it was also really fun when the chip rule came into effect because for like an entire year or two, every payment terminal outside of walmart and mcdonalds took 30-60 seconds longer than before. it's only been in the past couple months that i've noticed that most small shops finally have the super-fast terminal experience that we were promised ages ago

lt's still a pain though because they're so random. Go to one place, pay for a $65 charge, insert card, get receipt, go. Go to another place, pay for a $3 charge, you have to sign. Go to another place, pay for a $5 charge, you have to wait until it prints out a hard-copy slip that you have to sign with a pen that usually doesn't work.

Yeah, this. Companies won't ever improve payment systems without having their arms twisted. And our government doesn't actually serve us.

I use Google pay everywhere I possibly can and avoids skimmer fuckery.

The biggest problem with chip readers for me is that everywhere nearby seems to use a lovely reader. The slot is at a downward angle and holds the card loosely, so the card inevitably slides a few millimeters out of the reader and CARD READ ERROR, PLEASE RE-INSERT CARD

Last I checked, they don't even have payment terminals that can be brought to the table at restaurants. You expect them to have tap-and-go or chip and pin when they don't even have the ability to keep their credit cards in sight when paying at a restaurant?

That’s to maintain the sanity of the staff. How many times could you endure an old person looking you in the eye as they stiff you on the tip that is somehow the way you make minimum wage?

Better to take the card, run it, bring back the receipt, and go back to the kitchen to scream into a dish towel as they write “go to college” in the tip line.

I think the last time I had to do that outside the states was in loving Zambia.

I loving hate places where I have to walk to the POS to type my PIN, never mind not even having a terminal.

It's available, but why would a business pay for something like that? It's not inconvenient to them, just to the customers that will have to pay regardless of the mechanism to do it. (I'm being somewhat facetious here but that's basically why). Hell I know several places that only started taking cards at all a few years ago - I assume they realized they were actually losing business because nobody carries cash anymore. My favorites were the ones that only take cash and conveniently have an ATM from a no-name bank that charges $3 per transaction.

Tokyo's ATMs are weird in that you can get free withdrawals, but only during the day. Had I known that I would have just topped up on cash at a slightly different time.

Basically 7/11 ATMs are free from 8-18 or something like that.

Yeah was new in the country and didn’t have cell service to see if a payment had cleared before I withdrew it. Was always second nature to check on the ATM to see how much available cash I had before trying to take it.

there are many banks and companies that provide similar services in the US but i don't know how it compares overall. a US group like yours could sign up for an account with a provider like Square, and get a chip/contactless dongle that allows a group officer to take payments and whatnot for relatively small fees

See I can kind of see lack of market demand if the technology really isn't being used by the banks but the other major reason for small retailers is that it hugely simplifies inventory management and sales tracking along with cash recording. I work in a business with a horrific pricing structure that doesn't really work neatly with these systems but if we were able to automatically record sales into our bookkeeping it would make love much simpler.

So sounds like that is an option in the US there just isn't quite enough demand and businesses are naturally averse to chasing practices. Free market baby!

That said I've run into older people here (and just those outside London) where cash is still their preferred payment system. There are businesses now that have gone card only (partly for the simper admin and partly to not be targets of robbery) and they get frustrated the other way when they don't have a contactless card.

I suppose that at least makes some sense. Another non-scam CVS related post: If you download their app, buried within settings is the ability to send receipts to email instead of printing out a mile worth of paper. It always surprises the cashier when the computer is probably telling them something like 'smart person does not want long paper'. As an extra bonus that means all of those crazy coupons are now indexed in your email. :)

How does a different piece of payment hardware simplify inventory management or sales tracking? Either way the SKU goes into the computer and inventory updates with -1 of that item.

That's another one that doesn't get mentioned enough because it's so silent. But downloading company apps exposes you to a poo poo ton shady stuff that tracks you, shares your info and sells everything they track that you do to marketing types that essentially frame your entire experience on the internet.

He said "never use a 'sign in using Facebook'" option, which I don't anyway, but this is very big genie that's escaped the bottle a long loving time ago.
