That’s actually part of why I was hesitant about Casino. My understanding is that the Goodfellas 4k is super underwhelming/bad.

But I figure I’ll return them if no good, but just did a cursory google search and it seems to be good.

I usually stick w Blu-Ray.com for reviews and whatnot. I like their site design and what they address in reviews. I’m by my no means a videophile but like to know I’m not contributing to lovely products.

I can't compare Casino to the Blu as I didn't own it, but I thought it looked solid and someone on their forum did a pretty good writeup about how they thought it was a good improvement. I'm never wow-ed by anything, so unless something is plain bad and I have a source to compare to, it's hard for me to say 'yes! this is the one!' mind.

Shaun of the Dead looked like it had a bit more detail and again seemed fine at least, but I don't think it went far beyond the Blu-Ray from memory of it.

Picked up the Cornetto Trilogy and Casino UHDs.

It wouldn't surprise me if Shaun is actually a new transfer instead of an upscale since it really looks fantastic. (The Life Aquatic, released the same year, had to get a new 4K transfer for its Blu-ray, which makes me think DIs of this vintage don't hold up). Hot Fuzz and The World's End are probably upscales, but still look great. I think Hot Fuzz has a little bit of noise reduction that was built into the DI since it varies from shot to shot.

Casino looks great, too. Though, it's a Super-35 film with a lot of soft focus and diffusion, so it's not going to be in the same league as a Panavision film. And I thought Goodfellas looked pretty good, but it's a dark film.

Not very good.

Shaun is an upscale (from the 2k DI) but has much better colour thanks to the HDR
Hot Fuzz looks like it's either been DNRd, or it's a shoddy filmout, or both.
I think World's End is the same deal as Shaun.

Have a look for yourself how much worse Hot Fuzz looks. It introduces chromatic aberration and blurs the image and applies a light blanket of noise to compensate. It looks like a lazy Lionsgate filmout.

The Goodfellas 4k is super good. A lot of people didn't have bright enough displays when it first came out and for some reason that reputation has stuck. It's a fantastic transfer.

Also the official reviews on blu-ray.com are garbage and should be ignored. Read the forum threads in the 4k section for more accurate information.

Per the email (Why aren't you on the VS mailing list already?), Tammy and the T-Rex is one of the "super secret" black friday Blu Rays, but we all know the cat is out of the bag on that one.

It looks like they're doing a flash pre-order for the secret Blus on September 19-20, so Tammy is included in that one.

Now if only they would figure out how to send me my damned spider beast from last Black Friday.

As far as I know there hasn't been an announcement about that. There probably will be one closer to the flash sale and/or Black Friday, but yeah, it's likely just a limited slipcase, and a normal edition will be available later.

I do hope it's an awesome slipcase like the one for Hell Comes to Frog Town

Unless I wasn't paying close attention it seems like they never annouce that when it's the case. I can't imagine them having such a big get as Tammy and the T-Rex and making it a strictly limited release. I just want to have my bases covered in case I can't get one during the pre-sale because it seems like it's going to be an "it" item.

Amityville: It's About Time is legit a really decent DTV horror film. I love the Amityville movies (minus the recent ones that have come out the last few years). Top notch trash. This is a good set IMO and I am pretty excited about it.

Considering I've only seen the original Amnityville and thought it was boring as hell, these at least sound like things happen in them, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Be warned that unlike laserdiscs, CEDs are generally going to have playback issues since the layer of silicone has dried up. Though, they're apparently pretty easy/cheap to repair since it's usually just belts that can be replaced or plastic gears that can be superglued back together. The discs also weigh a ton. I got a box with maybe 20 titles and it was like moving a giant concrete block.

The format only existed from 1981-1986, so they're all pan & scan for post-1950s films except for a few exceptions* and it's basically VHS-quality.

*The Long Goodbye, Woodstock, King of Hearts, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Manhattan, and Amarcord were the only titles released letterboxed. In fact, Holy Grail even has the slightly extended cut and the original trailer.

Apple Corps already confirmed Let It Be is coming in 2020 for the 50th anniversary - both the original film and Peter Jackson's new doc working from the same 60+ hours of footage. Sounds like the theatrical release of new doc will be in May and the video release later in the year.

Don't forget the new ultimate Abbey Road set is coming at the end of the month - while no actual video features, there's a Blu-ray disc containing the new Dolby Atmos mix (in addition to 192Khz LPCM stereo and 96Khz DTS-HD MA 5.1 mixes).

Criterion Stuff

Non-Movie Closet Stuff

Note 1: There's three small shelves not pictured which are my roommates tiny collection. Most of it still DVD.

Note 2: Yes I own both loving Boondock Saints movies, I got them right when they first came out which was years ago, I know they suck

Note 3: I don't own Godzilla 2014 cause it's not on loving 4k yet.

Note 4: Anything I own twice is mainly there due to special features disparity. For example I still have the DVD of the first Terminator because none of the subsequent releases has had all, or any for that matter, of the special features on it. When I trade up in format or for a new scan I usually give away my old discs to friends or donate them to a library. I used to sell them to places like Half Price Books but you get so little money now that it's not even worth it.
