Let's say the Crobber gets abducted by space aliens who want him to make a bad movie as an example of what not to do. They also have your family members hostage and make you take over running Robert's Space Industries.

How the gently caress do you turn it into something resembling a legit company?

Okay let's assume the whale money is sufficient and is gonna keep coming in.

First we get a whole bunch of nerds in a room. No not star citizen backers they can sit outside while the adults talk about how to repair their playground. We put an immediate halt on introducing any new gameplay features and schmooze the whales into a monthly patreon esque donation.

This big room of nerds then painstakingly goes through the list of promised ships and tries to concrete over the big gameplay problems. We decide which ships precisely represent our fast craft and how much of a threat they should be expected to be to our larger ships. We fix missiles being broken and try to consider how we might balance missile-defense in a way that feels even slightly fun and slightly fair. Once everything has been sorted into niches like 'fastest ship but no guns', 'pretty fast ship decent guns low health', 'equally fast ship super good gun incredibly low rate of fire', 'Big ship carrier with low armor but can cloak', 'big ship carrier that can fight back but only accurate against other big ships', 'massive armored dreadnought that has no sensors so if it's not protected by smaller ships you can sneak on and blow it up from inside' etc etc. Obviously these game mechanics need to be fixed as well. Team fortress 2 will be looked at as a balance inspiration in which we try to give new players an equal chance to contribute or even excel by offering items and ships to them that actually work for their intended roles even if they aren't necessarily the most specialized tools for specific combat roles. Once we sort out the fact that the gameplay design makes the game literally unplayable if you aren't a mega-whale we can get a team playing the actual game and working on flight mechanics that feel like with skill, muscle memory and some foresight you can avoid damage and turn engagements in your favor.

The fact that cryengine is totally inappropriate for all of this is just one of those facts of life and switching engines will literally only make all of this more untenable. The massive universe simulator is being dropped entirely for what will initially start as 48 person servers and eventually we'll see about propping that up to 62.

The physics of being inside a ship inside a ship will be handled the way historically it's been handled, we'll just cheat. You're in an instance all to yourself in an interior designed to replicate being in your ship but actually you aren't at all because interacting physics grids are loving nuts. Maybe if we ever get this shitpile into a true 1.0 status and are on the market as a legitimate game we'll take another look at it. Maybe.

Squadron 42 is canceled and the mocap will all be thrown in the loving dumpster. Except mop guy. He did nothing wrong so he can stay.

Land claims will be handled the same way city of heroes handled its guild-headquarters. Everybody goes to a little teleportation place where they can buy and outfit an interior space as they see fit. Later down the line maybe we do pvp raids but we've got to get the fundamentals done first.

The non combat ships will need a niche. I'm thinking money multipliers. Combat is fun so it should be happening no matter how lucrative it actually is. Maybe we implement some kinda cosmetic loot drop system or something for engaging in it if players get too lovey dovey. Noncombat roles should be about getting loving rich and there should be huge rewards for operating them, decent rewards for defending them and slightly better rewards for attacking them. Growing plants in your little geodesic dome should make you the equivalent of a drug dealer and you need to keep your rv geodesic dome hidden from the space cops and hostile players.

Ground combat we just literally rip off several other successful franchises. That tank or whatever the gently caress it was will be given the ability to plant itself in one position and fire a salvo into space that can 1 shot drat near anything and can kill any one ship with two shots, at the cost that the target obviously has to be in orbit around the planet and also your tank lights up both literally and on the sensors in a huge KILL ME sign to encourage fighter escorts for both parties when engaging in planet-space combat.

Wank pod animation is removed. Player position is tracked and you start the game where you were last standing barring getting blowed up or something. Players who log out disappear because prisoner mechanics are stupid. If we really want players to put up with being kidnapped/arrested we will look toward space station 13 for inspiration. We'll try to allow for prison escapes and crew mutinies and such.

Let me know if there's anything else in this shitshow I've forgotten. Procedural planets probably need to stay in but time will be spent hand sculpting things to do/visit on them. Procedural animals are out until we finish literally every other thing I suggested we might work on post release. You go to planet alpha and you pick up goats. You take them to the geodesic dome and process the goats into drugs. You sell the drugs. All star citizen development will be centered around this new focus on goat fidelity.

Their technical debt is insurmountable. Few, if any, of the promises made in the last decade can be kept. Even if one kept the art assets, they'll almost surely have to be completely rethought on a conceptual level as to their role in a clean-sheet implementation because what they have now is not merely impossible but also inherently contradictory and incoherent.

The first thing that has to be done is to sit down and say what the game is not. Years of promising everything to everyone makes any attempt at digging from under this mountain an act of futility. Make a concise design doc and work from there. That's the hardest conversation to have, finally explaining that no one is going to create a universe simulator that does everything for everyone.

Well, funny you should say that, because in the recent interview with the devs they actually said they had thrown out all the old design documents, which is funny as gently caress considering backers used to point to those as to things they were going to get.

I guess mixing drinks for NPCs and selecting movies for them to watch is no longer on the cards.

I wonder if the next time i point to that the backer i'm discussing with will triumphantly declare CIG are no longer doing that and the old docs are gone, so checkmate goonie, even though people used to harp on about how great it was that they would be able to do that.

Turn the game into an online card collecting game ala Artifact.

Just rip off Elite Dangerous' ship modules thing and have them change stats around a little in the initial pass. If devtime and budget stretches after release you could have ships be a modular series of connected rooms and then let ship modules change what rooms are where or something and sell that as DLC.

Thanks for this. I never looked at any of the kickstarter stuff.

anyone remember the Battlefield Upgrade Kits?

They just took a bog standard mechanic that, apparently, they had already promised to put in the game and sold it as a special feature of the Vanguard and iirc just the vanguard.

Oh except you had to pay real money to get them.

Then, later, they realized this was incredibly stupid and deprecated the whole idea of having a special pony BUK mechanic just for one ship, and that resulted in endless discussion and angst and 'clarifications'.

They (one clever guy) figured it out, then promptly had to trash it when the other devs couldn't work with it, so now there's a flight model below all the stuff, BUT you can override it and assign any number to any ship as you see fit, which completely breaks said model and makes it pointless.

The writing is terrible the grammar is terrible the sentence and paragraph construction are horrid. ANd someone gets paid to do this.

First paragraph is trying to cram way too much info into each sentence like somehow they're rationed. I'll forgive the last sentence since it somehow has to hide the fact that you won't get poo poo for this free marketing work.

Second is kind of OK, it's hard to punch up "We showed you some caves, you can see here" but...

Third is passable I suppose, though the "straight from the horse's mouth" part is completely unnecessary.

They really need to decide if their shows should be italicized or not.

I agree, the tone of the entire enterprise is "scrappy underdog startup" company if you try to hold them to account for over $300 million dollars and nothing to show, but they seamlessly flip to "multinational studio headed by mastermind visionary" when you ask what the gently caress a scrappy startup group thinks they're doing taking on impossible technical debt and insane promises. Nah, no one's ever tamed that mess. Here are some bits and pieces though:

Some senior leavers in 2014-2016:

  • Dan Tracy - Lead Tech Designer- Feb 2013 - Apr 2014
  • Eric Peterson - President of Prod & Dev - Jun 2012 - Nov 2014

  • Jason Hutchins - Snr Prod - Oct 2014 - Jan 2016
  • Michael Barclay - Lead Level Designer - Jan 2014 - Oct 2016

Here's a broader list from the mid 2016

Some general recent stuff:

Agent on some recent leavers in 2018:

quote:

and like a bunch more people (several dozen) but I'm not going to sit here and type out all their poo poo gently caress that

DigitalPenny reckons Linkedin premium confirms their staffing claims but suggests 3x the turnover & a much higher art-to-tech ratio than other studios.

They don't seem to have a lead facial animator at Derby UK since the guy that set up the studio left.
