liberals like Scorcese tend to fetishize art because they lack the language to really clarify why things like the MCU are bad. It's not like Marvel movies "aren't cinema" as if they aren't works of art - the problem is that they're produced en masse as commodities first and as movies second. Their only purpose is to reify normative values without actually challenging anything, so you can argue that's bad and that it's bad cinema but you can't say it's "not cinema" as if it's somehow illegitimate. but MCU heads are never going to be able to make this kind of argument because they've convinced themselves that actually MCU poo poo is good.

I like the Marvel movies (as well as the Disney Star Wars movies) but Scorsese is 100 percent right about the Marvel movies. There's been what 23 of these movies over the past 11 years and like what are the quotable lines from these movies? I would say the biggest problem with the Marvel (and Star Wars) movies it's the assembly line nature of then where the studio has mapped out most of the movie and doesn't give the director much freedom in the crafting of the movie and their willingness to reshoot shoot so much of their movies well makes a voice that isn't what the studio wants impossible and that's a huge detriment to these movies and to the medium as a whole

i remember i saw some famous artist speak at mason gross instead of regular class when i took a 101 course for fun and the art kids in the audience kept trying to ask the most pretentious questions and she wasn't having it but instead talked about how pulp trash like dick tracey inspired her and that people from the midwest drink from the bottom of the barrel culturally and enjoy it sometimes you just gotta consume the garbage, it's more fun to talk about anyway e- heck i'd argue refusing to consume trash media of any kind is absolutely a bougie affectation that reflects a disdain for the common man and their "lowbrow" tastes. well crafted high art serves an important function but there is only so much of it people can take in before needing some good old fashioned shlock Percelus has issued a correction as of 13:56 on Oct 5, 2019 |
