New press release for this week! Wednesday will be the 300th episode of South Park and I guess if you still watch Comedy Central they will be marathoning South Park starting at 9AM. Although in a preseason interview, it didn't sound like they were planning to do anything groundbreaking with the 300th episode considering how poorly 200 & 201 went...

Annnnnnnnnnnnnddddddddddddddddddddddd South Park has been banned in China

quote:

South Park' Scrubbed From Chinese Internet After Critical Episode

After the "Band in China" episode mocked Hollywood for shaping its content to please the Chinese government, Beijing has responded by deleting all clips, episodes and discussions of the Comedy Central show.
South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone probably saw this coming, and to their credit, simply didn't care.

The most recent episode of South Park, "Band in China," has been generating loads of media attention for its sharp critique of the way Hollywood tends to shape its content to avoid offending Chinese government censors in any way whatsoever.

Now, those very same government censors, in the real world, have lashed back at South Park by deleting virtually every clip, episode and online discussion of the show from Chinese streaming services, social media and even fan pages.

A cursory perusal through China's highly regulated Internet landscape shows the show conspicuously absent everywhere it recently had a presence. A search of the Twitter-like social media service Weibo turns up not a single mention of South Park among the billions of past posts. On streaming service Youku, owned by Internet giant Alibaba, all links to clips, episodes and even full seasons of the show are now dead.

And on Baidu's Tieba, China's largest online discussions platform, the threads and sub-threads related to South Park are nonfunctional. If users manually type in the URL for what was formerly the South Park thread, a message appears saying that, "According to the relevant law and regulation, this section is temporarily not open."

The draconian response is par for the course for China's authoritarian government, which has even been known to aggressively censor Winnie the Pooh, because some local Internet users had affectionately taken to comparing Chinese president Xi Jinping to the character.

South Park's "Band in China" episode featured a pair of storylines critical of China. One involves Randy getting caught attempting to sell weed in China and getting sent to a work camp similar to those Beijing has been using in Xinjiang Provence to hold as many as a million Chinese Muslims for political indoctrination. (While he's at the work camp, Randy runs into an imprisoned Winnie the Pooh)

A second plot follows Stan, Jimmy, Kenny and Butters forming a metal band, which becomes popular and attracts the attention of a manager who wants to make a film about them. But then the script keeps changing so that the film can safely be distributed in China.

"Now I know how Hollywood writers feel," Stan says at one point while a Chinese guard watches over him and alters his work while he writes the script. Several shots also are taken at Disney, including a scene where Mickey Mouse shows up to make sure all his employees (other Marvel and Disney cartoon characters) play ball with the Chinese authorities.

The episode's critique has proved especially timely, in light of the controversy now swirling around the NBA. On Sunday, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey issued a tweet expressing his solidarity with Hong Kong's pro-democracy protestors.

Although just a single tweet, from just one among thousands of NBA figures, the message sparked a deluge of criticism in China, where the Hong Kong protests have become a hot button political issue, with Beijing's propaganda apparatus going into overdrive to shape local opinion of the movement as anarchistic and untethered to legitimate political grievances. Chinese broadcasters announced they would stop airing Rockets games, and local sponsors pulled their funds from the team.

Fearing financial implications, the Rockets and the NBA have since retreated and disavowed Morey's comments — in precisely the same way South Park satirized.

TBH I thought they would have already been banned in China for something. The fact that they weren't and are now because of specifically targeting China is amazing.

In the episode (one of em) they even started to mention the whole "harvesting prisoners for organs" thing but quickly (comedically) stopped.

They wen't aired but it was easy enough to find South Park online. The Chinese government now went through and block all mention of South Park any where on the Chinese internet. Like you can't type in "South Park" on a web search/store/whatever and get anything back.

Yeah, they somehow scrubbed any mention of South Park from the Chinese internet(intranet?) The South Park hashtag doesn't work, forum discussions are locked and behind a "The topic of this discussion has been concluded to be detrimental to public health." lockscreen.

Also, Blizzard just had The a round of Grand Tournaments for their World of Warcraft digital card game. The winner is from HK and proclaimed support for the protests. The footage for the match has been scrubbed from the servers, the winner had his cash prize taken away and banned for a year and the casters that were interviewing him were both fired.

It can be run by the Taiwan and still kowtow to Beijing's wishes. The "conservative" party has a pro reunification agenda and big business here tends to agree with them as most business has to involve China in someway. It could have been a mandate that started with China calling Blizzard or it could have been Blizzard acting preemptively to show they're towing the line.

The Hong Kong situation is one that most people in the streets here are vocally in support of, but when it turns to the government less so. Recently there was an issue where a Hong Kong exchange student was assaulted by a Chinese exchange student at a Taiwanese University because the HK student wrote "HK now, TW next" on his door. In response the Chinese student choked him the later threw water on it. Chinese student hasn't been expelled last time I checked.

I'd say most people over the age of 35~ would be called bootlickers. They just don't want thing to change, they don't really care if China comes over as long as the can maintain their lifestyle.
