Nación Lucha Libre , Alberto Del Rio and Chavo's promotion, has already stopped paying people and their announcer just left the promotion.

He is reasonably polite and professional while getting in a couple shots. He basically says he doesn't want to create any controversy about it but if Nacion Lucha Libre wants to be a serious promotion they need to respect the people who work for them and pay them the same they would as the luchadores. He calls out Del Rio a bit saying he needs to be honest and a man of his word and it sounds like Del Rio is trying to sell the whole thing as going off well to business partners while telling the backstage staff there's financial issues and he can't pay them.

"WWE saw something in him that made them put up with him for years"

There are a lot of a lot of times WWE fucks up, gives up on someone too easily or too early, doesn't give someone a fair chance to succeed, gets rid of a good talent, etc. It happens often enough you tend to look forward to what people will do outside of that environment more than any potential thing they could still do in it

But once in a blue moon there's a Del Rio or Enzo or Cass or Sandow or Aries, where you realize not only did they not miss out by shitcanning someone, if anything they gave them too long a leash/too many chances

there really isn't anything wrong with how WWE used Sandow in retrospect, but a lot of people thought he was chronically misused up until he jumped to TNA and uh opinions changed fast

It doesn't help that he completely dropped anything that people liked from his WWE run, shaved his beard and went on a weird MMA gimmick that was basically DOA.

Has he ever explained anywhere what made him make that choice?

Also his backup plan for all of it, as can be seen above, was the terrible Liberace gimmick he came up with that even modern WWE told him "no" to his face about using

That the Miz-dow gimmick was likely to be even more DOA, I assume? I mean it 100% screams comedy guy and if he wanted to parley his release into a main event push, he couldn't keep it.

It was supposed to be a one off but he got over so well he hijacked Miz's entire serious push into that gimmick. He embarrassed himself after that but WWE did nothing with a guy who got really over.

KungFu Grip

They tried to push him in a tag team as Macho Man impersonator with Curtis Axel as a Hulk Hogan impersonator even though Sandow's Macho Man impersonation sucked real bad. Then Hogan's sex tape and racism came out so it killed their gimmicks and the comedy midcard tag team push.

in retrospect it was a bad idea for Sandow to declare himself his own man when his only talent was in impersonation

quote:

Daniel Bryan spoke to Superluchas ahead of the WWE’s event in Colombia this past weekend. Bryan was asked about several Luchadors coming to WWE and cited Negro Casas and Blue Panther among his favorites, but believes they are too old for WWE with both in their late ’50s. Of the current generation, he mentioned Rush, Bandido, and Dragon Lee as ones that could succeed in the company but also brought up that the WWE already has Gran Metalik and used his name to plug 205 Live. It’s funny because Gran Metalik would be the cautionary tale you would use when mentioning other Lucha talent coming to WWE and where they could end up.
