Just finished The Red Sea Diving Resort and it was pretty good. Like a much less depressing Tears of the Sun but where the heroes don't have to kill anyone.

They've been doing an Invader Zim comic for a while now. It's pretty much new episodes of the show but in stills.

One thing I'm glad that they did in the special was tone down Gaz a bit. Gaz during season 2 and in the comic was way too cruel.

I think Enter The Florpus actually covers some part of the comics before going into original material.

It covers the first issue pretty much beat for beat until the Dib reverts back to normal. Then it goes off. But if you’ve read the comics and knew about the lost episodes it takes a lot of those ideas and uses bits and pieces as well as some of the comics.

Def saw a lot from mopiness of doom in there, especially with Zim’s depression.

I was wondering whether or not Zim was really depressed or it was just an act to trick Dib?

Yeah. Specifically the depression is real, his willingness to be arrested is real, then Dib mentions the presentation for the bracelet and Zim immediately switches gears and starts planning world domination again while still playing the mope.

Me and the boys on the way to kill another demon god
Once again I watched one season of a show that is a reboot of a show/IP that either I or my wife enjoyed growing up. Previously it was The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and now it's Charmed. I think I liked it a bit more than Sabrina, but I was still off-put by some of it. I wonder if the success of Sabrina had something to do with the reboot's overall darker tone. I don't know much about the original series, but I do know it had its moments of horror mixed in with the usual late 90s com-dram shows had back in the day. For the first few episodes it seemed to start off like that, but then during one episode I nodded off, then woke up again where two of the characters were in hell, I think? which is roughly the point where I realized the show wasn't for me. I didn't finish it, but according to my wife it gets pretty twisted by the end.

Is this what shows are just always going to be like these days, or is this adaptation mentality exclusive to The CW shows and their ilk?

I marathoned through Documentary Now! and was thrown for a loop a bit when season 3 started because Armisen and Hader were no longer always the protagonists of the mockumentaries. The decision really paid off for Cate Blanchett's sendup of Maria Abramovich in particular.

So for anyone who watched the first two seasons of Handmaid’s Tale and really liked parts but were very frustrated by the lack of plot progression or circular nature of the plot (June repeatedly winding up back in Gilead and with the loathsome Waterfords, whether by her own choice or otherwise)...

Consider just watching the last 3 episodes or so of season 3 and skipping the rest. It’s a pretty reasonable way to go about it IMO.

The circular nature of season 1 wasn’t a bad thing. Season 1 was great. Season 2 just felt aimless.

For me 3 was a step up from the second season. At least things happen, but it’s also is a really frustrating watch with the way they just flush all of the waterfords character progression down the toilet out of nowhere.

Just watch the last 4 episodes, friend, if at all!

I think Hulu must feel somehow they've dropped the ball and the show has lost a lot of mojo in that it doesn't show up in its picks or even near the top of Hulu Originals.

American Factory was very surreal. If you thought corporate worship in the US was bad, China's on a new plane of existence. It kind of gives off the tone that US workers don't know how good they have it when it comes to working conditions, but at the same time showing how absolutely miserable all the workers are. I'm still stunned at what they have the CEO and some of the Supervisors saying on camera.

I got tired of more than two episodes straight, I feel like it's best in small doses.

But that was mostly because I got a little bored of seeing the same challenges in most rounds, only increasingly difficult; like Walk on Water, then Walk on Water with less guide lights, then Walk on Water but you have to hit two targets.

Spreading it out though, it's fun. I absolutely loved every time they showed a reaction shot of that guy with the gigantic shades.

Finished Anohana The Flower We Saw That Day (Netflix, English dub) Thursday. I'm not normally much into anime but holy poo poo I think it may be a contender for my favourite show ever of any genre. Got the waterworks going a lot of times and i bawled my eyes out straight through the final three episodes. Took me a couple of days of reflection to properly digest it too. If you're into coming of age, intimate and/or emotionally resonant shows definitely give this a watch. It's 11 episodes of 20 minutes each.

Also, another thing I watched in my current emotional binge is Hannah Gadsby's Nanette (also Netflix) which is a really thiught provoking and intimate take on a stand up routine.

If your specific flavor of anime is tearjerkers, I recommend Violet Evergarden, also on Netflix. After a couple episodes of setup, it becomes one emotional gut punch after the other, especially in the middle when the episodes are more self-contained and focused on the individual clients.

While we're talking about anime, I'd like to point out that Land of the Lustrous is pretty good. It's CG, and that's a dealbreaker for a lot of folks, but whatever complaints I have with the visuals is soothed over by the story and characterizations. It's a very light body-horror tale about living gemstones that are hunted by goo Buddhas from the moon.

Here's a three-minute sequence from early in the first episode that gives you a glimpse at the visuals and also sets up the core conflict between the clumsy, lackadaisical Phosphophyllite and her ten-foot tall teacher, who is at a loss to find a use for her.

The entire first season is streaming free on Amazon Prime. It's only twelve episodes and ends on a cliffhanger and there probably won't be a second season because no one watched it. Enjoy!
