I downloaded and watched six matches at totally random last night and I'm hooked now. The first one I watched was Kawada vs Taue from Jan 1, 1991 and I was blown away. I guess I really havent watched much of that style or that era outside of a couple Kobashi matches
That Kawada/Taue match owns so much. Their match from Champions Carnival 1995 also owns, but due to the development of the style it's very different. All Japan from the mid '80s through the early '90s had lots of good, hate-fueled feuds. In the mid '90s that shifted to rivalries and a cleaner but still very violent style.

Eh, I’d put this down more to a change in their personal dynamics rather than the company’s style changing as a whole. In 1991, Kawada was a mega babyface in the Super Generation Army alongside Misawa and Kobashi, whereas Taue was an opportunistic heel and betrayed the three of them to join Tsuruta-gun alongside Fuchi, Yatsu and Jumbo. It makes perfect sense that they wanted to kill each other in their 1991 CC match, because the Four Pillars were supposed to be standard-bearers of the new generation, but Taue had thrown his lot in with the old fuckers, and that really didn’t sit right with Kawada at the time.

By 1995, Kawada had turned heel and formed the Holy Demon Army with Taue. He wasn’t about to kill his tag team partner for the sake of two points in the Champion Carnival, and vice versa. Of course, they weren’t going to pull their punches, but they weren’t going to break their trust in each other. That’s why the rematch isn’t quite as dirty.

They were still as violent and dirty as ever with their opponents though. Take the Misawa/Kobashi vs. Kawada/Taue match on 6/9 (nice) that year. When Kobashi fucks up his knee on that dive, iirc Kawada immediately comes in and kicks the gently caress out of it. That eventually leads to Kawada and Taue kicking the poo poo out of Misawa on the floor, until Kobashi shields Misawa with his body and the Holy Demon Army keeps on kicking the poo poo out of them. That’s dirty as gently caress imo. There was still a lot of hate in AJ during the 90s from my perspective.

e: vv Oh, totally agree with you on that! vv

I guess I'm thinking in terms of going for blood, brawling, etc. Plenty of hate and cheap tactics in the middle of the decade but it was more technical in execution. Of course that depends on if one considers Taue pie-facing Misawa into Kobashi's leg "technical", which I would, in addition to being dirty AF.

It's both touching that there was plan for such a worse-case scenario and chilling that Misawa thought that dying in ring was more than a remote possibility at that point in his career

He probably knew it was likely to happen, it’s not like he didn’t go to doctor. He probably had severe spinal stenosis but just cleared himself to wrestle anyway.

He worked in a dangerous business and I remember reading at one point that he knew he shouldn't still be wrestling, but when Kobashi had to retire they lacked draws after a few failed attempts at making stars, and Misawa was pretty beloved.

The whole story of Baba Dies>AJPW falls apart>NOAH starts>NOAH falls apart after a prosperous start because of Kobashi's body breaking down and Misawa dying is pretty sad.

I like this guys spreadsheet of Joshi matches - it’s as comprehensive as you can get without including DVD matches that no one can see and for the top matches gives an explanation about why they’re on it.

Wikipedia posted:

On June 17, 2007, after a match which saw Yinling and TAJIRI lose to Muta the Great and RG, Muta held Yinling down and spat his green mist into her vagina. The green mist apparently contained Muta's sperm and caused Yinling to become pregnant. Yinling would give birth to an egg in the middle of the ring and eventually the egg hatched into 514-pound wrestler Monster Bono. [...] due to her continuous abuse, Bono eventually turned on her, which led to challenging her in the ring. The match between mother and son took place on May 24, 2008, in which Yinling fought valiantly but Bono came out as the victor. Tragically, Bono's finishing big splash accidentally killed Yinling. As she died, he held her in his arms and the two were reconciled

The best part about HUSTLE (Scott Norton backs me up on this having experienced it up-close) is how INSANELY entertaining Takada's heel promos were even if you don't know Japanese. Absolutely untouchable charisma.

Ditch‘s stuff is great.

Does anyone have resources for ‘19 NOAH? Cagematch seems to follow Big Japan and All Japan (at least for Champions Carnival) pretty close. I think with the Dragon Gate and joshi resources above, that should cover most of it.
