expanded later as people demonstrate why we can't have nice things. If you have any suggestions or think I missed anything let me know.)

Hello Fatty!

Fun Shoe
FAQ:

What do I get if I win?

You get a spiffy gang tag!

Does something happen if I lose?

You don't get a spiffy gang tag.

The judge picked that lovely drawing just because it had a cat in it!

Most judges highly value technical skill but at the end of the day they are allowed to use whatever tortured logic they feel is appropriate when picking a winner. This will occasionally mean the winner is the piece the judge enjoyed the most rather than the one with the most detail or the best anatomy. Consider submitting something involving a cat the next time that person is a judge.

How do I get my art into the computer?

Scanning is usually your best bet but well-lit photographs can also be acceptable for things like paintings. Be sure to clean up your work with something like Photoshop before submitting it!

What do I do if I can't afford Photoshop?

haha check out this loser who doesn't know how to steal Photoshooooerrr what I mean to say is you should probably use Gimp (https://www.gimp.org/downloads) instead. It's free and works pretty well!

Seriously though, gently caress Adobe and it's subscription-based bullshit. I will literally never stop using CS5 you assholes! :argh:

How do I post my picture?

Upload your file to something like imgur (https://imgur.com/) and post the link they provide. Do not under any circumstances put quote tags around your submission.

Do I still own my work?

Yes, your art is yours and you are free to do whatever you want with it after the contest is over. We reserve the right to save/archive a copy of it for posterity though.

Are we only allowed to talk about the contest?

You can talk about whatever you'd like but ONLY if you've participated in at least one contest (again, general forum rules apply).

Is smack-talk allowed?

Hell yes. Just be prepared to back up your words with your art.

Can I challenge somebody to a one-on-one duel?

Sure, why not. They don't necessarily have to accept your challenge though.

Hello Fatty!

Fun Shoe
Since I made the thread that means I get to be the first judge. As such today's prompt will be...

:siren:Prompt 1: Create our gang tag:siren:

That's right, Your first prompt is to create the gang tag that will be handed out to contest winners. I'm really not going to set a whole lot of limitations on this other than to encourage everyone to have fun. The winner will be determined by cleverness and general graphic design skills.

  • Participation Deadline: Monday May 27th by midnight This one's special so you don't have to declare by this date to submit

  • Deadline to volunteer as a backup judge: Monday May 27th by midnight

  • Artwork Submission Deadline: Monday June 10th by Midnight

Special rules: The dimensions of your submissions must be between 145-180px wide and no higher than 60px tall (mods, let me know if these dimensions should be tweaked).

Current judges: Me, Sebmojo, Keetron

Just a friendly reminder that the deadline to submit is Monday night at midnight. For this round you do NOT need to have declared participation to enter.

Also, if anyone knows of any non-CC threads that would have people interested in participating let me know so I can be an obnoxious rear end in a top hat and nag them to come over (with mod permission of course).

Fun Shoe
The submission deadline is :siren:Tonight at Midnight PST:siren: (roughly four hours from now) so please post your submissions by then. After that me and the judges will have until Sunday night at midnight to finish our crits. I'll probably announce a winner Tuesday night so be prepared to post a new prompt shortly after that (I believe within 24 hours is the norm).

For the next prompt I want to see if I can get more people to participate so I humbly request that the winner keep any materials requirements for their prompt to things people likely already have (pens, pencils, free software etc). After that though I'm going to let go of the reigns and let people do pretty much whatever the hell they want.

Thanks again to everyone who participated! I look forward to murdering each and every one of you in honorable artistic combat next round.

Looks like we only had two submissions but fortunately they were both pretty good!

The Winner: Congratulations to Al! for making a fun, well executed concept that I absolutely loved.

Honorable Mention: I'd also like to extent congratulations to Lofi. I'm 100% serious when I say you'd have gotten one of these even if there were a bunch more submissions. Great work!

I guess that's it for Round 1. The actual critiques will be coming along shortly. Best of luck to you in Round 2 Al! I eagerly await the opportunity to crush my enemies for your amusement.

Thanks again everyone!

hell yeah!!!!!! i really think lofi's was excellent and a way cleaner design than mine, and i also think people might have been intimidated by the technical restrictions of the prompt (and animation is a very niche thing to do). i plan on making my prompt very specific but very open to interpretation

if im getting that gangtag, i just ask that you preserve smallbarf :rip: john candy. it might also be a good idea to make it link to this thread, as i plan on repping the hell out of it in cspam.

i already know exactly what im doing for a prompt but i wanna put a little work into it so it'll be coming later this evening or tomorrow

:siren: Prompt 2: Vanitas :siren:

webster's dictionary defines a Vanitas as "a sweet painting of a cool skull with maybe some fruit or flowers and poo poo" You're probably most familiar with this genre of work cuz it was very popular with the goddamned dutch

morte sighed as he unsheathed his katana

et cetera.

But we want to be more general here so we will go with the wikipedia blurb: "A vanitas is a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, often contrasting symbols of wealth and symbols of ephemerality and death."

so i'm not expecting a dutch master still life, anything that meets the above definition will work for me. as such, i'm leaving the format totally up to you: painting, sculpture, photography, performance (one of my favorite contemporary artists is paul mccarthy hint hint) etc.

deadlines:

  • JUNE 19: Deadline to announce your interest to compete in this contest. I'll also make this the deadline to volunteer as a backup judge
  • JUNE 26: Deadline to submit your art

Critique time!

OK, so this was kind of a weird one and animation isn't my forte but I'll do my best.

Al!:

This is a very solid piece with an impressive amount of detail for being so small. Perhaps a bit too much detail, in fact. It's not that the piece itself is flawed but when shrunk down so small the individual parts get a little lost in all the flashy moving bits.

I remember when I first looked at your entry I had to concentrate for a moment to figure out what the two figures were and what they were doing. Looking at it again I think that's because they're right in front of the Artdome sign which, while a good element, is also very busy and draws the eye like a super magnet. I think a combination of making the foreground fighter a just tad bigger and toning down the sign a smidge would help the piece's readability.

It's still a great piece though and I'm super stoked we get to use it to represent the thread.

lofi:

Your piece is a bit simpler than A1!'s but it's also clearer and more striking at a glance which matters an awful lot in images this small. Overall though I think it would have done an excellent job representing the dome.

...With a handful of minor tweaks. Hear me out.

First off I think the dome itself could stand to be stretched out horizontally by about five percent and the bars made just a hair thinner. This would give the corners of the “D” and “E” a bit of room to breathe which would aid in the “DOME”'s readability. Second, the red you chose for the blood is just a shade or two too dark and causes those parts of the word to recede too much into the background. This combines with the previous issue of the letters being just a bit too close to the edges of the dome and makes them hard to identify at a glance.

Finally, I think you could have done a bit more with the empty space in background. Maybe some spotlights or something? Just enough to add a little texture to that space. It's not awful but the solid black feels underutilized to me.

But that's kind of it. Again, it's a good piece and I'm glad you entered it. I look forward to seeing your future submissions.

Pshew! OK time to actually DO some art instead of just writing about it. Good luck everyone!

Just wanted to chime in to recommend this plastic skull I got for anyone looking for a good model to reference. It's about the size of your fist but has a decent amount of detail including all the bits behind the cranium and behind the jaw which is useful for odd angles. It's probably overkill for this project but it will be useful for practice later so whatever.
