I, uh

Did that person watch Hereditary? Because as much as left-leaning people seem to love it, you'd think that movie would be loving chud catnip since it features Goetic demon summoning, the horrifying death of a mentally disabled kid, and spends a lot of its runtime trying its damnedest to make abuse victims very uncomfortable

Like you'd think it would not only be getting play as an "anti-SJW" horror movie, but also attracting QAnon weirdos due to the Paimon angle

(yeah I finally bit the bullet and it was exactly as not-fun of an experience as I'd figured it would be. well-made movie that I will never watch again, confirmed for me that Aster's stuff is just generally gonna be a hard pass.)

Are we separating pagan horror from santanism horror? Because if not, santanism horror owns, what the hell. Black Sunday? The Devil Rides Out?? Rosemary's Baby?!?

Yeah pagan horror for me is, narrowly defined, Northern European people dancing and having a good time outdoors while sacrificing people for their religious ceremonies but also not actually summoning any badass deities. So for various reasons I wouldn't count The Ritual, The VVitch, Baskin or The Invitation.

Satanism horror is people from every geographic location having a bad time with satans.

Jim Jarmusch recently released a star-studded ensemble zombie movie. That barrel has a false bottom.

Edit: actually, what subgenre hasn’t already been completely stripmined? Torture porn, zombies, jump scare demon movies, found footage, home invasion - all past the point of deconstruction. I guess we haven’t had a banner werewolf year in a long time.

I don't think pagan horror has necessarily been stripmined, I'll still gladly give any entry with good buzz a try. I just think it's inherently not very interesting to watch made up rituals/religious practices.

I think getting picky about genres is a way to not really enjoy new horror movies. We are necessarily going to see “remixes”, remakes and retakes. Originality is a finite pool.

They're pretty much a really mixed bag. Pooka and New Year New You were good. Down's a story we've seen already done a half dozen times in better films. All That We Destroy had me dozing off in my chair.

Hagazussa report: Pretty pictures filmed at 0.5x speed, droning music for the folks who think The VVitch was too fast paced and had too many overt horror elements. Makes me wanna go hiking.

I think it's saying that they sometimes are entirely all about the deaths. Like how the Final Destination movies just took the slasher format, removed the killer, made Death itself kill people, so that it was entirely about that. I guess.

From what I've seen I think the only movie on that image that doesn't have a female protagonist is Get Out, and I think that doesn't need to be explained.

"Estrogen edition." I assume the "soy" thing is that stupid "soy boy" alt right nonsense. So its all "you're not MAN enough for me! Be an alpha/man, not a beta/woman!"

I first watched Henry with my dad when I was about 15, after I rented it and he was like "oh yeah, I heard that was some classic horror movie that's supposed to be really disturbing" and wanted to see it too. Can't remember if he'd seen it already, or knew somebody who did but... well, it was awkward to say the least.

I'm just glad he didn't put me in therapy for wanting to see it.

Henry and Serbian Film are both babby's first xtreme movie and theyre both...not great. Well Henry's a good movie, I think it's overrated but it's still a good movie. Serbian Film is just hot garbage.

I think the best path into gore/splatter movies is old HGL/Fulci movies > French New Wave Horror > underground stuff like Angst and Der Todesking > Toetag/Unearthed/Vinegar Syndrome movies

I'm not sure anyone would put Henry on a list of "xtreme movies" with A Serbian Film, though. It's reputation comes from its tone, not any onscreen gore.
