He Who Fights Monsters is amazing. Here are two recent chapter titles with brief summaries: Chapter 45: So Much For Atheism - MC meets his first god in the town square Chapter 46: Blatant Manipulation - MC talks to his first god I'm especially fond of the chapter 46 title. The actual content of the chapter makes the god seem completely reasonable and way nicer than they need to be. They help the MC out significantly and don't ask for anything in return.

So I just mostly caught up with a ton of Ward. A bunch of stuff happened and folks died (I still have one or two chapters to go until I'm fully caught up, but I'm wondering if someone else is still going to die, since this "option" should involve two Breakthrough deaths and it's not looking like Byron is going to die from his injuries. Possibly Sveta, since I think it's still unclear what long-term affect being hit by that "death touch" guy may have had. Also it seems like Teacher was basically "a bad person on the right side" and trying to do a good thing in a selfish way that ensured he had power and control. The perspective from Saint's friend was actually pretty understandable and it's kinda hard to doubt the logic of working for Teacher when the alternative is the world ending again. It was also kinda neat seeing how Teacher had to genuinely struggle with figuring out how to deal with Contessa. I'm not sure what to think regarding Dinah. I'm actually more inclined to trust Contessa than Dinah, because we've at least had non-zero insight into Contessa's experiences and potential mindset, while we know nothing about where Dinah is coming from (and, as Dinah herself admitted, it's deeply fishy that she's unwilling to submit to a thinker scan)

He Who Fights With Monsters is rad. Isekai LitRPG with a bit of Xianxia, but non-stereotypical enough to keep it interesting, especially the protagonist's personality. Like in ch. 35 when he challenges the asshats defacing the clinic. This kind of confrontation is pretty common in LitRPG's, showing off how righteous the protagonist is, but in any other one the thugs would've drastically underestimated the protag, and then gotten their poo poo kicked in. Cue massive justice boner. Instead, Jason gets curbstomped, and while it's portrayed as possibly foolhardy for him to have done that, it's not portrayed as wrong, as a mistake. I like that. If the protagonist only stands up for what's right when he can win, it means less.

He could have used his essence abilities and quite possibly won, but he points out that would have been like pulling a knife in a fist fight, and very likely would have gotten higher ups in the church involved. That sort of escalatory spiral is super common in Xianxia as a way to keep pressure on the protagonist even while their powerlevel skyrockets, but he steps right around it.

The insane thing about He Who Fights With Monsters in general is that the characters are written like real people instead of what you would expect to be in a cultivation/litrpg/whatever you want to call this kind of story. Let's be honest, web serials in general kind of suck. Theres hundreds of these sorts of stories that all follow a very predictable arc and it's so refreshing to read one where the writer apparently realizes that the setting of a world where magic is real is the appeal, and not the honorable student destroying evil, or the genre-savvy sociopath and/or borderline moron that's really common in the western version of these kinds of things

So you get to enjoy the whole "'organically' exploring a well-written fantasy setting" aspect (that is kinda uniquely made possible by web serials, since they don't need to tell full narrative arcs in book-sized pieces) without all the nonsense. It makes the protagonist strong/important enough to be involved with the big players without making them feel inappropriate to the setting.

So, I've been writing a web serial for almost nine months now, called Katalepsis. It's an urban fantasy story / lesbian supernatural soap opera, with a little bit of a horror coating. I didn't want to link it here until I was certain I'd be sticking with it, so here it is. New chapters currently every Saturday, though I'm trying to build up to twice a week instead. I'm not an incredible writer or anything, and I guess the story can get a little grisly at times, so it might not be to everyone's taste. If anybody does check it out, I sincerely hope you enjoy it.

Really gotta say I really dig your characterization of Raine so far. In a lot of respects I really dislike her, but it all seems completely intended. Evelyn even calls her out on her poo poo when we first meet her too. The best way I have to put it, is that she doesn't seem to really think of others and how they will react and feel about stuff? Not in a mean way, but in a thoughtless way. Like, she pushes Heather to tell her about her hallucinations on the hunch that this is actually occult related, without really considering that maybe she doesn't like talking about it. Or when she blabbed all that poo poo to Evelyn, and generally that entire first meeting with Evelyn. I appreciate how everyone acted in that scene.

I ran into that the other week. At first I was a bit put off by the premise of "mentally ill character is actually just seeing the Hidden Truth," which I've run into way too many times and is often terrible, but the story worked pretty well. Certainly well enough for me to binge it and add these useless lesbians to my rss reader. I'm still thinking they should just trust the eye, though. It didn't mean to hurt her, and I'm sure they can work something out. It seems cool and helpful!

I'm through the first two arcs, and it's a pretty fun read. ^^ I don't know if it's at all helpful, but here are some random stream-of-consciousness reactions and remarks I wrote down while going through it: My impression of Raine went through a weird trajectory- I initially wrote her off as a manic pixie dream-girl esque fantasy fulfillment thing, but I'll happily concede that that was mostly inaccurate since her entire character is apparently built around intentionally striving to be the cool awesome fantasy girlfriend for other people, even when that's usually a terrible idea. That having been said, even though her kinda-sorta relationship with Heather is cute I am incredibly distrustful of her, and my expectation is for her to either secretly have been a terrible person all along, or for her to end up having tons of messed-up skeletons in her closet. I think that expectation is largely conditioned by her being absurdly awesome and friendly compared to even normal people, which presents as a really weird red flag when the three other characters we've seen a lot of have all been super-messed up and dysfunctional sorts. I'm still having trouble pinning down Evelyn's voice. If you were to give me a line or physical reaction out of context I could probably tell you if Raine or Heather said it, but Evelyn is a bit of a blur. I suspect this is largely because her mood swings and tendency to obfuscate her actual personality with learned/rehearsed behavior means that her personality can deviate wildly from scene to scene or even sentence to sentence, which is logically fine, but it's still a bit disorienting. I think the bit in the library after they saw the Eye was the best example of this- when Evelyn had her half-breakdown when Heather came to chat and wasn't mad, I genuinely struggled to picture what her affect or body language was like from sentence to sentence. (Note: writing characters in a consistent voice is super-duper hard, especially when it's a bipolar weirdo person with issues, so I'd honestly not sweat it.) My favorite scenes are consistently the ones focusing on interpersonal interactions and dumb soap opera/slice of life stuff, followed semi-closely by the Maisie plotline and distantly by figuring out what the Eye wants. The cults/werewolves/university stuff is less engaging to me, although that might just be down to personal taste or the fact that they haven't had much time in the spotlight. It did feel a bit weird that multiple friend-kidnapping murder cults are operating in town, and they're all just like "Eh, yeah, so we have a cult problem- just don't go anywhere without an armed escort and it's no big deal," and Heather kinda shrugs and goes along with it. All in all I had a lot of fun reading, so thanks for being a cool writer person and sharing a neat story with us!

More concrete thoughts on it now that I'm more than half awake: I expected to get pretty loving sick and tired of Heather's issues, but then she magically started to make progress on them just in time. This ended up being a common pattern throughout the story, with plot elements consistently being resolved right around when the lack of resolution would have become tiresome, which is a nice change of pace from most web serials. Calling them disaster lesbians is sorta unfair. They go through the brief period of "does this girl who is blatantly flirting with me reciprocate my feelings????" but then they talk about it and move onto just being a couple who are super into each other. The characters are mostly great. I like the whole flow of "Raine is either the magical perfect girlfriend here to save the MC or an abusive predator" to "oh she's more of a well-meaning rear end in a top hat" to realizing that the criticisms people give of her are actually kinda true but incomplete, and Raine is actually a reasonably well-rounded character that can't just be summed up in a caricature or two. Lozzie's the only character so far that's just made me go eh, but I guess she hasn't had much screen time. I think one of the big successes of the story is that a lot of the plot beats are kicked off by characters doing something stupid, but I never go "augh why would you do that?" and instead it's something where it'd feel out of character for them not to do the stupid thing. Reading about Heather puking every other page does get to be a bit much. Also I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be concluding that she must have some sort of magical healing thing going on to not be dead or at least horribly malnourished?
