dont forget that they show the villain being a secular muslim frenchman in a paris banlieue and then one time he gets arrested by the racist french police for protecting his brother and goes to prison and when he comes out of prison he's magically now a jihadi and that change is never explained except for a vague sense of "oh i guess french prisons are full of muslim extremists and therefore every arab who enters a french prison becomes a jihadi"

i haven't gotten that far yet. that's stupid. suleiman carrying a grudge from his family getting blown up in lebanon in 83 makes way more sense, because that i can sympathize with

episode 3 of jack ryan is the most dogshit evil propaganda i've ever seen

victor, the drone pilot, starts the episode by murdering an innocent man on a motorcycle, for which his partner riot grrl gives him a dollar. he has a bunch of these dollars, all numbered for each kill. he goes to vegas to try and lose it all in a series of crazier bets that wind up winning big. he is taken back to a hotel room by what appears to be a married couple. victor has sex with the woman while the man watches and then the man beats him before they leave

in the b-plot of the episode, hanin, the wife of the terrorist suleiman, is trying to run with her kids. suleiman finds out but she escapes with her two daughters anyways. suleiman finds out and sends hanin's uncle fathi and this creepy soldier who was hitting on his daughter yazidi to get them back. the two men track them to a public market and begin chasing them, while victor and riot grrl watch through their predator drones. yazidi captures the daughters and fathi tries to think of a way to stop him, but yazidi kills him. yazidi then drags hanin off to rape her, and the drone pilot victor goes against orders, and when hanin momentarily escapes he blows up yazidi with a missile.

hanin gets into fathi and yazidi's truck, looks to her kids and says "see, i told you god would protect us"

victor leans back in his chair, obviously happy with himself for doing something good

this show is disgusting

wait until you see what the drone pilot does with all that money!!!

i hatewatched it like a year ago so i may be forgetting some details but iirc they forget about that grudge and show him living a normal life in paris and then whoops suddenly he's a jihadi again because french people were racist to him

in christopher nolans first big movie memento a major plot point revolves around an insurance agent proving that a guy has a mental illness rather than a physical one so that the insurance company can avoid paying for his health care

i bring this up because warrens new health care plan has failed to realize that even hacky gimmick writers can see the obvious hustle involved in treating mental health differently than physical health

When I was in Middle School I started reading Tom Clancy books that were in my classroom's library and like every other war obsessed dork I thought he was great because of how much detail he'd go into describing weapons porn. Anyway I remember reading a Clancy book where the main plot thread was that there was a French Nazi conspiracy to make white people racist by producing racist video games. So it's funny that now we live in a world where Tom Clancy games are just fascist.

I can't find the title for it now, but I know it existed because Jack Ryan had a bit role in it.

was it one of the licensed novels written by other people? it sounds like some garbage from the Op-Center or Net Force series (wiki browsing suggests maybe Games of State?)

The Sum of All Fears movie was accidentally accurate in that as soon as it seems like they're on top, the international right wing conspiracy starts backstabbing each other.

Yeah it's Games of State. I searched for 'video game' in Google Books, and the French Nazi game developer is Gerard Dominique.

Sorry to Bother You was overhyped because explicitly left wing movies never get made or screened, but it still stands up on its own merits. I still think the scene where all the commodities in his apartment literally transform into luxury versions as a practical effect is one of the best scenes in recent years.

late twentieth century general fiction was shockingly bad and its honestly not that hard to see how harry potter and young adult fiction was able to displace it because just about everyone was doing nutty clancy stuff

like jon grisham is a name youd generally regard as boilerplate and even he dipped into horribly aged storylines about judges running extortion rings around gay personal ads or the cia head playing kingmaker in the presidential race because the soviets are coming back as militarist whackos who undermine free and fair elections

I first saw sorry to bother you when I was drinking with a friend and I loving loved it. It's straight up funny and also layered in a bunch of ways, way beyond just gently caress capitalism but in how it makes people into parodies of themselves. I love how the revolution comes for reasons that are never high minded but like, cause of the relationships people have with one another. You can tell boots has actually lived the stuff in the movie it's very true to life even while also being surreal lol

I just watched it again cause you guys were all "it's great it just doesn't live up to expectations" and I thought maybe I was just remembering being drunk with a friend. that's not the case I still think it's basically perfect. thank you for reminding me to watch it again!
