The video game Cyberpunk 2077 is going to come out some time next year and while I am kind of looking forward to it because it will have Keanu Reeves and Lady Gaga in it, and it might even be fun to play, I am more excited about riding a motorcycle around the city while listening to music appropriate to the atmosphere and setting if they are well executed. Maybe I am not well traveled enough or too much of a nitpicker, but I have not had an easy time finding music that really feels "cyberpunk" despite how much other media out there deals with these kind of themes. What I have noticed is that there is plenty of music that could be described as either cyber or punk, but I haven't seen a lot that is a real synthesis of the two and that's what I'm hoping you can share here. I'd love to see suggestions for music in this style, whatever it may mean, or discuss what it means! I will also keep a list of the best suggestions in the OP if anyone else wants me to.

I know I don't need to type all this but I'm enjoying it so feel free to skip to the last part if you aren't interested in the rambling/background etc I understand that "Cyberpunk" is a vague criteria because there is so much room for interpretation but also the way I've usually seen it represented deals very loosely or superficially with the "punk" part in particular, most often reducing it to broad strokes of fashion or narrative. It's not my place to say what punk is as an ethos or aesthetic but in pop culture I feel the term is abused or rendered meaningless especially in the case of stuff like "steampunk". In cases like that I just don't see how it applies based on my experiences with punk media, culture, and people, or as an individual in a society that is only interested in conformity. Yes reading that is funny to me too but it's genuine; it seems like people slapped the label on because it sounded cool and that was the extent of its meaning to them. I have no expectation that the big budget video game with punk in the title will be any different but it will be fun to put together a playlist that has some actually "cyberpunk" sounding music on it. What I'm looking for is music that is futuristic sounding but more transgressive, or has more to say than the stuff that is in vogue right now. I am also interested in electronic or otherwise futuristic sounding music from the past that is on the outside of, or at odds with, popular culture

Back when The Matrix Online was still a thing, I used to turn the in-game music off and find some web radio stations that played a shitload of industrial music, so my suggestions would be to find a bunch of industrial bands, like Spahn Ranch, Front 242, KMFDM, Laibach, Chemlab, etc., and then go from there. For "cybermetal" bands, start with Fear Factory, Orgy, Prong (specifically Cleansing), Front Line Assembly (they often straddle the line between industrial metal and more synth-type stuff), and most anything by Strapping Young Lad/Devin Townsend. I also heartily endorse most anything retrowave/synthwave, I used to have a custom radio station that played that kinda stuff in GTA Online for the PC.

Yes! These guys are probably the most "cyberpunk" style music I have heard, especially their early stuff like Geography since they leaned more into the EBM style as they progressed. I'd love to hear more music similar to that, or F/I, or some of DAT Politics early stuff that isn't just timestretched cat noises or whatever

But there's already a megathread for that kind of thing so I would like it if anybody posting retro or synthwave music here can try to give some examples with more of a punk style or energy

i think frankly your approach to the idea and setting of "cyberpunk" is perhaps too narrow and literal. there are all kinds of genres of music that would be appropriate in a cyberpunk setting, not just music that combines "cyber" electronic music and "punk" style

puve posted:I'm not stopping anybody from posting stuff like that, but there are other threads I could read if I just wanted Vangelis over an 808 or whatever that is not what im talking about at all. the original term "cyberpunk" just referred stories about young misfits and criminals in a mass media/tech dystopia, not "punk" in the sense that they literally listen to music that people in 2019 would necessarily trace back to their "experiences with punk media, culture, and people". i posted the front242 as a joke because its certainly what "cyberpunk" music sounded like in 1991 but by 2077 it will have same distance that we currently do with Golden Oldies from the 40's and 50's. music for old farts. music they play in grocery stores and hotel lobbies because it's inoffensive music that everyone kind of vaguely remembers, and doesn't challenge anything or anyone. whatever music is actually challenging the norms of the 2070's it's unlikely to involve anything that people today think of as "punk". I will be honest neither of those songs really do it for me for some reason I had no idea Billy Idol made an album called "Cyberpunk" and now I have to listen to it even though that song isn't his best lol Somehow I never heard of Sigue Sigue Sputnik, I could see them being an influence on DAT Politics who I like a lot, that song is just plain ignorant and I love it. Them and DAF are the kind of stuff I was looking for
