I took two codeine. All my stats went to 0 and I dropped dead of dehydration a full 30 minutes later. Even cheating and resetting my needs to 0 doesn’t work because it does enough dehydration to kill you within 30 minutes. I have to cheat myself a blood filtration CBM to get this fiendish opium out of my system.

Codeine! You can get that poo poo in cold medicine! :wtf:

Yeah. They changed the length of a turn from 6 secs to 1 sec, which is good.

They decided the massive repercussions from that decision could be left for later, which is less good.

Most of the glaring issues from experimental right now can be traced back to that change.

I feel like I've got a good handle on the early game with the exception of the part where you really need fire to cook food or and boil water, but the only reliable way to do this is Trapping which is an expensive skill. I just survived 2.5 days and scavenged a ton of buildings with the Strength bonus and didn't find a single lighter or fire source and then died of dehydration

I tested this too. You pick up dehydration faster than you can physically drink and eventually will die of dehydration with a belly full of water.

I get that it’s just simulating your heart stopping without actually modeling the organ, but it’s still silly. In hindsight, I think the problem was that I took two codeine and then also took a couple of aspirin. In real life that wouldn’t be an issue but I think in the code both just stack a generic “painkiller”. And once that number gets high enough, your heart simply explodes.

Try making a strong tough melee character and solving absolutely every problem by headbutting it. You will die eventually but your comparatively short life will be ridiculously badass.

I never got far into new scavenger. I got to the point I was supposed to travel Far East to some city but would always die along the way. Didn’t really pick up the crafting either as it seemed mostly trial and error.

Yeah crafting seems like something where you're supposed to either have a Wiki page open or just have a notepad. My last run I seemed to do well but got stuck in a loop of walking to a river to fill up all my water bottles, going back to boil them in my campsite, then being thirsty again

I feel that way for some CDDA recipes, especially the cooking ones. The last time I played, the game differentiated between sealed and unsealed containers, so you had to open your cans of broth or tomatoes or whatever so the game would recognize them as ingredients.

Another game idea: gourmet cooking after the apocalypse.

For CDDA I'm torn between thinking the people making how cooking works have never cooked in their lives and just assuming they didn't want to deal with the complexities of a reasonable cooking system.

Recipes are super wooden/static for the most part, and timescales (and scaling quantity) are pretty silly as well.

That kinda matches up with the drug stuff being made by someone that had never taken a drug

Are all of these things in the .json files? How hard would it be to keep the system as is, and write a mod that makes all of those things at more realistic values?

goatsestretchgoals
Jun 4, 2011

A lot of the static data is in JSON, but single use items aren’t. For instance, the rubber hose doesn’t have a tool quality of “siphons gas”, it’s just a rubber hose. If you want to siphon gas, you need a rubber hose in your inventory. Why doesn’t your toolbox have a rubber hose in it? Because siphoning gas is hardcoded to the rubber hose item, that’s why.

It's weird always trying to find the most convenient/productive recipe like you're ordering off a menu. Post-apoc you'd be much more likely to just throw everything in a pot for some mashed up stew. But instead oh you can't make this because you don't have the proper amount of rice or oatmeal servings and no cereal won't work.
The gently caress it won't, I'm living in the wreckage of civilization. I'm gonna substitute Cheerios and I'll be completely fine.

Yeah I think the issue here is just the rigid nature of the crafting system not mapping well to cooking. There are a lot of alternate recipes to make the same food with ingredient substitutions but at the end of the day they have to specifically define each one which renders something like a big ol' stew pot impractical just because nobody wants to scroll through a list of 500 different "stew" recipes to model out every possible permutation of ingredients, let alone write out definitions for them in the JSON data.

It would probably require a big overhaul of the system in general but it'd be much easier to just tag certain foods as certain categories (maybe in quantities, too, but I figure that's mostly covered by certain things having a ton of servings for its size) and then make recipes require those categories to make.

Inexplicable Humblebrag
Sep 20, 2003

can't they just re-use the tool system for that? instead of hammering 1, 2, 3 etc you can have starch 1, 2, 3

Yeah this is how NEO Scavenger handles its whole crafting system and it makes a lot more sense for a postapocalyptic setting where you're just going to be using whatever you can find. CDDA has an aspect of that with the whole tool properties thing, but it would make a lot of sense to extend that to ingredients as well. This would be a complete overhaul of the crafting system though so it strikes me as a project that nobody is likely to want to take on. It would likely require completely redoing the interface for crafting as well since you'd have to specify exactly what items you want to use when you have more than one thing that can fulfill a requirement (the way it does that now where it just prompts you each time would get old really fast).

Survivor and nomad gear is still vastly superior to all other forms of armor and clothing because somehow a moron with a needle and a ton of thread is able to make far better and more flexible body armor than actual military designers, who built a suicide vest that depending on the plates actually puts you in more danger, a helmet, and then called it a day.

The only thing better than your preferred survivor suit set is literal powered armor.
