my doc won’t let me leave in the fall unless ive said i have had my flu shot but I also have asthma so it can potentially be A Big Deal if i get the flu. he also makes sure to drill in my head to let him know asap if i think i have the flu so he can toss tamiflu at me immediately

it is a shame that the numbers are so hard to come by and compare, as this comes up now and then and it is always a bit of a puzzler that the us is so big on vaccinations against the flu. my home country does very little of the sort, except when i worked for a us company which kept insisting that we get vaccinated. i ascribed that to a cynical attempt to lower sick leave at the time, but it is apparently just broadly american.

universal healthcare vs. not makes it really hard to actually look at any statistics and see anything which is not more directly explainable by that however.

i have a kid in daycare so a flu shot to ward off all illness is like wearing a helmet in a demolition derby but i’m a doing it. also it’s free anyway

flu shots are pretty universally covered by insurance so its free money for providers.

getting the flu sucks, and it can be genuinely dangerous for a significant segment of the population

in europe? every place. it is a matter of seniors, and in a few cases some groups of kids.

which is sort of the point, it'd be interesting to see the numbers disentangled a bit (i.e. the us' being pretty poo poo for entirely unrelated reasons), to see the resulting outcomes.

for select groups yeah:
http://www.euro.who.int/en/health-topics/communicable-diseases/influenza/vaccination

more than most countries in europe do, but less than the general push the us appears to go for.

Notorious b.s.d. posted:

http://www.euromomo.eu/

but that holds in the us as well:

so it still needs some doing straightening out the statistics to see how much it actually helps.

your link is extra interesting as my home country is sweden, which only recommends vaccinations to people over 65 (and those of compromised health, nothing for children or even people in healthcare professions), with 2% of the <65 population vaccinated on average any given year, and swedens line on that chart is pretty flat over the year compared to e.g. the us one above.
