It's been a year and still no blu or uhd of that yo soy cuba 4k scan. Unless you wanna cough up a few hundred bucks for the educational only blu release killin' me milestone. at least screen the drat thing more or something

Fun story: the first time I tried to watch Satantango I was about three hours into a  experience. Don't do this.

I mean, when I wat saw Out 1 (a 13 hour movie) it was screened over the course of a weekend. It was basically like marathoning two seasons (or so) of a tv show. It was exhausting but that exhaustion is part of the experience of the movie.

A friend of mine in Ohio is a huge LOTR turbonerd and a theater near him does back-to-back-to-back screenings annually. He and his wife dress up in costume and go every single year. Post-college I think the most I binged in one session was the Samurai Trilogy accidentally (I watched the first two and, I mean, might as well watch the third...). That’s “only” a little over 5 hours though and I still felt dazed afterwards.

I watched my EE Lord of the Rings DVDs back to back once ten years ago because I had a job interview the next day, and needed to reduce my anxiety levels. I probably wouldn't do that again today, but at the time I would also take breaks between discs, and pause it whenever I needed to hit the bathroom and do normal people things. I think that was actually the last time I watched LOTR

The Shining UHD is absolutely stunning. Maybe THE best release the format has to offer up to this point. The film sucks you in on a level that is just didn't before, there's an immediacy to it that jumps right out at you right away. It's also one of the most even grains I've seen on a UHD, like with the opening heli shots I figured there might be some over the top grain there but nope, it was perfect. I can't think of a single scene where I noticed uneven grain.

There's still plenty there, it's just had a little taken off the top, and probably to keep every scene consistent.

Not sure if "grain managed" is meant as a criticism but the whole presentation really really worked for me. It's the kind of consistent grain that gives the image a more natural feel but is never distracting. And it probably goes with out saying that HDR + Kubrick= amazing

Not that I've tried the alternative, but I definitely think movie marathons are better at home. There at least has to be the option of doing something else for a few minutes. LOTR marathon is a good time, but that's the way to do it.

There’s only one optical effect shot in the entire film, so we’re pretty much seeing straight camera negative. Also that Motion Picture Imaging does miraculous work and Leon Vitali was overseeing it. 2001 is a lot tougher since the 65mm negative has a lot of replacement dupes due to damage despite nearly all the original shots being in camera optical.

Back when there were only 5 Best Picture nominees the AMC theatres around here used to marathon all the nominees. No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Michael Clayton, Atonement, and Juno in a row was a loving trip but when they don't give you enough time to leave for a real meal and all you can eat is various salt carbs and maybe a hotdog you end up feeling awful. I still think Michael Clayton is kind of a forgotten gem though.

RE: Gremlins UHD. It’s a step-up. I took a a quick gander at the tavern scene. Idk. Definitely a bit dark but not too terrible. Looking forward to rewatching in December. I popped in here to say the Casino UHD steelbook from Best Buy is a dollar more than the regular edition. I think it’s a good step-up art-wise.
