so as a point of comparison, i happened to see the original rocky last week (which i hadn't watched in some years) and the scene where he goes on a date with adriene and coerces her into his apartment and forces himself onto her was massively uncomfortable to watch. it's definitely not something that should have been glorified when it was new, but obviously social norms were different and it was more socially acceptable to be a creepy predator towards women back then.

is 30 rock bad like that, where there's genuinely objectionable stuff in it that shouldn't have been cool even when it was new, or is it more cringeworthy retrospection where knowing what we know now about the world, the show wasn't half as clever and subversive as it appeared to be? i feel like 30 rock and parks & rec are both the same kind of vapid obama-era liberal fantasy world, but if there's really lovely stuff in there that everybody just ignored before that could certainly change my opinion on it.

having rewatched it recently I think it's the latter and it's not nearly as cringeworthy as parks and rec was (even at the time), though the more overt political commentary tends to be some of the weaker material on the show

the stuff the show incorporates that people might find genuinely objectionable (i.e. Jenna and Tracy trying to do a race/gender swap, Pete having sex with his sleeping wife, Jack imitating Tracy's extended family in a therapy session) is universally (as far as I noticed) done with full awareness of that fact - execution also matters a lot, for example imagine how disastrous something like this scene might have been on a different show

e: tbh the part of the show that's going to age most poorly is probably a lot of the topical pop culture stuff, which was frequently clever/funny but is so ingrained into the show that I think it'll make it less engaging to anyone who didn't live through the time period

i got to the part in strangers thing where the kids insist that winston is the worst ghostbuster and that surprised me because the cined thread really seems to like winston someone told an anecdote about playing ghostbusters with his friends as a kid and adults thinking it was cute he wanted to roleplay as winston and they didnt understand why anyone would think that was strange

As an adult I absolutely love Winston. But as a kids he didn't do much. Mostly because they hosed the character over after Eddie Murphy didn't get the part or passed on it for some reason. So they like halved his screen time.

the first season is just solid as hell horror, especially the first half. second isn’t as good, still decent, but it suffers from having a main character behave arbitrarily stupid when they had avoided that in the past.

haven’t watched the third yet.

Eddie Murphy passed on it because he thought it sounded dumb and was super-pissed at himself when it came out and was a blockbuster.

Fun to think what the charisma supernova that was a young Eddie Murphy might've brought to that film.

the third has its moments but some of the main plot points are just so unbelievably stupid that it ruined the entire season for me

like this kind of stupid (spoiler):

it's 1985. the soviet government builds an enormous science lab underneath an Indiana mall, staffed entirely by people wearing Red Army uniforms who speak Russian and no English (except like two people who speak basic english with extremely thick russian accents) and guard the mall with AK-47s and run around town shooting people in public places, and no one ever notices or thinks anything suspicious is going on. it's implied that this lab has been in operation or construction for at least a year. how this was all set up and maintained in the middle of Reaganland is handwaved away with some vague sense that the mayor of the town is corrupt and was in cahoots with them. no one ever comments on how this would be literally impossible logistically, they just ignore it all because it's an homage to 80s movies and in 80s movies the soviets were the omnipotent bad guys who could do anything anywhere at any time

the main weakness of stranger things is that its fairly uncritical of eighties culture and ideology which is kind of surprising since the show mostly avoids pop culture fetishism like the main references the show makes are in fairly logical contexts like dressing up for halloween or playing with dolls or dumb nerdy games of dungeons and dragons and the kids just completely forget that all of that stuff even exists when theres actually serious plot going on

i think the main strength the show has that let it get so big is that theres a fairly solid internal continuity the writers dont just pull poo poo out of their asses and expect us to accept it without question they also understand that plot twists work not because theyre random lol surprises but because looking back you can actually see the obvious foreshadowing and sometimes even figure out yourself where the misdirection is coming from and how something is about to go horribly wrong

in a sane world this would just be the bare minimum requirement for most of the fiction we consume but alas the main dominant influence right now is jj abrams who learned the worst possible lessons from the eighties

the biggest problem w season 3 is that the show thrives on its character interactions and season 3 bloats the cast out so far that you barely get to see personality let alone how those personalities interact

season 1 is legit good for being a tv serial horror show

season 2 was bad because it really felt like they were completely unprepared to make another season. like they didn't think the first season would take off, so they didn't have any prep work done for season 2, and then when season 1 took off they had to scramble to come up with content. several of the plot beats are just straight rehashes from season 1, the entirety of episode 7 is completely divorces one character from the rest of the established cast and has them run around with a bunch of people that we won't ever meet again, only to end by dumping them right back in town with everyone else. it also introduces a few new characters but seems to struggle with figuring out how they want to use them

season 3 was bad because it felt like they got completely away from being a serial horror show. or at least the tone changed, where season 1 was like actually scary and tense and the protagonists were always fighting the unknown on their back foot, season 3 became more like buffy or the x-files where it's just a monster of the week show and the existential threat is provided by a completely implausible injection of SECRET RUSSIAN MILITARY BASES into a setting that really didn't need it

season 3 felt like they realized one of the mistakes of season 2 was that in season 1 they killed off all the human bad guys, and season 2 lost a lot of what made season 1 compelling as a result, so they were like "uh uh who can be the new human bad guys now that the us government is at least ostensibly supporting our heroes?" and landed on secret russian military bases in the middle of suburban indiana

im convinced that we have trump to thank for that particular plot development you can see them try to pivot to having the soviets be just as evil as the americans in season two with that weird line about how they have to keep everything secret because what if the soviets try to reproduce it since the soviets would think having hellspawn monsters running around the world is a good thing for some reason and this is presented as if its a sincerely persuasive argument

up until that point soviet is just a code word for bogeyman that doesnt really mean anything which is how everyone saw cold war red baiting before 11/9 and what a coincidence filming for season 2 started on 11/7

So to go back to Tom Clancy I read this when looking up The Sum of All Fears

Wikipedia posted:

Clancy served as executive producer on the film, and regarding the changes from his book, jokingly introduced himself in the commentary track on the DVD release as “the author of the book that he [director Phil Alden Robinson, who is present with Clancy] ignored”. Nevertheless, he complained about technical inaccuracies throughout the film in the commentary.

He must have been just a completley insufferable chud

On the subject of "technical inaccuracies", one of Clancy's claims to fame was that he'd always drop some hot new tech in each book: The Hunt for Red October alluded to the silence of the magnetohydrodynamic drive, but Clancy liked to brag that he was interviewed by government agents on how accurately he got the Los Angeles class's sonar systems, and then when he asked which parts he got right, he got told that that was classified.

Red Storm Rising predicted the F-117 stealth fighter in the fictitious "F-19". In Clancy's book, it was described as being sleek and curved, which doesn't match the angular design of the F-117, but sleek and curved was what the B-2 Spirit ended up being. RSR also "predicted" the shortage of smart bombs in the event of a shooting war, i.e. Desert Storm.

I already mentioned that Debt of Honor had the F-22 Raptor and the RAH-66 Commanche, as well as Congress getting 9/11'd.

Which brings us to Rainbow Six.

In the final part of the book, when The Troops hunt down the pharma CEO in his super-secret base in Brazil from where he plans to repopulate the world after unleashing super-Ebola (I swear I am not kidding, that's the plot), they use a new device: the heartbeat sensor. It's supposed to be able to detect "low frequency electric field" given off by a beating human heart, to a distance of 30 feet, even through concrete walls.

No such technology ever materialized, and whoever pitched the idea to Clancy as a potential new breakthrough in tech in the coming years was probably just making it up.

im inclined to agree the eddie murphy version of the role was a mary sue deliberately designed to lure him into taking the part and its easy to see why they realized it didnt work with the rest of the movie at all once that plan failed

of the many problems with the ghostbusters remake the most obvious one is that it didnt have any straight men or women for that matter the whole thing felt like a cartoon because everyone was trying way too hard to be funny

this seems to be a problem with a lot of shows these days. i watched all of Insecure with my then-gf. the end season 1 made me think whether the rest of it would be a laugh-out-loud show like the first half or a relationship drama like the second half. it went with neither, instead it became a boring as gently caress show where nothing of consequence happens. i guess Issa Rae didn't think it would get another season

the reaction to Joker from shitlib twitter checkmarks would be eyerolling if it didn't have such chilling undertones. it's a combination of "comic book movies are for US, not THEM" elitism and a straight-up desire for censorship in the Tipper Gore mold. and the movie hasn't even been loving released to a wide audience yet

in all likelihood, it's going to be a fine, passable movie that will be forgotten about a month after it leaves theaters, because that's all Hollywood makes these days
