Lots of good stuff in the responses (the globe isn't from Eva though) I program visualizations + computer UIs and Eva was a high school influence https://twitter.com/urbanfoxxxx/status/1143615111623520257?s=21

Anyway, I'm going to make a bold statement: Hideki Anno is completely right to criticize escapism and how the Evangelion franchise was used for escapism even when it's message was to not engage in escapism. Also, it's hypocritical to criticize fans for using the series for escapism when you directly profited and enabled that escapism with tons of merchandise and wish-fulfillment spin-off series

I forget if this is answered later, I've only watched a few episodes, but one thing that goes unanswered early on is: How did they know the angels were going to arrive 15 years after second impact? I'm just imagining a lot of board room meetings with Gendo trying to convince a bunch of suits that no, our best bet really is to invest in giant human puppets that can only be piloted by a handful of children.

Just finished EoE and the series, after not having seen anything from the series since I was twelve and was shown EoE cold (and it was at least nice to get context this time, and be like not twelve...) Only thoughts right now are: 1. Seeing Rei as a spectral image looking at the body of Misato in EoE, which seemed to be the angle of the view we have in 25/26 where we get the flash of Misato's body. Like we are looking through her eyes in 25/26, and wondering: is that when instrumentality begins? 2. Later in EoE we get a more complete scene of Misato having sex while Shinji is watching, which seemed to line up with when Misato yells "no don't show him that" in 25/26, but we never really see it then, but can only infer. 3. The conversation on the previous page about Rei/ghost in the early episodes of the series brought me back to the first two points.

I just watched this for the first time since I was a kid. I really liked episodes 25-26 more then EoE even though EoE has that trippy "Fantastic Planet" vibe going for it. It occured to me on re-watch that the angels don't seem to come from space but live on/in the Earth. Or perhaps start spawning on Earth after the second impact.

Watching through the whole series for the first time and just got to episode 14. I'm guessing this is where the budget ran out since suddenly it's all reused footage and nonsense biblical allusions.

Episode 14 is a bit of a clip show but this show's problems were never with money, but instead time and direction

Thank you to whoever suggested the Waypoint episode where they talk about Eva. I haven't listened in a while, so it was nice re-entry. It also sounds like they're going to cover a few more episodes in the future as well. Austin practically pisses his pants with excitement

Yeah, they're def doing more. they posted pics of editing the audio file last night and the first episode of them talking about Ep. 1 - 7 is like three and a half hours so lol

It is (was, rather) the game division of Vice, run by ex-Giant Bomb editor Austin Walker. Austin is a big mech guy and when Eva was announced for Netflix months ago he got his crew on board for a watch & podcast. Waypoint technically doesn't exist anymore and they got rolled into general Vice which might mean some of them are not long for those jobs.

the translation to 'leftist terrorists' is a dumb choice because its 100% the kind of thing thats laser engineered to cause twitter outrage from people with 'anarchocommunist' in their bio and nobody in the west is gonna have the context to figure out what its referencing, and even on its own its just a weird wording choice, but also i'd really, really hesitate to say it implies anything about the translator beyond that he's an old dude who's way too immersed in 90s japanese culture.

like it seemed weird to me that Anno or someone at the company that basically exists to faciliate his creative vision would suddenly get cold feet re: Kaworu now, after how they portrayed the character in the original series, let alone Rebuild 3, but it wasn't completely beyond the realm of weird translation screw-ups or a misguided attempt to be more palatable to a Western audience but now it seems much more plausible that they just hired the worst possible person for the localization

It's not like their oversight of the translation stopped before the final draft and he just snuck these things in there.

The translator works at khara and has for a long time afaik. e: from ANN "Kanemitsu has provided translations for the staff who would eventually form Khara since the early days of General Products in 1989-1990, the retail outlet and merchandising store that complimented Gainax. He has been working with Khara on translation assistance since the very first Rebuild film in 2007. " Motto fucked around with this message at 19:38 on Jun 27, 2019 |

Retail and Merch implies to me he was turning "Me So Sexy Shinjikun Shirts" into English or translating the flavor text for store items. So basically a really dry translation application vs. "Let me deliberately color this work with my viewpoint" creative work.

It would be really weird that khara after literally All of Evangelion in Any Medium Ever and Especially Rebuild 3 decided that enough was enough and actually Shinji and Kaworu shouldn't be super obviously gay anymore. That a guy that's worked for them for years that's into Nazi Strike Witches and thinks child porn anime and manga is fine actually because it doesn't hurt real children decided that now Shinji and Kaworu are ~ambiguous~ and that the terrorists involved are specifically leftists because he can get away with translating those things as that and still be 'correct' would still be really weird, but in a different way and is much more believable. Both could be true, but it feels like this guy being an official (?) khara translator means that anything he says counts as being mandated by khara so both could technically be true, but it's still about this guy and how he sucks.

I think the fact that the translator likes a series that Anno also likes is pretty weak evidence that he's gone rogue and started deliberately subverting the series. Some Khara exec getting spooked at the audience laughing at all the Shinji/Kaworu scenes seems more plausible to me.

i mean i saw it on netflix for the first time, and honestly the context of the kaworu scene made me think it was just a goofy translation for whatever reason (and then this was actually enforced when he was SHOCKINGLY an angel, cuz i thought it was one of those "they are approximating human behavior" things) the scene carried a lot of weight for me though because it called back to misato putting her hand on shinji's and him recoiling drastically. there's no indication whatsoever than shinji is gay or bisexual, while there are a handful that he's straight, so to me the hugely important significance of the scene was that he was so desperate for unconditional love and acceptance that it didn't matter to him if kaworu was gay, wasn't gay, whatever. he accepted shinji so shinji was more than happy to give himself over. this was reinforced more with the asuka scene in eoe where she flat out said "it's not me, you'll take anyone" which is brilliant in how simultaneously selfish of shinji it is but also goes to show the depths of his brokenness

I figured that Shinji grappling with his sexuality on top of everything else that goes wrong for him in the second half fits in with the overall themes of the series.
