I mean, as a consequence of his actions and murderous intent, his parents are dead. It's virtually the same as killing them, it just didn't play out exactly according to keikaku*.

*keikaku means plan

As amusing as that would be, I don't think he'd be able to have much contact with any other prisoner during his time.

In Japanese prisons, you live like a loving robot.

Oh, so not much different than working in Japan.

I really thought he was going to say he killed them - by driving them to suicide. But I guess that's what actually happened so.

I'm glad whatever he tried didn't work.

Some if it looks smart or effective but there are some big red flags even with some of the basic premises (like only allowing 8 mins/day of socialization) that show they have fundamental misconceptions about what rehabilitation is. Or maybe they know exactly what it is, and know what the goal of their habilitation is - drones.

e: i only watched the first 40 mins before i had to get back to work so maybe they touch on this

Unless something's changed recently(which I doubt), Japan's justice system relies a lot on pressuring people to confess, so he basically guaranteed he was going to prison once he confessed to a crime he didn't commit. If he never lied about doing it, he probably would have been fine.

to be honest, i have no idea what the cop dude meant about the 5 years/death penalty thing. i just put the literal meaning of his words, shrugged, and posted it haha

Still, it does make sense like...the detective is all: "Huh...this kid is just confessing, to take the shorter hit rather than the possible harder one, is it?" not knowing that with Tohru he's totally overthinking it and that he's too stupid to be doing it for any long-term reason. It's just the immediate 'I wanna be a criminal!' if that means lying his way into jail.

That would mean the state would have to give food and accomodations to any citizen that requested it, which would be insane.

heres how the trial probably went:

tohru: "i plead guilty." (prove me wrong, fuckers)
judge: "okay, take him away boys."
tohru: "what? the trial's not happening?"

I'm pretty sure that was an episode of something I briefly watched once. There were some homeless people or something that were in jail for a bit and refused to leave because they had four walls, a roof over their heads, and meals, but they had to commit a crime to be there.

I really liked the parts where you can see what the detective is thinking and what Touru thinks the detective is thinking, and they don't line up at all, haha.
