I have put about 16 beats together and am planning on releasing them as a "beat tape" once I finish the mixing/mastering. I wanted to share one of them for some feedback on the mix, but didn't know if this was the best place to share it. There doesn't seem to be a thread in ML for reviewing tracks that gets any traffic but let me know if you'd rather see this kinda thing elsewhere.

There are some things I think could be improved on this mix, but not sure if I am being objective since I have heard it so many times.

I think the overall mix sounds pretty good, especially the drums and bass. My critique would be about the piano and toms sounding a little too quantized for my tastes.

That's funny because the piano is my friend playing live and I didn't quantize it at all, haha. I did move a couple notes that sounded off with the rest of the notes so perhaps that made it sound a little too quantized. I could play around with the swing a bit and could definitely add some variation to the tom roll. Thanks man!

In preparation for releasing a full project of beats, I needed to submit at least one track through Distrokid so they could create an artist profile for me on streaming services. That allows me to then use Spotify for Artists and submit my stuff to playlists. I was planning on releasing this beat I made, but am having some second thoughts because this is what I do (second guess everything). I am trying to balance putting out a quality release with spending too much time on this one and not just moving on. This is one of the first beats I made where the music is all original (no samples). I played and recorded the piano, keys, and electric bass on this myself and I think my concern is that it is apparent that I am at best an amateur player of all three.

Edit: Would like people's thoughts on asking for feedback in this thread. I personally don't mind but want to hear what other people think and if that belongs in ML somewhere.

I really appreciate this man, thanks. I know I am far from the only artist to experience crippling self-doubt at times, but the encouragement means a lot. I went and checked out a bunch of your recent stuff and I am really impressed. You have a great ear for melodies and harmonies and the mixes sound really full, but with a nice range of dynamics.

The trouble I am having on mixing is getting my kick drum to knock without it just redlining all over the place. When I look at my waveforms, the kick is usually peaking a few dB higher than anything else, but that seems to be the only way I can get it to hit even close to as hard as my reference tracks.

First, you flatter me. Thank you very much. I sincerely appreciate anyone that compliments me and I am humbled by it.

Second, I swear by the iZotope suite of mixing/mastering products. I have the Ozone 8 Advanced with Neutron 3 Advanced. I cannot say enough good things about this software. It's made mixing and mastering easy with the assistants, and go from there with the sound you're looking for. Granted, it's not cheap, but the results, to ME have paid for itself many times over.

Edit: About the self doubt. Don't. You do YOU, that's what makes it special. I try to just do my own thing and if people like it, they like it. If they don't, well, OK it's not their style. Being unique is what makes you special. Being you is all about releasing your thoughts and your sounds. People either like it or not. You will be surprised at the responses you get.

I have some tracks I've done that I was thinking it's an OK song, but not my best work, and then I'm surprised when I get an email telling me it's their favorite song! The ones I think are great, don't get the response I was expecting. I've learned to just do ME and not worry about how people hear or perceive it. I love all my songs, but not everyone loves them. That's OK.

Don't be afraid to release something you are unsure or self doubting. You never know how people will hear it and what clicks for them. Everyone is different. My wife isn't a fan of what I do, and I had to do a dance album for her, which is way out of my wheelhouse, but I pulled it off somehow and is my top selling album to date! Go figure.

The point is, just do what you love, put it out there and let the masses digest it however they want. You know you did your best and leave it at that.

A good example of something I did which has gotten a response I was not expecting is: https://soundcloud.com/tom-pellegrino-146151417/rhymes-with-orange

I love it but I never thought in my wildest dreams it would get the plays it has. It has one of my highest play counts on Soundcloud with almost 16k plays so far.

And that dance album I made? https://soundcloud.com/tom-pellegrino-146151417/time-to-go

This track has the highest plays on soundcloud ever out of all my songs. Almost 52K plays. I don't even DO dance music. I had to really dig deep to do this album. I still don't think any of them sound like a "real" dance track, but maybe that's the allure.

Wow, that's a hell of a loving edit!

This is wonderful. Expertly done jazz-hop vibes. Reminds me a lot of this guy Joey Pecoraro. You should absolutely do a full instrumental album in this vein. I'd love to hear some of the wonderful grit on your drum sounds in that piano. Maybe tape saturation?

Thanks a lot man! I really appreciate the kind words. Its funny you mention adding some grit to the piano, because I remember trying a couple distortion plugins and not being satisfied with what I was getting and then kinda leaving it the way it was. I am going to experiment with some tape saturation on a few other tracks that are in the same vein that I plan to put on an instrumental album.

I checked out the first few tracks on your album and really enjoyed it. Went through a big Sufjan phase in High School and this brought be right back to that. Going to check out the rest when I get a chance this weekend.

Tomorrow I am heading to a studio in Oakland, CA to finish producing and mixing a few funk/soul tracks I have been working on with an artist friend of mine. Can't wait to share some of them because I am really happy with how they are shaping up.

I guess I'd call it post-rock but it has elements of noise, drone, dark ambient, and probably some other stuff but I suck at genres. I'm approaching it as a soundtrack without a movie - think mid 90s Swans or Godspeed You.

Feel free to drop a critique on the composition or mixing - thanks for listening!
