I remember one of my friends asking if I wanted to go to a show in college. It was a small show of some local band. Turns out it was Walk the Moon. He also did the same thing for Twenty One Pilots. Dude had a knack for finding cool local stuff before they blew up.

Only sort of related but I saw Kendrick Lamarr open for Kanye not long after Good Kid came out and the arena was maybe 1/4 full for his performance which seems insane in retrospect.

What attitude problem?
My school's programming council brought... Saves The Day, Motion City Soundtrack, Jack's Mannequin, Kesha, Kid Cudi, and B.O.B. for stuff I went to. I skipped Cute is What We Aim For, The Academy Is..., White Tie Affair, Cobra Starship, and Wale. I was part of the school's radio station and brought Real Estate, Woods, Class Actress, Man Man, No Age, and Cloud Nothings.

Meanwhile the school down the road brought the Black Keys, mewithoutyou, Big Boi, Dan Deacon, The Roots, The New Pornographers, Ted Leo, Aesop Rock, Sleigh Bells, and Passion Pit in that same time frame. It really is a crapshoot and you can see where the programming council decided to just bring bands that they wanted to see instead of anything interesting.

I saw Coheed open for Thursday in high school, their first album had just came out and no one knew them. Many people were like wtf his voice but warmed up quickly.

The first time I saw Rufus Wainwright was in a club called The Green Room that was so small he had to carry his keyboard in and out of the same entrance everybody else came in from.

That was the same as My Chemical Romance when I saw them from above . I saw Brand New and Thrice there on the same bill too with maybe... 50 people at that venue? Oh old emo/punk shows.

It was for sure a fire hazard because there was only one exit. I also saw the band Glasseater who never blew up but in the corner of the venue they had an SNES and the singer played me in Mortal Kombat 2 and beat my rear end like three times in a row before the show.

2004 or so, I saw Ted Leo play a college cafeteria. I was right up at the front. My ears were ringing for two days. Didn't see him live again until he just before The Both, but just couldn't get as excited about that show.

Sound is dreamy, atmospheric like RY X or Novo Amor. Vocals remind me a bit of James Vincent McMorrow.

Oh boy, do I ever. Here's some of my favourites, across a bunch of different genres. Mostly sadtimes music, because I'm a parody of myself. I've probably shared a few of these with the thread already, but here they are anyway.

French For Rabbits: Ethereal dream folk : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjx_WhrAQQM

Finn Johansson: The best mustache in NZ music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeffKzBc7hg

Emily Fairlight: Kind of gothy alt-country, maybe? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuPYL2Ubpr4

Anthonie Tonnon: Doing some of the most interesting work in NZ music these days. I hear him get compared to David Byrne quite a bit, which I can see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGBNrKEyHzU

Jonathan Bree: Some sort of weird baroque pop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxRq23qVE8A

Tiny Ruins: I got into her when I saw her opening for Sharon Van Etten a few years back, so if you like Sharon Van Etten you'll probably dig Hollie's stuff too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVmZu1360K8

Tim Blackman: He reminds me a bit of Mount Eerie's more recent stuff - sparse and sad. He's got a new album coming out in a couple of months, which I'll post about when it drops. (Also he's the nicest dude in the world) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjEK9-4OQX8

Fables: Some nice lush folk with a great voice. https://fablesnz.bandcamp.com/track/we-could-be-all

Emily Riordan: Chill music with great sad vocals https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cO6mwKgd5-s

Plus the ones that everyone's heard of: Aldous Harding, Nadia Reid, Marlon Williams, The Beths.

Holy, thank you so much! I have so much stuff to listen to now. I have friends and family in NZ, and spent a month there myself a couple years ago. I definitely feel a connection to your country, so stuff like this really helps. Also, I am a fellow sad folky music lover, so this is great.

This new one from HAIM is pretty different from what I would expect. A chill saxophone groove over a '90s hip hop beat. I dig it.

(Very mildly :nws: as the video is mostly them taking off layers of clothing, but they don't like, get naked or anything)

Apparently just a one-off, might not have anything to do with an album.
