Hey Hey Let's Go! 喧嘩する

Frontier is releasing Planet Zoo, the big follow up to Planet Coaster, but it seems they put more energy into the simulation / tycoon side of things so it's not just a big sandbox game.

Basic game is $44.99 and they have a Deluxe edition available for $54.99 which includes the 2 week beta from September 24th – October 8th. And the Deluxe edition also includes 3 bonus animals and the game soundtrack... And some wallpapers for your desktop that there's no way you'll ever find someone uploading to imgur for free.

Planet Zoo is releasing on November 5th. But there is a special beta for those that preorder the Deluxe edition that will run from September 24th – October 8th!

(The developers are aiming for 4PM BST for the Beta to be available to download and play, and will no longer be available after 5PM on October 8th. They haven't said anything about game saves, but they are currently saying they can't guarantee any blueprint items from the Beta will be compatible with the launched game)

The game has a lot of major improvements over Planet Coaster (hopefully performance is one of them)... Blueprints will save terrain, the fences for the enclosures have a simple drag and drop style so you can build long fences pretty loving quick. They will also be stealing some idea from Parkitech, and having backstage type areas the guests don't want to see...

The game appears to have a significantly larger amount of simulation aspects to the game. You will get protesters in the zoo, the animals need to have needs met. There are backstage areas as well that guests don't want to see. I am pretty sure the game will be much more than just a zoo sandbox.

Here are some sweet screenshots to get hyped up!

From the screenshots and videos, it seems Frontier have has went to the extreme on modeling the animals.

The current list of known animals in Planet Zoo, developers have said there will be 50+ animals available... The animals all have their own needs and things they want to be happy and healthy...There are 3 animals for the Deluxe Edition of the game in this list, Pygmy Hippopotamus, Thompson's Gazelle, and the Komodo Dragon.
  • African Bush Elephant
  • Timber Wolf
  • Grizzly Bear
  • Hippopotamus
  • Plains Zebra
  • Reticulated Giraffe
  • Indian Peafowl
  • Ring-tailed Lemur
  • West African Lion
  • Western Chimpanzee
  • Bornean Orangutan
  • Brazilian Wandering Spider
  • Galapagos Giant Tortoise
  • Green Iguana
  • Lesser Antillean Iguana
  • Boa Constrictor
  • Bengal Tiger
  • Cheetah
  • African Wild Dog
  • Black Wildebeest
  • Indian Rhinoceros
  • Saltwater Crocodile
  • Common Ostrich
  • Common Warthog
  • Goliath Bird-Eating Tarantula
  • Titan Beetle
  • Okapi
  • Indian Elephant
  • Snow Leopard
  • Lehmann's Poison Dart Frog
  • Aldabra Giant Tortoise
  • Yellow Anaconda
  • Pygmy Hippopotamus*
  • Thompson's Gazelle*

  • Baird's Tapir
  • Himalayan Brown Bear
  • Pronghorn Antelope
  • Goliath Frog
  • Giant Forest Scorpion

And finally some gameplay videos to get hyped up!

Got about 6 hours into the Beta so far today. It's a good fun game! I made $1,400 conservative fun bucks from just mating some african dogs and selling it through their market! Franchise mode seems like it will be pretty fun!

here is Jonny5 from Channel 5 doing his first walk through of the game!

Watching this game intently. Totally my bag, it looks awesome, and have heard from binge watching people playing this that they won't make playing impossible without their servers so no SC5 type launch hopefully. That was my biggest worry. But everything looks fantastic, though I get a bit scared when I see frames tank on streamer rigs. Its kind of hard to expect streamers to bring their A-game to what looks like literally the only game that has ever made the hours I spend in sandboxes making things pixel perfect, so most I've seen have been a bit slapdash in their zoos, especially with people clamoring to be the first to throw it on youtube. You'll have to be the canary down this gas mine, though I actually had the deluxe in my steam basket earlier today before catching myself on.

I noticed an emphasis on education of visitors, but can you torment them in strange ways to milk money from them? For example, my real local zoo is basically built on a mountainside and the only cafe other than the visitor centre is at the top of it, the half way point, so they could basically charge whatever they want, everyone is exhausted hungry and thirsty after walking at a 45 degree angle for an hour and a half.
Will it be possible using the multiplayer trading, genetic diversity and breeding systems to flood the market/ecosystem with a plague of tiny giraffes that breed super fast but have no immune system?
Is the path snapping and UI as janky and mazelike as it has seemed in streams or is there just a knack to it with hotkeys?
Can you fine tune the zookeepers to one task or enclosure? Like have one feeder or just one guy who only works with one enclosure?
I saw that enclosures have numbers, but can you rename them dreadfully unfunny things such has the Hippo Campus, Ostwitz or the Lemurcation Zone?
What are the chances of modding support, given that they're pushing things like points for logging in X days in a row?

Well maybe, you get to put donation bins next to the enclosures, which is basically 90% of the income you will make with running the zoo. Like 1 good habitat with a donation bin is all it takes currently to turn the franchise mode into a sandbox. Which hopefully they adjust at some point...

To flood the market? Probably not really, unless you work with a bunch of people. Seems like it would take a lot of work to even make a dent into it when others are breeding and selling their own animals.

The path system is still the same as Planet Coaster's system. So it's janky as hell and takes some time to get used too...

Yea, similar to Planet Coaster and even the old RCT games, you can assign staff to certain habitats and designate which staff buildings they use to complete their tasks. And you can rename the habitats to whatever you wish!

The Beta is certainly a little suspect, but Frontier seems to be paying a lot of attention to the players feedback and hopefully will adjust some things for release. Some of the animals reproduce like crazy in the game. Also the death rate of the newborn animals is basically 0%, so if you're ostriches have 10 babies, then you are gonna get 10 adults out of it. And I'm pretty sure they don't even lay eggs or anything.

Which is also the big downside I've seen so far, there is basically no interaction between the baby animals and their parents.

This is one of the things that makes me slightly upset. I'd go crazy for this game if they introduced incubation of eggs and more morbid stuff like failed clutches.

I'm adoring the beta so far — if you've played and enjoyed previous Frontier games, you'll likely enjoy PZ — but man, this game hogs resources like some kind of small, porcine herbivore. I've got a six-month-old gaming rig that runs everything from Battlefield 5 to Age of Wonders: Planetfall at 4K with all bells and whistles, but on PZ, I have to cut that back to 1080p and "High" settings.

What are the odds that this is just a beta thing, and that another optimization pass will make the final game run much more smoothly?

Given that it has no mention of consoles, no chance of downgrading, nor optimizing. I checked and it said I could run it just below recommended. I don't need to see a tear on a baby ostrich's eye, but I would like to. Is this why only the really cool kids are playing sandbox in the let's plays?

Bummer. I was at least hoping they'd do a bit of work on the particle effects. Something about an elephant spraying dust onto its back causes the game to chug.

Any information yet on whether there are differences between individual animals of the same species? I'd love it if my various beasties had minor quirks and things I had to figure out through experience and tinkering, though I can see why that might end up being too fiddly.

Well they have fertility/size/life expectancy, immunity, feelings such as stress, injury, stimulation etc. species has general appeal to visitors, group size and various animal politics such as male:female ratio, whether breeding is alpha only, how many alphas, which gender is alpha etc. The animals will duke it out for who becomes alpha. All kinds of odd scenarios can come up, like your alpha is firing blanks, and because there's too many other males in the group, they're either fighting or trying to escape the enclosure. As for quirks, there are some cases where animals are great all day until they come to the window where the crowd sees them, then they get depressed looking as hell. That might be because the viewing area invades their privacy too much or something, so you can end up having protestors thinking they're helping the animals by camping out at viewing areas with signs, when its them being there that's the animals only problem. solutions are things like mirrored glass etc. They're much more like sims than an arbitrary resource.

One thing I'm finding funny to watch in streams is the markets. Streamers are desperate to get everything done in one sitting and will buy anything that looks like an appealing animal, and will panic sell off other animals rather than wait for fair prices. They're buying low on junk ostriches which will never appreciate in value because they're buying either infertile females or males (which are largely useless because of ostrich breeding politics). Then they'll be tricked into investing big into a "low price" tiger or snow leopard, not realizing that the one they're buying is geriatric and will probably die in a year and taking out loans to build enclosures for them that end up empty quickly. Its like The Wolf of Wall Street, but with actual wolves.

Most of the animals in this are charismatic enough to have loads of support. Pandas and black rhinos are probably hosed in the wild I guess.

Generally the stuff under imminent threat is poo poo that doesn't get into games like this really.

Imagine a game about all the endangered or extinct animals no one cared about to begin with. There must be tons of species we have let die just because they were not interesting or cute enough or were maybe plain annoying. I doubt there will be widespread support to save an endangered species of mosquito, tick or horsefly.

Onto the game though, where are my drat Emperor penguins! Things look very good, but if I can't see Penguins wobbling around then I know I will stop playing feeling unfulfilled

I worked with a frog that is restricted to like a 80m stretch of creek and tends to move like 3m in it's life. Now admittedly this actually seems to have been the case even before European settlement of the area, so that one eventually dying out may have been kind of inevitable without a captive zoo pop anyway.

Also worked with these dudes who are really cool, and an interesting educational thing, because unlike many endangered animals they live in suburbia and are very obvious. Their main threat is they relied on older forest for breeding and most of them got wiped out then they moved to pine plantations, and then those started being removed as land value went up. But they're a good species for getting people into conservation cause if you live in my town you will see them being lovable noisy idiots and chilling in your yard or local park.

Also give me blue penguins, my local zoo had those they're neat.

They do have some fairly obscure critically endangered animals such as the gharial, Lehmann's poison frog and the Lesser Antillean iguana. There's also some critically endangered subspecies such as the Western African Lion (fewer than 250 mature individuals in the wild) and the Himalayan brown bear (about 500).

But yeah, bring on the penguins and other birds. I want a cassowary

Frogs and other Amphibians do seem to have become more represented and worked on to preserve overall, atleast here in Sweden, I love frogs and toads so this pleases me greatly. I would love to work with endangered/threatened animal conservation, keeping tabs on frog populations and the like.

Oh and we need Capybaras, special ability is that they can co-habitate and chill with any other animal without issue and form friendships with any species, even if said species is not normally capable of such relationships.

There is a campaign and story mode in the game.

They also have their Franchise mode. Which at least should have some goals to accomplish. Although from the Beta it's basically a sandbox with an element of puppy mill tycoon to get credits for more animals.

It's a Planet game alright. The career mode is at least a bit more extensive and acts a tutorial of sorts to the game, but the game itself is still an "editor" of sorts, all about creating your perfect Zoo, rather than playing a scenario. Basically if you enjoyed the deep options that Planet Coaster gave you when it came to building your perfect theme park, you'll likely enjoy this game also.

The sandbox mode is where the game is at, like Communist Bear said, this is an editor more than anything. I appreciate that clicking on an animal will give you all you need to build the perfect habitat for them. It can be a little confusing, and I wish it gave a list of recommended items you should use and you could just click on those from the animal info screen. But otherwise it's great. This is a much better sandbox zoo game then Jurassic Park Evolution.
