Ask for movie recommendations here!

Guidelines For Those Asking For Suggestions:

:coffee: Try to be clear about what you're looking for. If it's something specific, say so. If it's a vague direction, say so.
:coffee: List movies/books/comics/video games/tv shows or anything else that is relevant to what you're looking for.
:coffee: If you're looking for results on a specific streaming service, specify what services you have available.
:coffee: If you think a recommendation is inappropriate for the request, try to explain your thoughts constructively and without insult. This is not a thread to dunk on other movies or posters.

Guidelines For Those Recommending Films:
:coffee: Explain why you think people might like the film -- don't just throw out a title and say "it's awesome", explain why ("I liked the parts with the Michael Shannon's rear end", "A dude gets decapitated with a blow torch")
:coffee: Try to recommend something specific. "You'd probably like every Harmony Korine film" is fine, if it's appropriate and you give enough reason.
:coffee: If you're responding to someone's request by recommend something they didn't ask for, make sure you say why the person asking for a rom-com might enjoy what appears to be a murder-mystery on the surface.
:coffee: If your recommendation is lengthy, try to do a tl;dr sentence or two at the end.

Of course all CineD rules and SomethingAwful rules apply here.

I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people that do.

I want to watch a good action movie that has zero cg blood and no computerized color correction. The more squibs the better. Please assume I have seen all the obvious top grossing ones. Bonus if it's on Netflix but it's not a necessity. Ideally not a racist power fantasy either.

What about Ringo Lam’s Full Contact? Killer cast and great action. It’s no Robocop but plenty of blood. There’s a little bit of misogyny and homophobia but not too bad compared to the Hong Kong standards of the time. It’s a fun bit of violent hyper-masculine bullshit.

Hardcore Henry i believe ticks these boxes? you may have seen it. they went with practical effects throughout the movie as much as they possibly could. there are like one or two scenes i think that even have CG at all

e: i guess i was lied to about the effects in this movie

I asked this in the previous thread and got great results, so I figure I'd give it another go around: what are some films soaked in the joy and heartache and passion and self-destruction of youth? Last time I got Badlands, Streets of Fire, and Punishment Room out of it all of which felt perfect.

It's not much for joy, but if you want the heartache and self-destruction of youth, The Devil, Probably absolutely fits.

I'm not sure if you're joking, but that movie is like, CGed out the rear end in a top hat, including plenty of CG blood and color correction.

Nice Guys, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Free Fire, Pain & Gain

Crank 1 and 2 might fit the vibe you're going for, same with Hot Fuzz, In Bruges, The Guard, and Baby Driver. Folks around here like Smokin' Aces and Seven Psychopaths even though I didn't really care for them.

Any ideas for lesser known dark crime thrillers/mysteries? Bonus points if it has a neo-noir feel. I'm thinking in the vein of Memento, Seven, Prisoners, maybe Zodiac? I've seen all the popular Korean ones too.

Define lesser known. I'm still waiting for the sequel to Mr. Brooks. Copycat is probably not lesser known.

Actually just gonna pull from an IMDB list, Identity? Cold Creek Manor is sort of underrated? One Hour Photo.

I don't really know from "lesser known" I guess. I could have said Lovely Bones from memory at least, and Mystic River (needs a sequel), Sleepers. Inherent Vice. Frailty. Winter's Bone. The Human Stain.

e: there's one on the tip of my tongue that I really need to ask in the identify a movie thread that I saw once, very southern, very noir, probably not more than a decade old, sort of Grishamy (answered my own question The Gingerbread Man)

Thanks! I'd say most of those are lesser known because I've asked for the staples before and from your list only seen Identity, One Hour Photo, Frailty, and Inherent Vice. The first three meet what im looking for but I didn't like Inherent Vice, though I can see why you'd reccomend it since it is neo noir style, just not dark enough for me and I didn't get the comedy style.

I would've provided a bigger list of what I've seen to better define lesser known but I'm extremely low on sleep and can't think at the moment. It sounds like you've already provided a great list of unwatched suggestions from the minimal info I gave, I'll check them out!

It doesn't really hit the self-destruction part, but Linda Linda Linda has just about everything else I want out of a movie about youth. Really nails that high school feeling and is just a very nice and pleasant movie to watch. Also a great movie about being young and in a band.

I don't know if any of these are super obscure but the Pusher trilogy, A Prophet, Blue Ruin, Elle, Good Time, Killing Them Softly, Animal Kingdom, Martha May Marcy Marlene, maybe Dead Man's Shoes?

Seconding Cure. I guess you've already seen Burning but it's good enough that I'm mentioning it in case.

I haven't seen any of those except Blue Ruin and the American tv series Animal Kingdom. Also forgt to mention to the other fellow I've seen Mystic River and that was a good one too with the sort of tone I'm looking for, but a bit of a strange ending. Thanks for all the reccomendations guys! Certainly I have a lot of options to check out now.

Maybe I'll start with Gingerbread Man, The Cure, and Burning.

The ending to Mystic River practically implied a sequel didn't it? Very odd but haven't seen that in a long time.

Streaming is a plus.

The Driver and To Live and Die in L.A. I'd throw John Boorman's Point Blank in there too if you haven't watched it. And it's a lot goofier than Mann's output, but maybe Body Double too.

To Live and Die in LA and Point Blank are solid recommendations. I'd also add Straight Time, Blood Simple, Get Carter, as well as Drive if it's not utterly obvious. Maybe Nightcrawler?

There are a few other directions you could go beyond that really. I think a lot of Mann's focus on the criminal as amoral hyperskilled professional came from the wave of French post-noir crime films, which didn't lack for mood or style. If subtitles aren't an obstacle you might check out Jean-Pierre Melville's work, e.g. Le Doulos, Le Samourai, Le Cercle Rouge.

Lord, I ask you to watch over me as I pop an ollie off this 50-foot ramp. If I fail, I'll be seeing you.
I just finished watching My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It was an alright rom-com, but I really enjoyed the focus on the main character’s family and their culture. I’m looking for similar light-hearted movies where the character’s family and cultural background play a big role, things like Moonstruck, Eat Drink Man Woman, and probably a lot more I can’t think of right now.

I know there are films like The Joy Luck Club that sort of fit what I’m looking for, but I’ve been in the mood for less drama and more comedy lately. I prefer non-romantic comedy, but it's fine if it is. I'm also fine with non-English movies. :)

I'm looking for interesting thriller crime movies. Stuff where the people investigating get into the head of the killer and the world's they inhabit. Stuff like Silence of the Lambs and the first season of True Detective. I have a moderate tolerance for subtitles and very little for jump scares.
