Nothing like a replica wheel manufacturer to make you look like you care about your car.

The old Mazda323Performance forum was amazing but the original site owners took it down, club Protege seems to be interesting in the older cars (BF/BG) but gets progressively worse as you get into the BJ/BH stuff. There isn't much BF activity, most GTXs are garage queens or well-worn stage rally cars anymore. I was about to scrap the GTX I bought from Mike @ Road Race Engineering like a decade ago, but how many rust-free GTX shells are left at this point? So it sits, like 5th in line project-wise, after the turbo 323 Wagon, GTX #5, Daihatsu Rocky, and Hijet.

um excuse me posted:Nothing like a replica wheel manufacturer to make you look like you care about your car. That's one way to be a snob. Personally, I'd like something a bit different from the stockers, and winter is a thing here. Meaning, I'll keep stock wheels for winter and put on a different set for the warmer months. (At probably $100 for tire change over, 2x a year..., new wheels will pay for themselves before tire replacements are needed). And I happen to like the way those look, so that's my plan. *shrug*

Replica wheels are often made using inferior manufacturing techniques without compensating for strength in the design. People can get hurt and lose thousands. gently caress replica manufacturers. Now you can get decent wheels that aren't made by lovely companies which speaks volumes about your ability to research things and general decision making ability because boy there are thousands of ways to buy wheels that look nice, are strong, and don't cost a ton. um excuse me fucked around with this message at 17:02 on Sep 16, 2019 |

um excuse me posted:Replica wheels are often made using inferior manufacturing techniques without compensating for strength in the design. People can get hurt and lose thousands. gently caress replica manufacturers. Absolutely. And to be fair, I may not have been clear based on what I posted above. Mine is 100% going to be a street car. As cool as that racing team is, and what they're doing/did, there is no room for modifying my family hauler in such a way as to take it onto a race track. For better or worse, it's just pipe-dream material for those of us with limited transportation choices and limited enthusiast materials to consume for said transportation appliances. In this instance, replica wheels are a-ok and budget friendly for the intended use case.

I was under the impression that each wheel design had to pass a set of tests in order to be sold legally... Is this not the case in the US?

I should have said durability, not necessarily strength. Aluminum has no fatigue limit. It will fail at any cyclical load, no matter how small, if there are enough cycles. Guess what kind of loading wheels in motion are? That's right, your wheels will eventually start to crack. The weaker they are, the sooner they'll crack. Especially when you consider a forged chemistry vs cast. So while a wheel may test load limits and replicas will pass, they are still inferior.

So wheels sold in the US aren't required to meet any sort of standards?

um excuse me posted:You are the solution to your problem. Heh, oh irony. Wheels from discount tire are just fine for a family hauler street car, period. Admittedly, I'd take an oem wheel over these since used are cheap but not many options locally and cheap is champ for winter wheels. I like these, they look ridiculous on a van and the brakes will look silly behind them. Suburban Dad fucked around with this message at 22:10 on Sep 16, 2019 |

Nope. 4wd and it has so much traction i've never even had it wheelspin, depsite having almost 500lb/ft. Great fun to drive though, and super comfy and quiet for cruising. Not sure how much longer i'll own it due to work killing overtime.

His loaner is either another Giulia or a Stelvio so he doesn't mind too much. Would be tough to get a loaner 4cyl if you're used to the Quadrifoglio though.
