got those happy feet

I got multiple robo calls today that spoofed my own number. The caller ID just said "voicemail." Was it a buggy auto dialer or were they hoping I'd be intrigued? :iiam:

None of the calls left a message.

Don't you tell me my business again.

Thanks for the links but these threads actually somehow suck.

I thought there'd actually be more to chew on with those topics.

I've only been to a casino a couple of times and I don't get the attraction. The whole scene was just depressing as hell from my angle and I don't get the allure at all.

Eh, for most it's probably that casinos are fun. It isn't just the gambling; you do have people going into casinos knowing full well that they're going to lose money in the process but in exchange they get to drink a lot, goof off, catch a show, and have insane fever dreams of what they'd do with the money if they actually hit the jackpot. Gambling is fun and exciting; the trick really is to never bet money you can't afford to lose and expect to come out behind. If you do make money great but it's important to know when to walk away.

All that does is make it unregulated. Pushes it underground and allows people to run actual scams dressed up as gambling.

Solution seems pretty standard for vice, tax the poo poo out of it and fund awareness campaigns and addiction help

Not going to happen anytime soon under capitalism though

No, but the existence of alcoholics doesn’t mean we should ban alcohol, in my opinion. Mentioning that some (most) people can gamble in moderation is just being used as a counter example to the posters who are trying to equate ‘you can try to maybe win money, but the odds aren’t good’ to Nigerian prince scams.

Gambling addiction is real and damaging, but there are many, many people who can go, have fun, and leave without any problems.

Though I will admit more money spent on addiction treatment programs is absolutely a net social good.

Nah, it's super weird to be a casual casino gambling fan in here, it always sounds weird, and it's weird as hell looking in from the outside.

It's always gonna be weird seeing a subset of people insist that the (objectively depressing) innards of a casino full of sad old ladies in the act of losing their life savings is actually a fun innocent place to be, if only approached with self-imposed limits that you're definitely disciplined enough for, unlike those other people.

Gambling is dumb and casinos and game developers have finely tuned the experience to exploit human psychology.

Far worse than those, though, is mobile gaming. At least in a casino can cash out any time and you even have a chance of leaving with some money.

Mobile gaming is a hell of a lot worse, with completely opaque odds, zero regulations, and an incredibly friction-free experience. Buy an extra try at this level for 1 gem? Pay $0.99 for 1 gem? click, done. And with notifications they can pester you all. the. time.

At least with casinos you have to be there, and pull money out of an ATM.

I agree with not only the casinos, but all forms of gambling. Knew someone that would literally go to her tribe's casino every paycheck, and she would proceed to piss away her money and then go get scratch tickets. I absolutely hate the way gambling is advertised, because its designed to give every patron the idea that they could possibly win. She would get angry because I refused to play into the idea that somehow I would get the jackpot if I continued putting in money. The odds are just incredibly outrageous, and many people get addicted to that chance of winning.

Food companies do similar things to get us to eat more.

But yeah mobile gaming is getting up to some really lovely stuff that I imagine is going to lead to regulation sooner rather than later. Especially since loot boxes are a horrible mess and they're deliberately preying on children in entirely too many cases.

As to addiction "we should ban it because people get addicted" is nonsense; people can get addicted to pretty much anything. Better to regulate things to minimize the damage they cause instead of banning it and handing it over to organized crime. Meanwhile you fund addiction services. Addiction itself is a complicated issue that you don't solve by just saying "ban all the addictive things."

It's lead to some (relatively mild) regulation in Japan already, and I can't remember if the EU already passed or was still working on a similar thing. Mobile gaming is absolutely tuned to addict you to gambling though. It gives me some level of amusement to glacially outpace some of those games where I do my ten minutes or whatever and I'm out of my daily crystals, welp, see you tomorrow game, but I am fortunate in that I have been a gamer for a long time and can recognize lovely design when I see it, and gambling doesn't immediately tickle the reward place in my brain.

I can't believe Peter Popov, one of the faith healers that James Randi exposed, is back on TV doing what he always did and people still buy it. I listened to a conned podcast that covered him, Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart and god drat I hate ALL these motherfuckers so much.

EDIT:

Also, I have another one. Toner cartridges.

I can't print or copy anything at home as it stands until I replace my cyan ($40) cartridge on my home printer. This despite replacing all 4 toner cartridges on it less than a year ago and ONLY printing B&W things on it since. Customer support tried to lecture about the nuances of CMYK and that it still uses cyan ink despite the fact I have worked in printing for 30+ years. Ok, then let me print it with just the black. Grayscale.

There is ZERO reason any of my CMY ink cartridges should be empty or even low. None. They want $40 (1/5 of what I paid for the whole printer) for ONE cartridge I have specifically told my printer not to use. Why even have a B&W setting? I've bought off brand toner for it and, what do you know, the machine is smart enough to know I paid less for the ink but not smart enough to NOT use color ink when I am printing out a tax form, some email I want a hard copy of or copying my tenant's lease in B&W.

Pretty sure there was a class action lawsuit about this very thing a few years ago but I can't find it.

Still can't get over "customer support" trying to explain to me how offset printing and color management works though. OK, fine. Print it WITHOUT the cyan then. Black and white like I want.

Buy a b&w laser printer and throw your inkjet into the trash where it belongs. It costs 25% more up front for the laser, the toner doesn't dry out, and each toner cartridge lasts in the thousands of pages, and it's still only $60-80 for a third-party refill.
