I've been really getting into retro wave lately, but I'm very new to the genre. I've mostly been listening to Perturbator, Makeup and Vanity Set, Carpenter Brut, and Gunship. What should I definitely, absolutely be checking out? I'm looking for both heavy, driving stuff and more atmospheric stuff.

Check out SURVIVE for some atmospheric stuff, I would also recommend Gost, Dance with the Dead, Waveshaper, Daniel Deluxe, Tommy 86, Kick Puncher.

Magic sword, oscillian, John Carpenter for atmospheric stuff.

Irving Force, Judge Bitch, Mega Drive, Dan Terminus, and Master boot record for heavy/energy

Lazerhawk, Meteor, Mitch Murder, The midnight, FM84, and Dead Astronauts for everything in between.

There's so much more out there obviously but these cover a lot of styles, I think

Fear is the glue that holds society together. It's what makes people suppress their worst impulses. Fear is power.

And at the end of fear, oblivion.

That list pretty closely mirrors what I dig, and the main band you're missing that I love is The Midnight. Their closest comp would be Gunship, 80s-focused synths with sax and vocals and stuff that really runs the gamut from slower ballads to uptempo stuff that slaps with sax and guitar solos.

Their most recent album (Kids) is hit and miss, but almost everything off Days of Thunder, Endless Summer, and Nocturnal is good.

is there a separate thread for non-synthwave highfalutin experimental electronic music or is this it? i'm looking for stuff similar to the last 2ish years of Orange Milk Records releases. i'd call that vaporwave adjacent I s'pose because of the death's dynamic shroud connection. the sonic palette contains more FM/wavetable synthesis and windowsXP/vista-esque piano & found sounds and the song structures are usually bonkers. often it sounds like the electronic version of free jazz or weirder non-jammy prog. any other labels out there doing similar stuff?

People posted a lot of the good ones but I'll put in specific songs I like from said bands as an example from each. There's Hollywood Burns, Magic Sword, Timecop 1983/The Bad Dreamers, Lebrock, and Dance With The Dead. I'm also big on Starcadian, but I'm biased because he's super nice and hooked up a disabled friend of mine with a backstage meet up for their birthday.

Anyone seen the Midnight live? Seeing em in Portland in August with the wife. She's not too much into retrowave, but did dig some of their more poppy stuff like Gloria, Jason, America 2. Hoping they kinda go more that way than instrumental concept stuff.

Saw em in Asheville back in March. They were pretty good, though Crystalline got kinda ruined by two jackasses that started heckling them. Security got them out quickly, thankfully.

I'm surprised I haven't seen any of these albums posted here. Isidor released a new album which I think is his best so far (with Dark Night Genesis in second) and DEADLIFE released two new albums on one day (though one is very different than the rest of his work). All three are good!

Isidor:

DEADLIFE:

(SKEOR did the album art for all 3, and he also did DEADLIFE's Variations on the Resolve. He's got a really good style for synthwave stuff)
