What he said...I have my sensitivity set to really high, so it barely takes a flick for me to get a head shot so I have pretty good luck with it. The 26 rounds it holds is great - I use that, the varmit and dual sawed-offs for my main load out and usually only try for heads shots. I stink with the rifles and anything with a scope.

I can't remember if it's listed in the catalog, but a big differentiator for me with the weapons is speed. How fast you shoot and how fast you reload. And I might be talking out of my rear end, but I'm pretty sure that all the high damage weapons are really slow. Double barrel shotgun might be more powerful, but it's slow to reload, so I prefer the semi-auto. I'll admit that I'm a bad shot in tight situations.

There are more unique weapons. But I think the difference is mostly cosmetic. Except for some melee weapons that you can throw and pick back up.

The nice thing about the game, at least the single player, is that it doesn’t really demand peak performance, so even if a weapon is “worse” than others, you’re good to just use it if you think it’s cool and it fulfills your cowboy fantasies.

Like I really enjoy the way the bolt action feels, even if the Springfield with express rounds is probably a much more useful gun.

Nash posted:

Yeah, if you slowly press down R2 with your gun holstered, it fills the meter and behaves like you’re in a duel, letting you open up a fight with cool slowmo hip fire poo poo. It’s good for those encounters where NPCs get in your face but aren’t instantly hostile.

I actually wish the game let you drop stuff. I don't really need a rolling block, rare rolling block and weathered rolling block rifle, and some of the weapons are straight upgrades so whenever you get the double-action or the other good revolver you don't really ever need to use your cattleman again. Or at least let me name stuff so I can differentiate my baller tricked-out bolt-action with the random one I picked up in Guarma.

But this is a problem in every R* game and will never change so welp

Are you comparing the stats in-game? Because when you use a weapon more often you start getting better at all of its stats over time such that a new weapon might look worse since you haven’t “leveled it up”.

This is never really explained anywhere because Rock Star, I guess.

Lmao yeah I am and I bet that explains it, I’ve used the carbine a lot even though im still near the beginning of the game, so that is probably why it has such a noticeably improved damage stat

I had no idea and now I know about it but don’t know exactly how it works or how significant it is, which, as you noted, is extremely rock star design

The volcanic is indisputably really cool, but I just like revolvers too dang much to not use them in my cowboy game. I do wish the schofield wasn't so much better than the others though, because I don't like the way it reloads, but what can you do

Which reminds me, is it worth going through the what I assume is a lot of effort to find the collectibles - dinosaur bones, cigarette cards, and rock carvings? Do you run into any of the bones or carvings incidentally or is it like I’m gonna want to pull up a guide and do them as a separate thing?

I used maps to search for the bones and carvings, clearing an area at a time and finding all of both types. A lot of them you'd never run into wandering, and are also very easy to miss.

I actually had lots of fun doing this because you'll also run into lots of other fun stuff, even if you're plotting your route from one collectible to the next.

Cigarette cards are easy to find but a chore to complete - the recommendation I saw is to just to go buy premium cigarettes until you get them all - should run around $100-$200 to do. You can sell all the dupes once you're done.

Is it worth spending pretty large sums of money on camp upgrades? Like Dutch’s tent upgrade is two hundred, the horse thing was three, and restocking is around a hundred now that I’ve upgraded provisions

Also if you’re witnessed committing a crime and intimidate the witness you’re good, right?

I used the Cattlemen revolvers for 90% of the game, and they were great. There's a lot of freedom in the weapons you use because of the leveling and that a headshot is a headshot, no matter the gun. The Cattlemens' aiming accuracy didnt constrict as fast as the schofields ever, but stat wise they were stronger or as good in every other way so I stuck with them because I prefer the look and sound of the cattlemen revolvers.

Yeah I got longer barrels and made complementary blue steel cattleman guns, spent most of my time using those (or the ones I took off gunslingers). Pistols are the best.

Around the middle of Chapter 3 you'll wish there were more camp things to upgrade because you're gonna be ~flush with cash~

And I think you're good with intimidating witnesses, but half the time they resist and it just leads to more violence so I forget. At the very least, going to jail isn't that bad and can even lead to some cool scenes you may have otherwise missed.

The problem with intimidating a witness is that it takes a minute and if somebody comes along and sees you doing it, now they’re a witness and you’ve got to intimidate them, and so on and on. Easier and faster to just kill the witness too and roll on out or there before it takes you down a path of destruction

Re:

I was doing the "Rob four registers in one day" challenge. Robbed the general store in Valentine. Decided to grab a cigar on my way out. The store owner freaks out and runs out screaming about robbery. He wasn't nearly that bothered about me robbing the till at gunpoint.

Still managed to complete the challenge, hid in the hills until things cooled down than ran back into town and robbed the doc and gunsmith (killing him in the process) then rode like hell to Strawberry and robbed both the general store register and the illegal side business.

Then I spent some time riding back and forth from the trapper and Emerald Ranch with perfect cow/sheep/goat skins for clothes.

If you're closing in on a treasure chest in RDO, can another player assassinate you and grab the chest for themselves, or is the chest only accessible by the player who reads the map?

Edit: Also, if I buy a fast travel post for my camp, do I still have to pay to use it, or did Rockstar change that?

I’m sort of confused in general by guns in this game, there seem to be a bunch that are sort of redundant and I don’t understand what role they fill, like the double action revolver

I’m also kinda curious about online, is it mostly people doing game modes or is free roam actually the sorta main thing with lots to do even on top of the hunting/fishing/basic stuff built into the gameplay

There is a main storyline involving the online character you create. It's kind of short but it's pretty fun and there are more story missions to do once you become dishonorable enough. There are also PvP instances, and free roam stranger missions involving repossession, assassination, escorts, etc where other players in the lobby can try to foil your plans. Most of my online time is spent in free roam, but you can rack up a decent pile of money just doing PvP showdowns.

Every time I tried to rob someone a witness would appear and I'd get caught up in a farcical witness murder cascade that would eventually land me with a bounty far higher than any money I could make from robbing.

One of the challenges is "rob 5 townsfolk" or something and I didn't even manage that lol

The trick is doing it at night and picking off people in alleyways or sidepaths when no one is around.

I robbed three people in maybe 10 minutes just by standing by the same path in Annesburg in the dead of night and then creeping up on them from out the shadows.

Travelers outside town more often than not have guns and will shoot you if you try robbing them. This can also be a thing in towns depending on the town and the NPC but you can usually see the gun on them and just not rob them if they have one.
