I saw TV on the Radio around 2011, they were great. I haven’t listened to them too much lately (don’t think I ever listened to the one they put out in 2014 honestly) but Tunde Adebimpe is one of my favorite indie singers. It also reminded me of the period where David Bowie would just drop in with random indie bands. Now I’m sad.

Was thinking back on the '10s and would like to post about another artist of the decade: Charles Bradley. In his 50s, Charles started performing as a James Brown impersonator under the name Black Velvet. He was discovered by the co-founder of Daptone Records and introduced to Tom Brenneck of the Menahan Street Band. In 2011, when Charles was 62 years old, he released his debut album No Time for Dreaming. He'd spent his artistic life impersonating James Brown, but this record was strictly personal. He sings about his brother's death, the troubles he'd experienced throughout his life, and the general lovely state of America. The record became a pretty big hit, largely thanks to Charles's incredible live performances, and for the first time in his life he found success. in 2013 and 2016, he released two followups, Victim of Love and Changes, both of which were excellent. And then, in 2017, he died of stomach cancer. Most of us will spend the last 5 years of our lives making GBS threads ourselves on the couch — Charles spent his becoming a rock star. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CMf7l_Xe0A Polo-Rican fucked around with this message at 17:22 on Sep 30, 2019 |

As stated before, there are so many artists that have come and gone as well as changed the music genre, so this best of decades things has been a real brain burner. I can agree Charles Bradley should be on that list, though. He is someone who endured a hard life to bring soul music back to popularity. I was fortunate enough to see him while he was still physically well enough to do shows and it was one I loved. A very tender genuine person that cared for others. His trademark thing at shows was going into the crowd and hugging as many people as he could.

Charles Bradley is a good pick. I feel like he kept growing and was on the cusp of being even bigger and having some maintstream crossover success then cancer cut that short for him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WMxYAmKvw0 Solomon Gumball fucked around with this message at 07:32 on Oct 1, 2019 |

If we're gonna include later-in-life musicians, can't no 2010s list ignore Sonny Knight. Dude was maybe just a local legend here but you have to acknowledge the insanity that he pulled off with the Lakers. Like... https://youtu.be/-e0xHCWkc3g https://youtu.be/vcrzoSgQMxI

thrilla in vanilla posted:There might be a new chromatics album imminent? Not dear tommy? Unclear either way but I need it badly either way https://youtu.be/oLKzmW3ccmE This is the first time I’ve ever read up on Dear Tommy. quote:Dear Tommy was said to be completed and Chromatics announced the LP in December 2014. The single "Shadow" was released in 2015, including physical copies on vinyl, ahead of the album.By 2015 Chromatics had also shared the tracks "In Films", "Just Like You" and "I Can Never Be Myself When You're Around" on the Internet. However, it was reported in 2017 that Johnny Jewel had destroyed all physical copies of the album in January 2016—15,000 CDs and 10,000 vinyl copies—following a near-death experience whilst swimming in 2015 and his subsequent desire to improve the songs before release. Those songs already made available from the first version of the record were eventually removed from Internet sources. It is believed that the album was then re-recorded, including previously released songs, and will eventually be released with a changed tracklist from that originally announced. The wiki also says this upcoming release is what has become of Dear Tommy.

Album is up on YouTube. (not posting as I'm not sure that would be a rules violation, as the album isn't officially out yet) All these songs are new I believe, meaning they aren't some of the songs that have been released over the past couple years that are supposed to be on the Dear Tommy album (Black Walls, Blue Girl, Shadow, Time Rider) , or songs that had been released beforehand that were supposed to be on Dear Tommy from way back, before Johnny decided he needed to rework them. So I think Dear Tommy is still coming. theblackw0lf fucked around with this message at 19:10 on Oct 1, 2019 |

I'm surprised how much diversity of sound there is given it only runs 45 minutes which is a lot shorter than either Night Drive or Kill for Love, as well as the planned runtime for Dear Tommy. It's like they stripped out the meandering and hit all their different marks - here's a cover (two, here, actually, both impressively tasteful and interesting interpretations as usual), here's a ballad, here's something funkier, here's a ambient interlude, here's the guitar-heavy post-punk, here's some dream pop...anyway, love it.
