The Holy Mountain features a scene in which the characters conclude that someone who is telling them that drugs are the key to spiritual enlightenment is a snake-oil salesman, but the film is not "anti-drug." The drug is presented as value neutral, it's not LSD that sets off the chain reaction, it just reveals the paranoia and cynicism that's already endemic, similar to how the point of the scene in The Holy Mountain is not that drugs are inherently bad, but that people use drugs for pernicious reasons.

Shudder is not available in my country so I tried to access it via VPN (I could get Criterion to work that way, and access to the Netflix/Amazon Prime US movie selection) but Shudder complains about my credit card not being from US/England/Someothercountry. Anyone knows some way to get around this? Midsommar is only getting a release here next month, why have the Gods of Horror forsaken me

I still think the Cage factor puts Mandy over the top but I think the more straightforward narrative of Mandy allowed me to then go back to Beyond the Black Rainbow and appreciate it a lot more. It gave me some sort of insight into how Cosmatos works I guess, it allowed me to put the pieces of the story in BtBR together much more easily so that I could then sit back and enjoy the visuals.

I don’t know if I was just too bleary eyed and tired last night but I’m not sure I get the ending to Knife+Heart. Was the killer motivated because he saw a porno and an actor reminded him of his dead lover, who died in the fire that scarred him? Or was he just crazy from that event and was just killing the actors in the porn just because?

I think what I like so much about Beyond the Black Rainbow comes down to two things: one, it's a prison break movie, and second, it has a very interesting take on the significance of enlightenment. Nyle and Elena are both exposed to this mystical source of truth, and as far as I can tell, the experience is basically just suffering. It's almost Hellraiser-esque except it goes one step further and discards the Cenobites, it's not as if the experience of Hell were created by human fetish-monks, whose interpretation might be fallible, who might have created hell rather than being created by it -- it's just straight up, "the truth of existence is suffering." Nyle responds to this by embracing selfishness, by basically becoming a reflection of what he saw: just this living avatar of cruelty. Early in the movie there's a scene where he's quizzing Elena on whether she's in pain ("Have you had... any headaches?") and then torments her by noisily tapping his pen until she sheds a tear, at which point he's satisfied. The one thing holding him back is a certain level of hypocrisy; hence his mountain of painkillers at home and his drugged wife who does nothing but praise and affirm him. (Eventually he lets even these go and just totally immerses himself in truth / suffering, becoming one with the universe -- and in the process becoming an inhuman monster.) Elena, on the other hand, just wants to get away from this. It's hard to get a really clear grasp on her thought process since she doesn't speak, but she retains human attachments (holding on to her mother's photo). She's almost completely unsocialized, and lashes out violently when provoked, but she's motivated by survival and escape, not cruelty. What really makes the movie tick for me, though, is that it's not satisfied with saying "oh poor Elena, she's just a victim and has been reduced to little more than an animal." It actually portrays Elena's response -- survive, get away from the pain, get out of the weird psychedelic truth-land and back to the normal world of people and trees and rocks -- not as mere instinct or ignorance, but as a legitimate response to enlightenment. She's still aware of the truth; her psychic powers are a permanent mark of that experience, and they let her do things that other people can't. She knowingly rejects pure transcendence (perhaps because of how sterile and cold it is, and how easily it justifies material cruelty) in favor of an enlightened life in this world. Going "beyond the black rainbow" is just, like, going out and embracing new experiences and living your best life with the cosmic truth that yes, existence will always entail some degree of suffering and evil behind you instead of in front of you. Yeah it seemed very true to the genre, though I’ve only seen the biggest ~10 or so giallos so I’m far from an expert. I was just trying to figure out if my confusion came from the film itself or from some kind of french twink face blindness. Great looking movie either way. I also really liked the protagonist being such a scumbag. She’s like a Tom Akins level scumbag.

Without that it wouldn't have been nearly as good. I think a lot of what's going on with the similar looking porn actors is that obviously they were casting guys with a certain look, it's not like it was just random coincidence.

My take was considering the ease Anne went with incorporating the current murders in her movie, she'd probably done it before with Guy's barn fire. Guy's mind's a mess with trauma blocking the memories until he goes to the theater and sees Anne's movie which pushes the memories to the fore before he's able to cope and he snaps.

The part in Beyond the Black Rainbow where Barry Nyle puts on his elaborate acid super villain outfit and gets his knife, then walks out and his wife just goes like “oh, that’s a new outfit” cracks me up maybe more than anything in actual comedy
