Like I really like the idea of "what if the guilt became too much and Peter shirked his responsibility" because guilt is absolutely something that has hosed Peter up for years so it works better for him than "Jason Todd died and Batman quit because he was sad for the first time" and I ADORE that Jonah is the one who goes to him and says "we need Spider-Man" and the first scene in the mask, when he's doing jokes and beating guys up in his undies, and he says something about "it's not me, I'm somewhere else. The mask is talking now", is such a good inversion of the whole "Batman is the real Bruce Wayne" thing

its a spider-man series where events move in real ime

iron man gets involved in vietnam which extends the war and alienates captain america, who tells spidey he's gonna investigate what's really happening there

he immediately defects and wages a one-man guerrilla war against the us army

For a character that really should be the dumbest most gross jingoistic thing ever they do a lot of stories of him going rogue against USA fashyness.

Guess it's because he was designed to be what people wanted to believe the USA was instead of what it is :v:

captain america was created for the sole purpose of getting children to get all gung ho about world war two without question

it amazes me that a character literally named captain america is somehow just a neutral pop culture icon imagine any other country trying to promote a character with a name like that without getting mercilessly mocked by everyone

Mark Waid did a story in the early 00s where skrulls kidnap and impersonate cap to start a race war and after beating the poo poo out of skrulls on live TV he just yells at America for being shitheads who would turn on each other so quickly the second an authority figure said "hey so, there's Undesirables hiding among you"

Ultimates is trash but "what if cap woke up in 2000 with all his 50s ideas and his oorah jingoism" is fine

The France line is the exception because cap would have known about the resistance!!!!!

capt america played straight would be directing drone strikes onto civilian targets in afghanistan and torturing enemy pows on cia black sites and poo poo. it's pretty hilarious that the reality of what our military gets up to is so objectively awful that even comic book fantasy writers are like "uh, we straight up can't have our iconic good guy character doing these things". the real crimes our military inflicts on other countries is so cartoonishly evil that even the realm of comic books won't let a good guy in-fiction be a part of the same atrocities

also i haven't read a captain america comic since the end of the civil war run, but have they recreated his iconic punching hitler scene with him punching an alt-right pepe or are the writers aware enough of where their bread gets buttered that they won't cross that line

captain america: winter soldier was basically him opposing what was a super drone program using helicarriers instead of standard drones before even finding out nazis in the government were planning to upload their own kill lists

p good movie for a mcu one i think, the elevator fight scene holds up as p baller imo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqIBGEcKhGs

like others have said captain america has often been written as the embodiment of an idealistic america that never existed vs the one that does

it's also probably why he isn't hated by every non american too, even ho chi minh bought into the idealistic version of america before recognizing it was nothing but a lie

i'm standing by my take the second movie at least has a good message compared to most hollywood drivel that rather fellate drone operators as unsung heroes than question that drone murder is inherently wrong and needs to stop

Winter Soldier is good.

Civil War has the kind of Nolan Batman issue of the solution to "government control bad" is that super powered vigilantes should be able to operate free of jurisdiction or accountability.

ya it tries to shoehorn that into the plot but really the plot is just a hamfisted way to setup the sweet airport fight scene and fails to ever reach a satisfying conclusion on any of the themes it briefly touches upon
