I found a bug I think. If you have wyrmbane and your spectral weapon gets the kill you still get the upgrade message and no actual upgrade.

I find it really aggrieving looking for which one of the many servers happens to be the one most up to date with us; it'd be kinda cool if we had more granular versioning (maybe some where just each one commit pushes a digit) where you could tell how recent of a version the server runs.

I think FK was trying to be fair to other forks but 90%* of the traffic here now is about gooncrawl so we should probably put something like this (but less lame) at the top of the OP: WANT TO PLAY GOONCRAWL SON? Trip report: New ratskin cloak(randomly drops rats as you go along doing whatever) is cute, but it's also annoying as everloving gently caress if you're using a ranged character. I also keep finding minor typos/text-only fuckery(like the ratskin cloak rats always being called hell rats even if it drops a river rat) because apparently nobody's actually proofreading these changes. Considering the more gamebreaking changes I took a couple week break to avoid, maybe new code should be playtested for more than a day or two(if they're even being playtested at all) before pushing it to the main build? Just a thought. e: Also ctrl-f still breaks the game. Good job. A+ coding. Haifisch fucked around with this message at 02:19 on Jun 18, 2019 |

The game breaking bugs weren't mine but I was the one taking my lunch the next day to get it working for the next server update since none of the people who actually broke poo poo were stepping up. Haifisch posted:Trip report: New ratskin cloak(randomly drops rats as you go along doing whatever) is cute, but it's also annoying as everloving gently caress if you're using a ranged character. As far as testing, I've created the goondev branch and set it up on a up a host that I'm paying for. I've poked a hole in the firewall and gotten a basic server running. I asked for help here, didn't get any, figured it out. This took a million years and was about as much fun as pulling my own teeth. This is trivial compared to FK's effort of course, but I feel like I've done my part to set up a place where people can test should they care to do so, including access to wiz mode. You are absolutely correct that adding new books and races demanded more detailed testing. The server was up for a full week running the latest changes. I posted the link several times asking people to get on. I played 5 games for the patch including a full game played as an abomination. I think I saw maybe 2-3 people log in during that time. I jumped in to help, I didn't expect to wind up driving the bus. I will say I now understand now the degree to which code will have been tested, including my own, before being submitted as a pull request. I will also admit I may be responsible for a couple of messages where river rats are unjustly maligned. quote:Good job. A+ coding.

You mean like when I broke the build for a week because I forgot to add an image to a commit, missed that Skeletons couldn't be selected on console or WebTiles because the column was out of draw range, or when I also just pushed a bunch of artifact changes without paying attention and broke the build/crashed games in Tomb? Or any of the other numerous bugs I missed and are still present like omniscient cacodemons? Programming is hard, cut them some slack. Sometimes the testing you do doesn't cover everything properly (like the enum stuff, which only really starts reading its head with previous saves).

In more positive news I just 15-runed an Abomination of Gozag. I did two zigs and only got scared a couple of times. Once you actually get some rings and enough cash to start spawning merchants you can get out of control but having the Salamander Hide as your Archeologist box was just :chefkiss: This sounds crazy but I did not find a single pair of artefact boots the entire game. Unsure if this was a bug or not but I would have thought that they'd have spawned at some point. Curiously though the game spammed enchanted boots at me but after I got my Running Shoes I stopped caring. Changes to unrand weapons are great. My only real idea for an activated power would be something like for exhaustion and maybe slow or something you 'flood all targets nearby with knowledge, driving lesser creatures insane and animating any nearby weapons'.

I appreciate the enthusiasm, during the week I don't always show it because my work has been hell but you're the reason people are playing aboms and grey elves right now. You keep doing you. I like the idea of Ash having an active power, although I think I've forgotten to use retraining in 90% of my Ash games so I probably will forget to use this one as well. About the only thing I am good at is hitting aa and sometimes ab with Oka. Ash is already plenty strong but like Oka once your skills are in the 20s there's not much point. Maybe in both cases the skills could exceed 27.

It's been up since 6-14. http://66.232.96.66:8080 is the server - I'm working on a domain name for it. The only issue I see so far is some ghosting on images sometimes. This may be related to the version of the tornado web server or the 500,000 warning messages I got on .png files being interlaced when I compiled. The only thing in play right now on test are some fixes to crab languages and the taxonomy of cloak-bourne rats. I promised I would do a new reaver spell or two so I will deliver on that. Online there are only 6 pull requests pending and they are all other races. These will have to wait until the authors resolve the conflicts as I don't have access to the source repos and we also have to figure out how to add another column to the race list. Bringing forward certain changes from main trunk would be cool as hell. But that's the Real Deal and will have to wait for someone competent enough to have a cloak fart rats without loving it up. Also, when I have time I will talk to our crawl discord about setting up a real server and setting up a cron job to pull code daily and reboot it. The directions I found were enormously complicated even if you were on the exact same Linux version. I prefer Centos but if anyone has experience setting a server up on another Linux version I would be willing to look at switching. FYI I'm glad none of you can hear me, I used Linux in times of yore and as a result I can't stop rhyming it with "Linus". I look like a dumbass at work on a daily basis. And also I mispronounce Linux.

i am gonna play gooncrawl but i will say i didn't find anything in vanilla that was too odious, aside from malmutate existing because i am extremely annoyed at randomly getting dinged permanently with petty poo poo. like i don't care if its not impacting optimal play its like i don't want to turn into a poo poo blob freak radiating visable stink lines, this is supposed to be an escapist experience not a fourth wall metamorphosis into my real life appearance. id play gooncrawl just for getting rid of that. mutations need some more zest anyways, all the plus / minus number stuff is pretty lame. the whole good / bad dichotomy is kind of bad design imo. also i made the mistake of looking at the math behind the combat and uh lol, that could probably be overhauled to make the stuff more clear instead of having strange (10 + (499d(c*100)-1)/500) poo poo. also maybe get rid of like 90% of "number between 0 and c" stuff because having like sixteen points of randomness doesnt make it sixteen times more random. I think. idk how well thought out that stuff is so maybe its all genius and I'm dumb.

The problem with overhauling complex crawl code is that you need people who understand the complex crawl code. Even mainline crawldev missed a "players are suddenly doing twice as much damage" bug until they noticed tourney winrates were unusually high.

Cardiovorax posted:Lol, yeah, that kind of thing why you aren't really supposed to look at the code. The point of formulas like that is to create a curve with a very specific shape. There may be a mathematically easier way to do it, or at least something very close to it, but one of the things about video games is that they're all really full of cludgy solutions like that and it doesn't matter much because no one ever has to calculate it by hand. Oh, I know. The problem is, that particular formula, which is based on what I saw, is total garbage and produces strange, counter intuitive results due to odd constants and the like. Like, multiplying a function by 100 just to divide it and then to subtract one just makes it hard to gauge what's going on as the numbers scale up in late game. A computer may do the math but humans still need to understand it, and that goes double for probability. My intent was to make a tool which would spit out a chance% to hit instead of having to guess, mind you. Well, at least not so long as the effects of the formula can be reasonably well intuited in-game. If it gives you random results that don't make sense even as you play the game, then fair enough, but Diablo 2 is basically one big black box and it never stopped people from theorycrafting and optimizing their builds to death, you know what I mean?

Spell power calculations are easy. Just imagine you have a 10 horsepower car and draw a curve of what it would cost to get it up to 200 horsepower. Did you go broke? Then you did it right.

Haven't really played in over a year, but I loaded up a MiFi today and 15 runed in under four hours, which is pretty good for me. I started Gozag, and swapped to TSO for the postgame. I got pretty lucky early on and got an eveningstar from one of the early named mans, which was my weapon through the whole game. 10 total points of slaying was nice too. With all of the gozag shopping I was pretty well equipped at the end. I also bought out a lot of the potions and might/hasted myself up for all the pan/hell lords. http://crawl.berotato.org/crawl/morgue/FilthyApe/morgue-FilthyApe-20190627-220455.txt I was surprised about the lack of steps up in tomb. Going from 1 to 2 was always a lot of stairdancing. I kind of had to rely on a lucky teleport to save me there. Thankfully it happened.
