on the one hand this creates a lot of space to work with a narrative of modern government corruption and small-town desperation

I've never sat through Nothing But Trouble all the way so all I really know was Dan Ackroyd doing multiple roles and a judge with a penis nose.

But I was thinking along the lines of small town desperation with the mainstay taken away, they have nothing to replace it, can't afford to move elsewhere and feeling betrayed by the various officials and government to where they literally go for the 'eat the rich' idea.

Not to bring back Zombie chat but I haven’t seen his Halloweens..do I really need to watch his first one or can I just skip to 2?

Also 1000 Corpses is awesome and oddly genuine. Super rough around the edges but it’s a campy as gently caress spookhouse midnight movie if that’s your thing. Devils Rejects is really, really good but I’d rather watch Dwight get turned into a mermaid again instead

There's some context that helps, but it mostly works as a stand-alone film. Most of it is stuff that exists in the original Halloween, so it's not too big of a leap.

If you want to watch Halloween 2 without 1, here's what you need to know:

-Sheri Moon Zombie plays Michael Meyers's mother. She was a stripper, and their family life sucked. Michael is put into a mental institution for killing everyone in his family except his mother (and infant sister). She visits him out of guilt, and died while he was in custody.
-Michael is aware that he has a baby sister--Laurie Strode--and seemed to be trying to find her in Halloween 1. Laurie does not know she is related to him.
-Michael attacked Laurie and her friends (just like in the original Halloween), but Annie--played by Danielle Harris--survived.
-Brad Dourif plays the sheriff, who is Annie's father
-Dr. Loomis was a bad psychiatrist and fraud, but loved the publicity the Meyers's case gave him.
-Michael Meyers seemed to have been shot to death at the end of Halloween 1

I think that's everything you'd need to know? Someone else can provide more context if necessary.

Honestly, I'm not a huge fan of RZ's Halloween 1, but it's such a polarizing film that you should give it a shot and see if you're one of the persons that love it. Halloween 2 is still better, either way.

Zombie's Halloween is good, it just doesn't end up looking as good when you compare it to his Halloween 2, which is a near-masterpiece. I did a Letterboxd list of 21st century horror and I have Halloween 2 as #5(and might move it up a few slots if I re-examined the rankings).

Edit: Upon further review, no, it stays at #5. I can't elevate it above It Follows, The Eyes of My Mother, Lords of Salem, or Trick R Treat. Lords of Salem is still Zombie's best film and I'm starting to think he might never top it.

If you can get really high, way drunk and start to squint hard, Lords of Salem is like a satanic homage to the Shining and Rosemary's Baby.

I had fun when I first saw it, near Halloween and in a spooky sort of mood, though I cannot recommend watching it sober.

I find it to be a very emotional film(much like Halloween 2), there's a weight to it that is palpable. A lot of that is Zombie's use of addiction as a theme and tying that to the dread that comes along with being stalked by a coven of witches, but there's a sadness in the second half that is just very very oppressive(in a good way).

It's a fantastic performance by Sherri Moon, and also by Jeff Daniel Phillips. The plot is pretty straightforward but at the same time it's easy to pick up little details on rewatch that you missed the first time, which is something I always enjoy in a horror movie.

Aside from all that it's Zombie's best work just on a visual level. The imagery he's got going on in there for me is way above anything else he's done.

:spooky: Sheri Moon gives a great performance.
:spooky: It has an awesome autumnal & Halloween aesthetic.
:spooky: It has all of the aspects that make Rob Zombie’s films appealing but holds back on (most) of his more bizarre indulgences.
:spooky: There are interesting themes of sins of previous generations that must be atoned for, with Heidi’s recovery from addiction and Salem’s rich history of violence and bigotry
:spooky: It’s a great witch movie that came out when that was still an unexplored subgenre for horror.
:spooky: The cinematography rules
:spooky: The premise is fun
:spooky: It’s legit creepy and spooky and melancholic.

Yeah, El Superbeasto is just unfunny juvenile humor. It’s like a spookyish version of Drawn Together.

Lords of Salem is the first RZ I didn’t hate outright and I’m at a loss for a great way to put why into words other than it’s his least try-hard movie. It feels like a complete story and not yet another deep dive into redneck serial killers.

I enjoyed 31 just fine but I couldn't help but be disappointed with it just because of how hyped I was after Lords of Salem that were were entering like a new Golden Age of Zombie films but it never happened. I guess he just has a real hell of a time getting poo poo financed, which is a loving travesty.

Hey, I'm a southerner and routinely eat chili with beans and no meat. (meat+beans is the pro combo though)

No beans is specifically a Texas chili rule, not southern. Personally, I think some beans are fine but not too much. The true scary chili is the ungodly midwest concoctions that have cinnamon and pasta in it.

edit: Hard peppercorns (human teeth) are of course acceptable

Cincinnati chili is horrifyingly disgusting. It tastes like ketchup or something and the cheap cheese they load on top is tasteless. And I live in Detroit with watered down coney dog chili all over the place and it's still way better than that Ohio garbage.

Overcooked noodles are probably the only thing I will straight up throw away regardless of how much I paid for it. For this reason I love some Thai food, but those big mushy noodles make me want to puke.

For Content: Fried Green Tomatoes isn't horror but drat is it a good movie featuring cooking someone into food.

I'm technically Southern and I've never known a person to make a beanless chili. Hell, I know more people that make meatless chili these days.
