Reflecting on the poor game design of this. The hammerhead in the video dies after like, 4 or 5 small ship impacts. That is substantially fewer ships than it can outright tank shots from- it can easily handle 8-10 shooting it at once. Meaning that a small ship ramming is doing two times the total damage of a small ship shooting, all in the course of an instant. The only cost being a respawn timer (very short) for the pilot- and the payout being a respawn timer (very long, 1-hour plus) for the capital ship pilot.

If this were an actual game with actual stakes and you wanted to take a hammerhead off the field, why would this not be the first tactic you used? There's no downside.

So what you're saying is that they need to nerf ramming damage by two orders of magnitude or so to the larger ship involved. Got it. Whale ships are back to being invincible to peasant ships and not vice versa.

Interestingly, with abbreviations and shortened spellings taking over language via text, in 2949 English will be unrecognizable to what it is now.

I know you're joking but it really is a very hard problem to solve which is why most games don't let you just run around in giant capital ships as an upgrade. They just don't scale well to rinky-dink little fighters.

What I would do if I were in charge of game balance and the game was an actual game and not vaporware:
* Capital ships would not have shields but would, instead, be extremely well armored.
* Small ships would have regenerating shields but would be very vulnerable to fire once they lost them.
* The capital armor could be countered by torpedos, large guns, or by gradually whittling the ship down by shooting targetable systems.
* Torpedos are large, slow moving, and can easily be shot by small ships.
* Capital ship defenses would be things like automatic turrets, missile launchers, and CC abilities
* Small ships would be definitively faster and more agile than cap ships in QT and physical travel

This gives a good balance of gameplay- Capships are a substantial threat, but not invulnerable, and most importantly they do not get to choose the terms of engagement. Small ships will not accomplish much by ramming, but instead must make strafing runs to wear down the larger ship (while the capship shoots at them with turrets and conducts repairs in between runs). Torpedos are the hard counter but move slow and can be screened by turrets and small ships.

Star Citizen has all of these elements but half of them don't work, and the rest they've just jumbled in a pile and declared that whatever cost the most always wins. The toughest, fastest ship in the game right now is a yacht.

the problem with starship troopers is that you cant just make a straight up propaganda flick, right down to the peaceniks deservedly dying, and expect that the target audience of teenage boys understand that its a satire or parody at all. Like the only way Starship Troopers is a satire is if you go into it with both a clear intellectual understanding of nazi propaganda and contempt for it. To the extent most people understood the satire, it was only at the level of the kids smashing the bugs being over the top. Even though that wasn't over the top it was literal portrayal of a mobilized fascist society.

and thats how we get star citizens

The movie probably plays it a bit too straight for most people, compared to RoboCop which is more of an over the top dark comedy. I never really got it until I watched it again as an adult. The satirical elements are all there, but the tone is inconsistent and the plot mainly devolves into generic sci-fi action.

So now you have idiots like Chris who straight up love the movie and idolize the sort of mobilized soft-fascist/state-capitalist society it portrays. Human society in Star Citizen is basically a dystopia run by an exploitative fascist oligarchy, but it’s bizarrely played off as being this cool and good thing, and everyone just loves being lorded over by gigantic monopolistic corporations; because Chris has the political consciousness of a 12 year old.

I guess it’s one of the reasons that SC attracts so much of the neckbeared paunchy gen X alt-right edgelord crowd.

Okay, I thought i could cross out even more words but i'll post it anyway.
But i think we can boil the message down to:
"We sold you limited edition merch which will not be limited anymore" (you assholes)
"Oh yeah there will be improvements to your experience soon. Just you wait a little more you naughty boy."

Edit: So...step one in improving the concierge experience is selling more merch! Which they are totally THRILLED to announce. I refuse to accept that this is real.

A throwback but Freespace 2 absolutely nailed this balance on the head.

Cap ships were vulnerable to certain weapons, and pinpoint attacks against subsystems - but primarily slugged it out with each other. They had turrets for defense against ships and weapons - and they had no shields.

Pretty sure there were even mods that let you control the big ships instead of the fighters/bombers. They absolutely nailed the balance aspect where every ship had a purpose and an impact.

I'm still surprised no one has made a Freespace style game yet. All these new spacegames and not a single plot driven action focused game. Everything has to be a total universe simulator, I don't get it.

I mean SP games are tough to do well and expensive to make, so I get why it hasn't been done. I'm just surprised no one has tried, and find it weird that space game devs are still stuck in the open world fad of the early 2010s.

I pretty much only watch 80s/90s scifi anime (e.g. Megazone, Dominion Tank Police, Dallos etc.), so I am used to the peculiarities of anime from that period. Honestly, I can't even watch most modern anime (with a few notable exceptions).
