The magic barrier is pretty convenient, but the approaching cache of soul bucks set off this whole situation where Rimuru needs to purchase a new skill to start with.

It's convenient, but that's as a side-effect of it's intended use of suppression. If I recall correctly, there were two barriers, one to seal and another to seal AND weaken similar to the one Hinata used on Rimuru albeit this one is larger in scale, but weaker in how in saps the monsters energy. It's had the beneficial effect here of keeping their mana locked in the area. There's a few translation errors about the make up of the soul according to one of my source guys along with a few other bits and pieces, but the overall jist is clear. Edit: In the LN it details that resurrection magic and skills exist and are fairly common, but they all have some kind of flaw, usually servitude from the resuscitated, species specific, holy magic with several restrictions, and the simple issue that who you bring back may not be who left(radical change in personality and character). doomrider7 fucked around with this message at 18:33 on Jul 27, 2019 |

There are two barriers. One is a church barrier and is a weaker form of the one they used on Rimuru when he fought Hinata. The second is the one Youm's girlfriend set up on Cromwell's orders. The church barrier probably isn't doing anything to keep the souls in, since it's purpose is to degrade and prevent magic particle, which are a major component of souls.
