The new Angel Olsen is so good. I don't know if it's better than My Woman but it's close.

This new Wilco album is pretty good! Might be my favorite thing they've done in close to a decade, honestly. It sounds like the old Wilco that I fell in love with. I haven't been a big fan of anything they've done for the last several years, so it's nice to hear something I actually like from them again.

This my favourite song off their new album I think, but it's all great: I got to see them do an acoustic micro-show a few weeks ago in Minneapolis that was put on by the local third-tier adult-contemporary radio station. They were great. They were also extremely gracious because the event was, uh, not the most well-run. The little interview they did was hilarious because the DJ talking to them didn't know what he was doing. This guy asked the most overcomplicated and hard-to-answer stuff, didn't actually talk with them, just let them answer and then barreled ahead with his next paragraph. After about three of these questions I noticed Ragnar just stare out into space for a second with a facial expression of what looked like "oh man, this guy. this guy right here". I am pretty sure that's what he was thinking because the rest of the interview his answers kept getting sillier and more ridiculous. I am also pretty sure the DJ was completely oblivious to this.

I’ve been really digging Sunbeam Sound Machine since they showed up on my Spotify discover playlist earlier this week. I’d call them maybe a combo of Tame Impala and Real Estate with sound leaning towards the psych side. https://youtu.be/pmaAv_XVPgM https://youtu.be/HN38WD5UGsU

I wonder if they thought it was almost too obvious but that's dumb because this list should be filled with those obvious choices. Also i just realized there's no Chvrches which is also a huge bummer, come on, The Mother We Share should really be on there.

Yes I think that's a big part of it, their staff is probably totally different and trends in music are different. Plus the entire website has leaned more pop and r&b the futher into the decade we've got. I mean they have sponsored craft beer and fashion posts now, it's a pretty different site. They also don't review or are very late on reviewing things that would have been considered essential previously. But hey a review for an 18 year old John Mayer album over the weekend!

Those kinds of lists are always tough to understand the point of because they're created at a moment in time when things can't be accurately assessed. The stuff from earlier in the decade has had time to marinate in our cultural consciousness and the stuff from the end of the decade feels fresh and exciting right now so everything is on uneven ground. We won't really understand the significance of this decade's music for another 10 or 20 years when we can see how it actually influenced the next generation - if you looked at two "The best songs of the 90s" lists written in 1999 and 2019 I guarantee they'd be very different.
